According to Scott Wolf (our favorite non-CC blogger. . . .ahem!), Coach Lane Kiffin took away the #1 jersey from junior cornerback T.J. Bryant and sophomore receiver De'Von Flournoy yesterday. Obviously, or not- both players seemed a bit ticked-off at the whole episode. And as well, they should. Neither of 'em has played anywhere near the capacity that it takes to command the #1 jersey. They both came in with flair and accolades, but have so far. . . . .fizzled. TJ's done some good things on D, but I haven't heard much out of De'Von- even Paragon has asked "where has he been" a few times here on CC.
So what was it? Was it the fact that it was part of Lane's antics. I'm sure he drummed up enough melodrama for this to be a "shaming" experience for the players. But, was it necessary to do in view of the entire team? They could have been taken aside and told personally and directly that they'd have the ability to reclaim the jersey- if they can out-shine and out-perform one another on the practice field, in the classroom, and especially in the weight room. But, no.
I hope Coach Kiffin's antics don't come up to bite him in the ass. 'Cause that's what did it for him in Oakland. That's why crazy owner Al Davis called him a liar. (for saying things to him in private, than saying completely different things to the players in practice and in meetings). His (Lane's) interpersonal work-skills need a new paradigm. It hasn't worked out all that great for him as a HC the way he deals with bosses and players. He's fine when it comes to his starters and assistants. But it's the players he must reach, be real with, and be a man/gentleman about things with. Yeah, it would be nice to have all that for everyone, but. . . . . .baby steps. That's all I'm asking.
Good luck De'Von. Good luck TJ. You two are gonna need it!
Fight On!
