Gameday Open Thread: USC Trojans vs. California Golden Bears

California Golden Bears at USC Trojans, Feb 4, 2010 7:30 PM PST

USC, which still remains two games out of first place, takes on Cal tonight at Galen Center. Unfortunately, it's not going to be televised so unless you plan on attending, have Trojans all-access, or know of an online link to the game, then you're going to be out of luck. But still, if you're doing the the latter two, feel free to stop by and participate in the thread.

Fight On! Beat the Bears!

Wish I could be at the game

But I have waaaaaaay too much coding to do tonight. I’ll try to follow the box score online though. A win tonight definitely helps keep 1st place attainable – let’s get it!

We got down big in the first half

But are only down 30-27 after 20 minutes thanks to a furious rally in the last couple minutes of the half. It seems like Cal is relying heavily on their stars (Randle and Christopher account for 21 of their 30) while SC has a lot of balance (7 players with points). Hopefully this means some defensive adjustments on Randle and Christopher can keep us in this game and allow us to win. The good news is Vucevic, Stepheson, Washington and Gerrity all have 0 fouls at the half – that could end up being big down the stretch.

Also, if you combine Jerome Randle, Patrick Christopher and Dwight Lewis you’ve got a lot of first names on the court.

We jumped out quick

15 straight points to begin the second before Cal calls timeout and Randle drops in a couple of 3’s (4-7 from beyond the arc) to bring it back to 42-36 SC.

Cal people on CBG were trying to maintain stiff upper lips during SC’s 25 – 0 run. They did admirably well.

Okay, that’s me done pretending to follow basketball for the season.

Randle is killing us

5-9 from deep, not to mention fouled on a 3 point shot and hitting all 3 free throws to tie the game up at 50 with 5:34 to go.

SC up 2

Under 90 seconds to go!

Gerrity hits a 3

and Robertson with a 3 of his own.

2 point game with 42 ticks left.

Up 3 with 4 seconds left

We foul. I assume to make them take the FTs and be down 1 or force them to try to miss the second and get an offensive board. I’m a big fan of this strategy – let’s see if it works.

They make both

And then were forced to foul Vucevic with 3 seconds left. He hit both, Randle misses a 3 at the buzzer, and USC wins. The strategy paid off and a HUGE win for SC to keep it’s conference title hopes alive.

Final:
Trojans 66
Bears 63

Nice victory over the Hippies

Great play in the 2nd half. Recap up tomorrow afternoon. Got some stuff to take care of tonight.

Maybe she checked herself into a hospital to have her armpit hair permanently removed.
