What a f*cking idiot
It’s beyond me how this clown still remains an AD.
Total strategic clusterf*ck by the University. Instead of fighting for a public opinion, they just kept everything behind the scenes and secretive. USC’s point of view never had a chance to win hearts and minds.
Total failure by everyone involved in the process.
Everyone makes mistakes

There’s mistakes, and then there are patterns of bad decision making. We’re long past the transition point from the former to the latter.

Mike Garrett is not qualified to be the Athletic Director. When you make the same errors repeatedly, you are demonstrating that you either do not recognize that you are making errors, you do not wish to correct those errors, or that you don’t know how to correct those errors.
Between the compliance errors at the executive level – by which I mean principally the Mayo debacle, principally – and the hiring track record, Garrett has demonstrated that he is not the man to take USC forward. As a legend of USC football, he deserves respect, which can be demonstrated by allowing him to retire rather than meeting him at the office door with a couple of boxes and security.

But he is Mike F-ing Garrett Super Hero everyone bend-over the emperor has come into the building.
Mike Garrett is a twit that thinks he knows all sports and can coach better than the ones he hires, totally delusional.

I must agree with you Paragon....
He comes across like a pompous, self-centered, unrelenting moron. For him to react the way he did after what I read in those 67 pages is quite concerning. It also makes me 0% surprised on the severity of the sanctions. If you were an NCAA investigator and you had all that evidence in front of you from the report and you had M.G. taking 0 responsibiilty and pretty much downplaying every aspect of situation besides USC’s reputation, well lets just say i don’t see why it took as many weeks as it did following Bush’s most recent settlement.

This could backfire on the Haters for now maybe a lot of Recruits will what to be a part of the group that poops on the ncaa and their so-called running of college sports. I feel this is the time that the Athlete’s strikes back at the ncaa who steals money night and day.

I respectfully disagree with your analysis of the effect of Kiffen's comments in the future. I dont see this panning out to be a Athletes vs. NCAA mentality. Nice spin though.

Also
just want to point out that if you pay players, you’re forced to pay all players, which makes college football completely impossible to support expect at maybe 8 or 9 schools, which eliminates college football all together. You then get a D League set up, but no one watches it because it’s not tied to the pride of graduates and residents, doesn’t command any TV revenue, and then has to be subsidized by the NFL, who cashes in from not having to compete with anyone for football.
The idea that the NCAA—which is still a stupid and flailing organization, I’ll admit—is somehow “stealing” from players isn’t supported by the number. It’s the very facade the NCAA creates with the public, that these players are fully student-athletes, that allows for the idea of college athletics. They money college sports brings in supports the best coaches, the best facilities and insane exposure that more that allows them to make up for playing for “free” once they enter the draft and get paid by the NFL.
And just so everyone is clear: no one is stopping high school seniors from bailing on college and getting paid to play in Canada. There’s a reason they don’t, though.
I know about your diabolical plan.

And I respectfully disagre with your take...
Kiffins comments were actually humble as well as supportive of USC.
NO COACH would walk away with his tail between his legs. Kiffin will use this as a tool to keep the players focused and motivated…

I agree
The difference between MG and any old athletic director around the nation is that he is MIKE GARRETT. He is a Trojan and a legend. Was it wise to make those statements — no. Do I feel exactly the same way? Heck Yeah! MG was talking to a group of boosters who were, I’m just guessing here, a little down. At the University they talk alot about the Trojan family, well now its put up or shut up time. This is not a time for reason or diplomacy, not groveling was not the reason for that sham decision, it was pure unadulterated hate. Hate for our success on the field, hate for the way we did it, with style and grace instead of cold soulless precision. In this time of uncertainly surrounding the program that we all love we need solidarity not sniping. Don’t give those who want to destroy us the satisfaction of dividing us. The NCAA investigation and report did not happen as a result of mismanaging PR or mistakes by the AD’s office, it happened because many people in the media and at the NCAA have a visceral hatred for USC. I have been through the NCAA’s decision and USC’s response to charges presented at the Tempe conference. It is clear that USC approached the allegations in a discrete, honest and forthright manner. It is equally clear that the NCAA disregarded all attempts by USC to address the matter and took as gospel allegations made by a convicted felon — almost to the letter. The NCAA decided to screw USC from the get to pour le encouragement les outres. Mike Garrett could have caught Osama Bin laden, stopped the Oil Spill, cured AIDS and brought peace to the middle east and the result would have been identical. The can take our crappy crystal football (which frankly looks like something you might get free with a subscription to Sports Illustrated anyway) but lets not let them destroy what it means to be a Trojan. MG may be a dolt, but by god he’s a Trojan and that makes him better than 99% of the rest.
FIGHT ON!

Being an alumnus of USC doesn’t preclude or excuse me from speaking as I find. Garrett’s in over his head. The bias of the NCAA doesn’t change that. Who handed them the ammunition in the first place?
"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"
Nor should it
everyone is entitled to their own way of grieving after Thursdays nonsense. I suppose mine is somewhat similar to Garrett’s, in that I blame it all on the NCAA and those who hate USC. If Garrett were let go I wouldn’t protest, however it also wouldn’t change the tough road ahead for USC football. If I were in charge of the deal I would wait a few months and announce his retirement. That way you don’t have a UCLA — Dorrell situation where they eat their own. Whatever his shortcomings Garrett deserves a quiet exit and a handshake, its the USC way. I will say this. If you went to the athletic department of any school in the nation I bet you could string together enough ticky tack nonsense to make up a charge sheet. I do not believe that USC had knowledge of Bush’s situation, and aside from a football offensive position coach that matter is not in issue. I find it somewhat distressing that a University, its Fans, its Players past and present should suffer as a result of one players questionable, and private, choices. If a student cheats on a test, do you fail the whole class? I have run into Mike Garrett a couple times at games and around campus on game day, and in my interactions with him he has seemed to be a nice guy. He has spent much of his working life doing his best (which I will grant may not be good enough) to make USC a better place. All I meant by my comments is that as a Trojan, and a member of the “Trojan Family” I believable we owe him some consideration, and a little dignity in this whole tawdry mess.
USC today is a much more modern place today than it was even when I went there in the late 1990’s. Gone are the days when parents had a realistic dream of their kids following them to their alma mater. Gone as well is the lifelong consideration given to Trojan applicants to graduate and professional programs. Most of what it means to be a Trojan only lives in the way we interact as a community, and the heart of that community is USC Football. I hope that no one took my statement as a call for censorship, because it was not intended to be such, rather it was a plea to or community to be better than the UCLA’s and SEC schools of the world and remember that even in the face of this challenge we are still Trojans, and that aught to mean something.

It’s a fair point. I guess because none of my family were alumni and I live in the East, I don’t see the strength of the alumni connections. Heartily agree about handing the whole situation with time and some dignity of course.

its sad because of what he did in the past, but I think someone needs to ask him to step down before they are forced to fire him.

by his arrogance. He was lucky when PC came to SC - Remember he hired Hackett, who he chose… how is baseball these days…. more than half SC’s draw for coaches and athletes is SC not MG. Just meeting him was enough for me to be turned-off. It is him not the success SC that alienates other ADs or the public — it is him.

Embarrassing
Just because he’s won a Heisman at USC doesn’t give him the right to be pompous. As an alumnus I’m embarrassed how he’s handled the NCAA investigation and represented our university. His hear no evil see no evil win at all cost mentality has not only hurt our football team, but more importantly smeared USC’s image. After it’s all said and done, what has Mike Garrett done for USC as AD?
by Ghost of Aeneas on Jun 11, 2010 8:34 PM PDT reply actions
Well, I estimate that he has won 23 natl championships during his tenure
Now, does he deserve any credit for that, or is it all due to the power of USC. He hired PC, but did he luck into the hiring?
I agree that it is well past time for Mike to go. He is a part of the problem, not a part of the solution.
USC like UCLA has always had a tradition of winning NCAA championships due to being located in the largest metropolitan area west of the Mississippi River. I doubt we’ve won numerous volleyball, tennis, and water polo championships due to Mike Garrett’s "expertise" in picking coaches for those sports. The reality is coaching for a USC caliber sports program in one of the most fertile recruiting grounds in America is the pinnacle of a coach’s career. As long as the AD isn’t Joseph Stalin, USC will continue attracting elite coaches.
