An interesting take by Dennis Dodd
This is off the wall to me.
Dodd is known SC hater (don't let his "journalistic Impartiality" fool you) so I am not really sure how to take this piece...
USC football is going to walk. There will be no NCAA jail. What, you haven't heard? Lane Kiffin told me. Actually, he told all of us the day he took the job in January. USC's coach is a lot of things and stupid isn't one of them. He didn't replace Pete Carroll knowing that his program was going to get The Big Haircut from the NCAA.
Now, that is just the opening paragraph.
Dodd goes onto outline why he thinks that way.
I think its a bit much...
This is wishful thinking to many out there in support of USC, but we really have no way of knowing just what the NCAA is going to rule. Neither does Dodd.
I am not sure if Dodd's tone is more that he actually believes it of if he simply resigning himself to it.
Either way I thought it was interesting.

Dodd is a prick.
I hate him more than I hate any other sports ‘journalist,’ and I hate him on a personal level.
MAGNIFICENT GRAND CHAMPION CC NCAA BRACKET 2010
It was interesting and I am one of those that hate Dodd.
He really doesn’t say much other than his opinion, and honestly it’s a fair take. He is wrong on the fact the BCS can take USC’s 2004 MNC, but it’s a mistake many in the media have also made. He did have one really good line: “I’m expecting your USC-as-cheaters e-mails but they will be misdirected. Imagine your annual physical (”Turn your head and cough") lasting four years. After that long, the NCAA better have something. It won’t. Not enough to hurt Trojan football."
Really you got to wonder he might be right about kiff taking job, but he is wierd.
Well basically John Wooden was and is a FRAUD, by the way where is Sammy Gilbert Ben needs some ballers.

The trouble with Dodd's "matter-of-fact"-ness is . . .
. . . .that those who are either from out of state (Southern Cal fans- they like to call us), or from the Trojan Haters club will cue this Dodd piece-up and shove it back in OUR faces as if Dodd represents the way most USC fans feel. To some extent, there are those of us who feel the way Dodd feels on this matter before the NCAA Committee on Infractions.
But although I believe we’ll be punished- with a hard hand, I don’t think it will be an unjust determination. If anything, I don’t think the NCAA give a rat’s ass about Joe Fan and his retarded opinions. The NCAA cares about what happened in Florida this last time around with Bowden and his players. More specifically, the STATE COURTS in Florida and the manner in which they were able to pierce and dent part of the NCAA-armor and shield. So yeah, it is incumbent on the NCAA C.O.I. to be sure to craft a fair and equitable judgment on the individual allegations against the USC football and basketball programs, and . . . . .well- the shit could really hit the fan on the Lack of Institutional Control determination. I happen to think we will be guilty (re: Mike Garrett will be reprimanded to some degree) of lack of oversight, but I think the punishment will be very mild. Sounds weird, even to me- I know. But although the punishment is expected to be mild there- probation on this matter might be precedent setting.
Thanks to the Florida and Alabama cases this past year, the NCAA is quite leery of the appeals process at any state level and the litigation process at a federal level- at this point and time. Thank you Bobby, and Dr. Mal Moore! Y’all are peachy!

I feel what makes this case so very different from your above mentioned Florida State and the Alabama scenarios, is that in both cases the NCAA was able to obtain critical evidence and witness corroboration sufficient to establish without question the degree of offense and culpability of the parties involved, and given that, were able to hand down the penalties, though I might add as a side note, Florida State felt otherwise.
This case differs in as much as this whole brouhaha was instigated by Yahoo’s own Woodward and Bernstein. I feel the NCAA dove right in based on the allegations proffered, (they being sensationalist just as the media) though, unable to find much initially they no doubt felt there more to the issue than they knew therefore continuing their investigation.
Like most things in life, time has a way of letting all things come to light, however in this situation time was not on the NCAA’s side, the on going litigation between Lake-Bush et al continued to drag out and was put on idle by Bush’ counsel until it was finally settled without deposition or statement by either party of the action, so the time lag did not effectually give the NCAA what it had hoped for…evidence! Though it did put the onus squarely on Bush, however, it did not and has not painted the administration with the necessary culpability in the matter.
So the crux is, Bush et al (family) are bad guys, if not, there would not been litigation, but, what about the administration, what did they know, when did they know it and when they became aware of the issue, what did they do? So, what do you penalize the school for, ignorance, ambivalence, lack of institutional control when this is clearly taking place some 150 miles from the University and no doubt in my mind quite covertly.
The issue of penalty is by nature the purpose of the Infractions Committee who will of course have to hand down a penalty in order to save face…they, The Committee, is between a rock and a hard place, if they patty cake USC, there will be rebellion in the College ranks with all type of repercussion …if they send USC to the Guillotine, there ASS will wind up in Litigation…AGAIN! All I can say…Better Them than Me.

Great analysis, you've been rec'd!
It’s gonna be a doozy, the determination of punishment for USC. No one’s gonna like it, that’s for sure.
I think, because of their inability to gather the necessary information that the NCAA needed from any Bush deposition or settlement parameters- the NCAA will be fair in their treatment of the Bush and Mayo allegations. As well, because USC Office of Compliance wasn’t exactly on the ball with regards to Mayo- coupled with the fact that USC “should have known” (in some small degree) regarding Bush (the Ornstein internship? C’mon! that’s just crazy considering what we know now- looseness in the “access” to practices and the fact that Ornstein’s office handles athletes and entertainers exclusively)- I have the sinking feeling that although the Lack of Institutional Control charges against seem flimsy- it doesn’t seem inconceivable to me that the Office of Infractions will hit us with a precedent-setting probationary period. The loss of scholarships, loss of games? It’s not too much of a concern of mine. It’s the Lack of IC that has me worried the most.
