Bar Brawl Update

Derek Dooley is fittng in nicely in the SEC...

Tennessee coach Derek Dooley has reinstated two Volunteers players he suspended following a July bar brawl that left an off-duty police officer seriously injured.

Sophomore linebacker Greg King and sophomore defensive tackle Marlon Walls will join their teammates when they begin fall practice on Wednesday. The pair has been suspended since the July 9 brawl, though their rolls in the incident have never been made clear by police.

Dooley said Tuesday he's comfortable with the punishment Walls and King have served and said the pair have had a good attitude and shown remorse about the incident, which also led to defensive back Darren Myles' dismissal.

Lemme guess...the punishmnet was internal, right? Interesting to note that he reinstated them right before camp begins. They'll return to playing football before the cop that was kicked in the head while unconscious will return to his job.

Dooley is playing the SEC playbook step by step....Was his dad that way at Georgia?

Dooley won't grant Bryce Brown or Nick Lemaison a release from there scholarships. Then he lies about a face to face meeting with Brown while asking Arthur Brown not to divulge the meeting.

So much for that high level of integrity and character that Dooley wants to instill at UT...You know, the winds if change that he is supposedly instilling after Lane Kiffin's tenure in Knoxville.

In the end I really couldn't care less except for the screaming hypocrisy that we have seen from some Vols fans about just how bad Kiffin was at UT. Yet it would appear that Dooley is no better...If we are to believe that Kiffin is so bad then how do they explain Dooley lying to the Browns? I guess its just par for the course in the SEC.

Carry on...

A Perfect Marriage for the Vols

Kiff was more of a PacX kind of guy. In Dooley, the Vols got exactly what they want. The prototype southern fried slime ball HC. Dooley complements Knoxville like flies on sh*t.

This stuff is just scary weird

Do we live in an alternate universe where good = bad, bad = good?

I cannot, for the life of me, understand or believe the audacity of fellow college football fans. Know this, I understand wanting to believe and trust in your coach or football program- but to continue on this hatred for a school like ours (USC) for no other reason than JUST HATING, is below any standard or sensibility for decency.

I get it, UT and Vols fans feel jilted. Lied to. Taken for a ride.

What’s going on now with their new coach? How do you justify this stuff?

Seriously, what’s going on with North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, and Florida this off season is worse than anything that’s gone on with USC in the last couple of years. Big-whoop! Reggie Bush. One player, one family- didn’t cooperate with NCAA (guess what bozos? THEY DIDN’T HAVE TO!) That’s not to justify the Bush’s/Griffins- I wish to hell they’d have cooperated. Our sanctions might very well have been lessened, but the way the COI was packed against us. . . . . . .I could be quite wrong about that point.

Para, I’m gonna send you an email today. Something on the college football landscape and HATE.

I'm a country music fan- BIG TIME

But as a child- I always wanted to be the Indian? Go figure?

Ever hear Dwight Yoakam’s “Twenty Years” song?

Here’s the lyrics if you wanna sing along: (the bold is the part that’s relevant to your comment ev. i know! i’m verbose, and a little weird. sue me. . . . wait! no, don’t. leave that to them TN-folks. they’re good at litt-uh-gate-in’ !)

Hey look yonder, Henry, comes the sheriff
And he’s carrying a warrant in his hand
Don’t you run, poor old Henry, for he’ll shoot you
Not long will you be a free man

Chorus:
Now twenty years you must spend behind steel bars
For a crime that you did not do
Yeah the lie she swore in that district court
Has proved to be the ruin of you

Tried to warn you, Henry, not to cross her
Tried to tell you about her vengeful ways
When you turned and left her for another
She swore, Henry, that she’d make you pay

Chorus:
Now twenty years you must spend behind steel bars
For a crime that you did not do
Yeah the lie she swore in that district court
Has proved to be the ruin of you

Listen well, all you young rounders
Heed the lesson poor old Henry never learned
That even hell with all its fiery power
Hath no fury like a woman’s scorn

Chorus:
Now twenty years you must spend behind steel bars
For a crime that you did not do
Yeah the lie she swore in that district court
Has proved to be the ruin of you

Yeah the lie she swore in that district court
Has proved to be the ruin of you

Chris Dufresne writes in today's LATimes

“Volunteers fans can always blame these likely losses on Lane Kiffin: Oregon, Florida, at Louisiana State, at Georgia, Alabama, at South Carolina … sheesh.”

One of those, “Wish I said that” moments when I read this.

"Fun fact: My grandma actually had 7 carries for 79 yards and one TD last year against Stanford. The (Oregon Ducks) spread option just works like that, but it helped that she’s pretty scrappy" (JShufelt- Addicted to Quack)

A couple of things...

I’m not sure if this is so much an update on the aftermath of the brawl as much as it s a list of issues you have with Tennessee.

I think all of us are feeling pretty uneasy with how this whole debacle is finding a resolution. But ultimately there haven’t been enough facts made public to allow anybody outside of the situation to form an educated opinion on how this should be handled. If you say anyone being accused should be kicked off the team, you’re opening up a whole different box of hypocricy.

As far as the Bryce Brown issue goes,

If we are to believe that Kiffin is so bad then how do they explain Dooley lying to the Browns?

First, I’m not sure how our opinion of Kiffin and our opinion of how Dooley has handled the Bryce Brown situation have anything to do with each other. Secondly, when has there been any report of Dooley lying to the Browns? Misleading the media about the issue? Yes. Lying to the Browns? If I’m missing something please let me know.

Look, I get it, Tennessee fans have ripped on your new coach more than anyone since he’s been hired. But in all fairness, we do have good reason to angry with the guy. Not ‘threaten your family’ angry, thats inexcusable and I don’t try to defend those acts commited by a few lunatics. But the fact remains the way he left, without warning, two weeks before national signing day put our program in much worst shape than he found it. Thats the issue most of us have. He put the spot light on us for a lot of the wrong reasons while he was there, shaped a certain perception of Tennessee, then up and split leaving us to deal with our new found reputation.

I’ve seen it discussed on this blog that Tennessee isn’t a destination job. Maybe thats your opinion, however the two coaches that preceded Lane as head coach at Tennessee held the position for 17 & 16 years respectivly. So in mine and probably most of your lifetimes the fact remains that for those that held the position, it has been a destination job. And the fanbase rightfully expected the person we hired to take it seriously and do it right.

I don’t hate Lane Kiffin, I have a lot of problems with how he handled the Tennessee football program. Thats it.

Lastly, BixBeiderbecke, when you talk about hate, are you referring to things like this?

In Dooley, the Vols got exactly what they want. The prototype southern fried slime ball HC. Dooley complements Knoxville like flies on sh*t.

Take care everybody

Welcome...

I think it is pretty simple really…

Your coach, like ours, has flaws. You will support your coach despite those flaws…see Will’s post yesterday.

We understand the UT fan bases complaints of Kiffin…but Dooley is far from the white knight some have thought he would be. His claims of character and integrity have come under fire for his alleged lying. I don’t know what the truth is but in trying to paint Kiffin as the devil and Dooley a saint someone missed the memo that these guys are human first and coaches second…they do what is best for the team even when it isn’t popular with outsiders…and we are all outsiders.

Glass houses and bricks don’t go well together.

Anyway…just my .2 cents

Misleading = okay, lying = not okay?

That tells it all right there. And then basically saying “it’s okay to only nominally hate”.

Ok, maybe we were brought up with an entirely different set of sense and sensibility. That’s cool.

But hate, as it applies to BixBeiderbecke- is not appropriate. I never said those words. Besides, (and I’m only guessing here) if couches weren’t burned, death-threats made, and anger have been subsided- the person attributed to those words would not have expressed them. (cause, and effect my boy! look it up, it might shine some light on your angst)

As far as Bix is concerned: hate, under all circumstances is to be avoided. It’ll take you to an early grave. That, or . . . . . .make you eat a ton of pancakes and drink a lot of beer! Bix just isn’t into it.

Bix cares. Be well GetOff. Either that or, stop getting off (in general) and instead- get on with love. And forgiveness. It can do a body good, I’ll tell you.

I don't think my post was in angst...

Just trying to offer a different perspective, and yes misleading the media is a lot different than lying to a player and his family. Coaches mislead the media all the time, its not uncommon. Lying to the Browns I would consider more offensive but theres no report of that happening to my knowledge.

I also didn’t mean to attribute the above quote to you, just meant to point out that you seemed quite concerned about hate existing across the nation when there was an example just a few lines up in this very thread ;).

Fair enough

Cause and effect. I can’t speak for others on this blog- but you won’t find me going over to other rival fan sites/blogs spouting off pointing out unfair or hypocritical commentary. Like I said before, if Tennessee Vol fans could temper their enthusiasm about being so upset about Lane Kiffin- you wouldn’t necessarily hear vociferous and angry responses from any one of us here at CC. Lane Kiffin is our coach now. For better or for worse.

Go on ahead, and be mad about Lane Kiffin’s departure from Rocky Top. That’s all well and good. Paragon gave you no reason to pause- he didn’t provide those words. If you want to defend your argument by attributing the quoted words in your initial comment AND apply them to me somehow- you have done so in error. I realize you clarified your comment from above- but still- I don’t see how a commenter here on CC has anything to do with me. We’re all individuals here- I don’t know who the person is you are quoting from, nor do I subscribe to his opinion.

I can only speak from my heart. Hate is wrong, regardless of the situation. Again, this is a blog and other commenters are entitled to their own opinion. Bix cannot shed the world of hate, as a matter of fact- I know of quite a few people at my own church who have a black-heart on certain topics, for certain people, and for certain places.

Lane Kiffin is a lightning rod, this is for sure. But, like I said- he is our coach now and I’ll defend him as best as I can. He is not the devil incarnate, nor is he the root of all the travails that exist at Rocky Top. And that, my friend, is all I’m trying to convey.

For what it’s worth, I don’t condone the words you quoted. Although, I understand them entirely. The SEC is full of scumbags, like every other conference. Tough football is played within the SEC- I’ll not begrudge anyone of that opinion. But, saints are few and far in between within the SEC. The SEC is an easy conference to deride, especially because of all the hate-filled fans that are consumed by the SEC’s dominance in football.

I hear ya...

And to be more clear I just meant that last part as a friendly nudge at you, hence the ;)

I think we can all agree it’d be better if everybody would settle down no matter what side of the fence you’re on.

I'm glad you stopped on by Getoffmyvols

Truly, we here at CC are decent folk. Just like anyone else in this awesome country of ours- we get a little defensive and high-minded whenever our turf is trampled on. The beauty of college football is: there’s always next year- and the year after that. No more Colt McCoy? Fine, there’s always gonna be Matt Barkley. No more Toby Gerhart? Fine- MARK INGRAM FOR HEISMAN ONCE MORE!!!! (no, just kidding. or am I?)

I’ve watched Coach Dooley work his magic this off-season. As a matter of fact, I think he’s a fine coach thus far. But, like it is with a number of schools this past off-season- college football team have been hammered in the press lately. With the Bar Brawl in Knoxville, and Coach Dooleys dubious behavior as it pertains to the disciplining of Vol players- he seems to have taken a step back, for the sake of putting bodies on the practice squad. That’s my 2-cents, and it’s not filled with hate or schadenfreude- it’s just my perception of the situation.

And then we have Stanley Havili and TJ Bryant getting in a scuffle. And, because this is college football, be sure to stay tuned for the drama that might possibly unfold in watching Coach Kiffin do some of his own disciplining.

Good give and take, Getoffmyvols! Come back again, we welcome your perspective so long as we keep invectives in checktive. Ok-tive? ;- ) Have a good one, my man!

Hate is a bit strong; how about despise?

Getoff, it’s a shoot first, ask questions later mentality with the Vols after the months of invective spewing from the entire state of Tenn re: not only Kiff, but USC in general.

The sad thing is that I had become a Vols fan during Kiff’s tenure.

Anyway, surely you understand. I think you will find that we can put our guns away and play nice if you happen to be that anomalous, respectful SEC visitor to this blog.
