Around SBN: Stan Van Gundy Fired As Head Coach Of The Magic

[UPDATED] Coach O on the D Line

Coach_o_-_d_line_medium

These guys could be real scary...Hope the offense can keep up!

UPDATE - Paragon: Here is a little more from the OCR

Perhaps Ed Orgeron was caught up in his own hyperactivity. Maybe it’s a little leftover hyperbole from the Pete Carroll regime.

Whatever the case, the anecdote USC coach Lane Kiffin relayed about Orgeron on Saturday was worth filing away:

“Orgeron came to me halfway (through) practice to say: ‘We’re not going to be a good defensive line, we’re going to be a dominant, great defensive line.’ ”

There’s no question that the line is the strength of the defense. It features experience, talent and playmakers of all shapes and sizes.

Kiffin is especially enamored of the idea of having 6-foot-5, 295-pound Armond Armstead at defensive end.

“We’ve got a 300-pound defensive end, so I’m real excited,” Kiffin said. “When you start studying this conference, this conference has changed. When you look at the stats, where the teams are ranked, there’s been a turn since we were here. I’m glad that we are big.”

Man, these guys are beasts!

Nick Perry and AA on the edges, Tupou and Casey on the tackles… Good lord.

by Julio Nievas on Apr 3, 2010 4:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Cautiously Optimistic

We are just so thin. But, AA always had special talent. PC called this out early with AA. And, Meatball Casey is a stud. Perry needs to be consistent for a full year and better against the run. Tupou needs to be bigger and stronger. Fangupo just needs to stay healthy.

But, we are so thin! Perhaps Ed O is excited about the development of guys like Dajohn Harris or Wes Horton. I hope so. From my perspective, we are one injury away from struggling on the D-line again. But, the talent is there among the prospective starters. AA, Casey, and Perry all have 1st 3 round NFL draft talent.

I'm not so worried as I am with the O-Line.

This is where the “quality over quantity” line bites us in the ass.

Shocker of spring practice thus far?

I like Lane’s comment on 2 sport athletes.

I do too

Pete was cool on the Idea of two sport athletes which was fine but if a kid has talent for both let him chase his dreams…he won’t get another chance.

Ditto!

Toby Gerhart was a 2 sports athlete. Baseball begged PC to recruit him.

With Toby in the lineup, I can see “Coach” Kreuter get few more wins (he still sucks). Speaking of Kreuter, what will get that clown fired???

PS Speaking of baseball, looks like some clowns across the town discovered College Baseball (that list does not include Ryan). And they dare to call others bandwagoners? FYI, I believe fUCLA has never won a game in the CWS. Does this make them “Gap closers” as well?

With Chad Kreuter at the helm

I’m not going to take any potshots at the baseball program across town.

Why not? Just consider Kreuter as USC's Lavin

And sudden discovery of baseball by Ruin fans is just comical.

I wonder if those “equal opportunists” ever acknowledge the fact that Title IX has a lot to do with their rise and our fall.

Interesting, how so?

We are limited in our ability to offer scholarships to baseball players

Most of our players are on 1/4, 1/2, or no scholarship, thanks to Title IX.

11.7 scholarships per baseball team

Makes it very difficult for a private school to compete (but this is not an excuse for pathetic coaching by Kreuter, because he can’t even perform on the level of Miami, Stanford, or Rice). Since it takes more than 11.7 men to field a decent team, some kids end up with a 1/2 scholarship. 1/2 scholarship translates into additional $12-15,000 in tuition costs alone.

At the same time, if you go to fucla, 1/2 scholarship leaves you with only few thousand dollars to cover.

Lets break it down:

Resident tuition – $10,780

vs.

Non Resident University Fees – $11,638
Additional non-residential tuition – $22,021

1/2 scholarship to a CA student leaves him ~5,400 to cover. $5,400 is covered by a scholarship and ~$23,000 by taxpayers

So next time you hear from a ruin clown that their athletic department doesn’t get any subsidies from the state, point out to difference in resident vs. non-resident tuition – state covers nearly $23000 of costs associated with attending fucla.

by anh_sc79 on Apr 4, 2010 5:02 PM PDT up reply actions

FYI, USC tuition is $38,570

so 1/2 scholarship results in ~$19,300 of aid and $19,300 out of pocket expenses.

compare that to $5,400 out of pocket expense for a fucla student-athlete and ~$28500 of aid ($5400 athletic scholarship + $23000 taxpayer subsidy)

Yah in tennis because of T-9 womens teams get 7 1/2 rides and mens only 5 1/2.

Go figure so when USC won NC in tennis last year that was a major accomplishment.

LA Sports is what keep me off the streets and out of trouble, thanks to all the teams Rams, Dodgers, Lakers, USC sports and the Love of Tennis.

Joey, since you write for DT

How about an article in the sports section exposing this clown? Are you allowed to write an “opinionanted article”?

by anh_sc79 on Apr 4, 2010 4:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Wow, I'm even surprised by that...

sU¢LA has never won a CWS game? haha, occasionally even the blind squirrel finds a nut, right?

but, lest I waste an opportunity. Mike Garrett should be fired for the Gillespie/Kreuter decision alone. Ummm, AD Mike, Gillespie is a hall of fame caliber coach, hello? Would you have fired Rod Dedeaux late in his career too?

Please, BoT, Fire Mike Garrett!

This is good news

this year more than ever, as the D line goes, the rest of the defence goes!

by USC_Fire on Apr 4, 2010 9:02 AM PDT reply actions

Yeah, it certainly looks that way. The D-line will anchor the young defense. We’re averaging like 290 pounds on the line. We’re huge!
