Why Ucla Football Is Screwed

PrintUcla Football lives in the shadow of Ucla Basketball. One picture tells the story.
That, my fellow Trojans is Ucla's practice field. Spaulding field is only 80 yards long, hence there are no 40 yard lines. The sheds on the north sideline are the football "storage buildings." Behind the storage buildings lies Pauley Pavillion, with the Ucla script on its roof. The Morgan Center football offices are to the right, behind Pauley.
Ucla is a basketball school and they can't get away from it. Pauley Pavillion dominates everything. Nearly forty years have passed since the end of the Wooden era, but the Bruins are still lost in the middle of it.
Four years ago, Ucla had a final, golden opportunity to make an investment in football, but again, basketball memories took precedence. There was talk of building a new basketball arena along the edge of campus and maybe even tearing down old Pauley to make room for a real practice field and a state of the art football facility. In the end it was shot down, because it was so important for Ucla to preserve the "Cathedral of College Hoops." Pauley Pavillion is now in the middle of an extensive reconstruction and football continues to sit in its shadow. With Morgan Center demonstrating its full 80% commitment to football, Is it any wonder their hapless players are so prone to jumping the fence?
Any coach, recruit, student or fan that sees Ucla's football facilities understands they don't hold a candle to the power, influence, and ubiquitous presence of John Robert Wooden's memory. He rests in peace; unfortunately (for Bruins) so does Ucla football.

Yes you are so right----ucla is living in the past heck they haven't even progress on the academic side of things in the last 10 years.
Yes we can't play in a Bowl and that is lucky for the rest of College FB' but next year we at USC will dominate.

Except wrt those new facilities the question is where do you put them? At this point the only feasible location would be the track and field stadium which would have to be torn down. Good luck with that.

Yah they have exhausted their land resources by building new medical and research stuff not even leaving enough parking for their commuter students.
That’s the great thing about private schools they typically don’t expand beyond their means, unlike the uc system (state gov) always bite off more than they can chew. I mean ucla isn’t the only calif state school that has old facility’s it is the way it goes if you don’t stay on top of it you fall behind. I remember when at Cerritos college they never built a women’s gym and always saved their money, well then prop 9 kicked in and they had to give up their extra development money to other schools and the general fund. They still don’t have a women’s gym, but other schools have because they used there money before prop 9 and have them.

They will never have an on campus stadium
Nothing to do with room on campus. Everything to do with traffic control in West LA.
They have a nice big field right in front of Pauley and next to Drake.
They could cut that in half and still have a nice practice field. But you are dealing with a school that is not particularly interested in football. That’s obviously fine in terms of how they set their priorities, but just like Rick said, you can’t have expectations that exceed your level of commitment. That junior practice field in the shadow of Pauley is an accurate metaphor for their program.

They’re demonstrating how the state funding crisis should be managed. Cal is a mature institution that understands its mission. Ucla is petulant, self-entitled, cursed by an inferiority complex and above all envious. They can’t get the football program they want, therefore they academic program must be burned down. W. T. F.

How can the middle line on the football field be labelled “50” when the field is only 80 yards wide???
The 50 isn’t the 50, it’s really the 40.
They’re just too lame to label it correctly and instead choose to do their own phantom math and label it “50” because it SHOULD be the “50” but isn’t.
It’s sort of like a “zero” on the scoreboard.
It SHOULD be a “21” or “13” or at least a “3” but isn’t. So, should the scoreboard be changed to “3” because it SHOULD be?
How about calling oneself a Champion when you lose 0-50 and have a 6-6 record?
Yes… University of Champions Los Angeles…
What the heck kind of math are they teaching those UCLA students?

duh...its called a scholarship
When you go to UCLA, the cost of the admission is lower and you don’t need as much $$$ to cover normal units.
That’s my whole point about how California taxpayers are funding their ineptness.
Trying to convince someone that USC did not cheat only works with people that want to know the truth
If they aren’t interested in knowing the truth, then don’t waste your time or energy trying to persuade them of anything. Most of those guys are just trolling to try to provoke a reaction.
