USC going independent?
Is Lisa Horne reputable? I'm not familiar with her work, so this may be way, way off base, which is why I come here.
A reliable source just told me USC AD Pat Haden is considering pulling USC out of Pac-10,going independent b/c SC doesn't want to share $$
Could easily just be Haden floating rumors to get a bigger slice of the pie - like Texas - but with BYU leaving the Mountain West and Texas teetering, seems more viable. Plus you folks did just sign the series with Texas, and already play ND, so adding in BYU and we've got ourselves a nice little independent conference.

USC already gets a bigger slice of the pie, have for years.
What Haden wants to do is keep it. I have a feeling it’s posturing, using leverage to keep what USC earns (it’s not just USC, it’s UCLA too). Well as much of it as they can since they currently generate more than they take. Of course a threat is no good unless you are wiling to follow it through. Yes USC just signed a series with Texas for 2017/2018. There is a thread about this topic on the front page.
This is all about leverage...
The Big 12 situation is going to implode…they will not last five years. Haden knows that and is making sure that SC is still at the fore front…
I am just a new boy...A stranger in this town
Where are all the good times...Who's gonna show this stranger around?
"Mention USC to a Bruin and they get angry; mention UCLA to a Trojan and they laugh."
Why would it be dumb?
A little explanation would be appreciated.

Los Angeles is like Manchester. There is a red team that wins championships and a blue team that doesn't.
Plus then we could drop your stinking bRuins.
So Fight On USC followers and Don’t worry WE Will Still Play on Saturdays and Bowls will come later, for WE ARE SC not That other Softball University. Oh and don’t say you now have a baseball team, it’s not Real Baseball unless you use Wooden Bats

Going independent is crazy talk
As long as the Rose Bowl is tied to the Pac-10, there is no reason for USC to go independent. USC has at least a 1 in 4 chance of making the Rose Bowl every year (barring NCAA sanctions), because USC only faces real competition from 2-3 other Pac-10 teams any given year. Winning the Pac-10 is a better bet than ranking so high that USC gets an at-large spot.
Plus, going independent would raise travel costs, since it probably costs more to travel to teams in Texas, Florida, Ohio, etc. than it does to travel in-state or to Arizona or Oregon. And if the plan would be to play a slate of old Pac-10 conference teams every year anyway to avoid high travel costs, what’s the point of leaving?
We want to build a university our football team can be proud of. -- Dr. George Lynn Cross
The Rose bowl ties to the Pac10 are weakening every new contract
If college football ever moves to a playoff, the bowls die (even the RB). USC would get a ND BCS deal, that is without a question. Just like ND, winning 10 games is a guarantee of a BCS spot, 9 iffy. The Pac10 has actually hurt USC’s chances with their 9 game conference schedule and poor OOC performance. Travel cost for football are not a big issue, it’s not that many games and USC already travels great distances. WSU anyone? The reason to leave is USC would make about ten million each year as an independent over true revenue sharing in the Pac10. That is a lot of cash. The reverse is about 6 million less, money that would come out of non-revenue sports. That too is a lot of cash.
