Some thoughts on Malik Jackson's Departure...

It is hard to figure out just what Maik is thinking in his decision to transfer to USC. But if you look a little closer it probably makes some sense in his eyes...

There is no question that Jackson has some talent, he played in all 13 games last season and had 3.5 sacks so there was some production there but Jackson was never going to start, not with Nick Perry and Armond Armstead around.

UT has some NFL caliber players on their D-line now but little depth. Jackson won't start this season but probably will next season. Playing in a bowl game no matter the profile is obviously important to him as well. Like I said I have no problem with it if that is the motivation...

But is there more to it?

Is there some resentment that his brother could not qualify academically at USC?

Did he have issues with the current coaching staff?

Hard to know for sure but there have been some rumors...

Jackson has a bit of a reputation on the team as being a little nutty...someone called him Milton Bradley in pads on one of the other sites. Those who have attended practice regularly have also stated that if Pete Carroll was yelling at a player in practice it was probably the recently drafted Everson Griffin or Jackson. Jackson had his fair share of boneheaded penalties the past couple of years so his discipline on the field comes into question.

All players make some bonehead plays but Jackson's number came up more than others.

In Jackson's exit interview with USCFootball.com he seemed evasive and he used the term "it is what it is" a couple of times and also said "he just went with it" in the piece. That didn't give me a whole lot of conviction in his reasons for leaving. It has also been rumored that Jackson, like Jordan Campbell, was actively recruiting other USC players to leave with him. If true I take exception with that. I am more than willing to wish a kid well if USC does not work out but that goes out the window if the kid is actively recruiting against the school as he is walking out the door.

That to me shows a kids level of immaturity and a window into his soul.

There will be some that will be disappointed that Jackson is leaving the team during it's darkest hour. I can understand that, as many within the Trojan family are coming together. We have seen the 2010 recruiting class pretty much stick together (Stanley and Henderson being the exceptions). And the only defections out of the juniors and seniors that can transfer penalty free were two players that were not going to start, and one of those was rumored to not even being on the team officially. Both apparently had some "issues" during their time with the program...

I doubt this will be the last transfers we see out of all this. Depending on who bolts the program it could be a blessing. The key now is getting early enrollees into the program before the recruiting limits kick in. So far Lane Kiffin has been doing a pretty good job, especially pulling a 4-star linebacker out of Florida yesterday.

This was not unexpected, there were bound to be some defections and there are still some rough seas ahead, we just have to roll with it and hope for the best...

UPDATE: Here is Jackson's interview on a Tennessee radio station earlier today...

There are some interesting quotes here...like Mustain is going to transfer??

You be the judge...

Nice point, yes if he is working to take others that is not a good sign and he will find out the grass isn't greener on the other side.

Run Run Run away but the problem will still exist until you face and admit it is you, unless you are related to Festor. I feel unless you really didn’t care about the school you went to other than perks (I guess bowl games) you were fooling yourself. Obviously he didn’t come to college other than playing FB and maybe making Pros, that’s why they should quit using college FB as the minor leagues for the dumb ones. One less headache to BABY Shit, and the ones who go go also aren’t MEN—Just BNers.

So Fight On USC followers and Don’t worry WE Will Still Play on Saturdays and Bowls will come later, for WE ARE SC not That other Softball University. Oh and don’t say you now have a baseball team, it’s not Real Baseball unless you use Wooden Bats.

I loved the way

he crushed Jimmy Clausen. I’ll miss Malik. Hope he does well.

Yes but I hated the way he would pick up PF

Jackson was always a mixed bag with me. Sorry he is leaving and wish him well, but not disappointed. Good luck Malik.

I'll trade Jackson's for Turene's all day long

At least Turene still has the potential to start. Malik was a “pretty good” player who was never going to start or be an All-American. He also did have some maturity issues and character questions. He is not dissimilar from his equally talented brother who couldn’t make it at a BCS school.

Opens up a valuable scholie. We have bigger needs. Wes Horton and Kevin Greene are probably thrilled. Good luck in the backwoods, Malik!

Patrick Turner said he couldn't get out of TN fast enough

And he wasn’t talking about UT which I’m sure is a fine school.

Agreed. In a huge way

See if you can spot the bullshit difference:
’You’re either in or you’re not’
‘It is what it is’
‘You either are or you are’

1. is the fraud people use to give off an air that they are asserting an unassailable stance. As if framing a situation in between two absolutes like this gives a point more weight. Btw, it was made popular earlier this decade by that prince of Aristotelian logic, George W. Bush. Applying this mechanism to recruiting is the most ridiculous of farces.

2. is the device used to make people feel like they’re making a statement of some substance by saying absolutely nothing at all. Made famous in the past few years by professional athletes bored with the standard cliches they had been forced into by repetitive and equally boring media inquiries. Or, in this case, to give the air of obliging, when all he really means is fuck off, I have nothing to say, or both.

3. is some shite I just made up. Could be the next famous anti-disambiguation to make rounds if it were proffered and marketed by someone cooler than I. Maybe I’ll write Afroman and see if he’d be interested in building it into his next jingle. Or really stretch it and see if I can use it to compare commitment of high school recruiting to the commitment of marriage.

Since joining the Big Ten, Penn State has a record of 103-2 in games where they score 30 points or more. Of course, which college football team doesn't have a similar record.

This isn't the worst thing in the word

But at the same time, I don’t see how this really helps us. Jackson may have had some problems, but they weren’t enough to make him a detriment to the team. We’re getting pretty thin on the defensive line, and the way it’s looking, Devon Kennard may be back at DE before you know it.

Good luck Malik, now go away and fuck off!

(i’m not into punks! it is, what it is)

These defections and/or transfers (whatever the fuck people wanna call ‘em) are making me sick. It’s bad enough that we’ve been banned from bowl games for 2 years, and being limited to 15 scholarship players for the next couple of years is FUCKING UNHEARD OF IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYERS- and I’m SOLELY thinking about that #15 – as it applies to the number of scholarship players that count against the number of scholarship players WE HAD ON OUR TEAM the day before the sanctions were handed down.

So I ask- WHAT ABOUT THOSE THAT HAVE NOW DEFECTED OR HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO DEFECT FROM HERE ON OUT? If you are reading it like I have been- the NCAA has practically killed any number of OTHER SCHOLARSHIP PLAYERS ON OUR TEAM by they’re allowing them to go without penalty.

THAT IS JUST ROYALLY FUCKED!

Our numbers are dwindling and they cannot get any higher than +15 for the next couple of years.

These cats at the NCAA need a serious ass-kicking. Seriously.

Are Malik’s actions disappointing? Absolutely YES! However, without Paul Dee’s shenanigans this is a non issue. Let’s keep our focus on the REAL CULPRITS.

Campbell and Jackson are two guys who might have left anyways anyways regardless of the sanctions.

Immaturity? Take a look at your D-line coach!

“I am more than willing to wish a kid well if USC does not work out but that goes out the window if the kid is actively recruiting against the school as he is walking out the door.

That to me shows a kids level of immaturity and a window into his soul."

What did you expect, with a “role model” like Ed Ogre coaching the D-line? Ogre contacted almost every 2010 Tennessee recruit on his way out the door in Knoxville (some by conference call on a speakerphone!) to try to get them to not show up to class on the first day of the semester at Tennessee in January, so that they could enroll at USC with no strings attached. And Laney Kiffin claims he knew nuthin’ ‘bout nuthin’ when asked.

Payback’s a bitch, ain’t it?
