An Interesting Interview with Taylor Mays

Wow!

Listen and enjoy...I think.

Sounds like he feels he got sold a bill of goods...

I get the feeling that this won't be the only time we hear some of these type of feelings.

UPDATE:

Here is an interview with the SacBee...

To say that Taylor Mays is motivated is like saying Mike Iupati is kinda big. Asked if he was entering the league with a chip on his shoulder, Mays said the following: "I've probably got the biggest chip on my shoulder out of anybody in the draft."

Some of that chip/resentment/motivation is fueled by his former USC coach and current Seahawks coach, Pete Carroll, who yesterday took a safety in the first round, Texas' Earl Thomas. Asked about that turn of events, there was a pregnant pause. "Um, it was interesting," Mays finally said. "I definitely thought from the relationship we had, the things that he had told me about what I needed to be aware of with the draft process and things that I needed to do, I felt he told me the complete opposite of the actions that he took, which was definitely - it was alarming. ... I understand it's a business. But with it being a business, he needs to be honest. And that's all I was asking for."

Is this a pattern?

I missed this article…someone form one of the boards just sent it to me…

Udeze, who retired from the NFL after a bout with leukemia, joined Washington’s program as an assistant strength and conditioning coach, a position made available to him by Husky Coach Steve Sarkisian.

"Purple is the color of loyalty," Udeze said before the game.

That statement came as a bit of a shock from a player who starred for USC and helped lead the Trojans to the Associated Press national title in 2003.

But Udeze said he contacted Trojans Coach Pete Carroll in July with interest in finding a position in USC’s program.

"He said ‘Give me two weeks,’" Udeze said. "I still haven’t heard from him.

“I called Sark on a Monday. He called me back Wednesday and said come on up."

Udeze wonders if Carroll is still upset about his decision to skip his final year of eligibility and turn pro.

Udeze, a first-round draft pick by the Minnesota Vikings in 2004, was the first high-profile player under Carroll to leave before exhausting his eligibility, a trend that has continued every year since.

Udeze said he was not bitter, but would probably finish his degree at Washington.

When I asked Carroll about Udeze after practice on Monday, he appeared shaken.

“I feel bad that I lost track of the timing in there to get him in school here on time — I just blew it," Carroll said. "I would love to have had an opportunity for him.

"I would love for him to be here, but I just lost track of what I needed to do to get it done."

Interesting…

I think you’re right – especially on the mantra of competition for positions.

Its not about Pete

Taylor went where he went because of his ability. There are a lot of people out there that know a lot more about evaluating NFL talent than I do. Taylor is a freak of nature, but he didn’t exactly have a highlight reel last season. If he left after his junior year, he probably would have gone higher. All that staying does is increase the stock of underrated talent, and expose overrated talent. Taylor was overrated in a lot of NFL scouts minds. Clay Matthews was the opposite of Mays in regards to staying for his senior year.

Taylor needs to stop blaming Pete for his so-called troubles. He’s a millionaire, and probably will have an above average NFL career. Pete helped him get there. He doesn’t owe him a thing.

I think TM's gripe is that he feels PC wasn't straight with him

his ability is his ability

Can’t blame PC for Wright not being eligible that did affect Mays last season. Also with last years defense and its dominance probably masked a number of those deficiencies…

If Taylor would have gone last year, and been top 15

He would have made what, $10m more in contract value? I agree that Taylor and his family made the decision, but with that much money involved, I too would be pissed if my HC were less than honest.

On the flipside, howeve, you hope that it all evens out in that he went to a team that really wants him, where he can be more successful, and if he is really that good, he will eventually make that lost draft money back in a new contract. There are more than one way to slice this onion.

Pete Moved On

Now TM should also. I think he will have a GREAT NFL career. He’ll improve his coverage skills, and continue punishing receives. He is a GREAT hitter. I think he’ll make some coaches regret the oversight.

FIGHT ON Taylor!

SF and Singletary would seem to be a great fit

The Ronnie Lott comparisons are unavoidable. I may pee my pants a little when Taylor first delivers a massive blow to Golden Tate. Although, I do think Golden Tate will be a great player for the Seahawks.
