Around SBN: Missouri Survives Scare, Louisville And Marquette Roll

3. Mays' 40 time: Mays' 40-yard dash time could be a huge story. It's hard to believe he has something to prove, but he does. A year ago, many considered Mays a top-five pick, but he elected to stay at USC for his senior season. Now, he's considered the second-best free safety in the draft behind Berry. If Mays runs a sub-4.4 40, he could jump back into the top 10 overall, but he's currently expected to be drafted in the middle of the first round. Physically, Mays is a freak. He's 6-foot-3, 231 pounds, and a sub-4.4 40 could be huge in improving his stock. Berry is considered a top-three pick because of his playmaking ability and is expected to establish himself immediately among the top safeties in the NFL.

A great safety with mobility and playmaking ability is vital in this day and age, as teams routinely face quarterbacks throwing from three- and four-receiver sets. Too often, defenses with average coverage at the safety position get carved up by good quarterbacks. Mays needs a fluid workout and a great 40 time to come closer to the perceptions scouts had of him in 2009.

Mays will be a terrific safety

Maybe he wont be competing for a “most interceptions” trophy, but he is play maker in his own right. I wonder if he’s going to keep his weight the same. It will be interesting to see if a team will possibly shift him to WILL.

I think it is funny how Berry who lost to the bRuins twice is now better than Mays, no fu_king way.

what?

mays is not even that good…

berry actually knows how to do things other then deliver big hits..

all mays does is go for the big hit…

berry is actually a safety who can cover and tackle and deliver big hits WHEN NEEDEd… unlike mays who has one thought in his mind… “Give BIG HIT”!

Exactly how was Mays hurt by staying?

Whatever questions there are about him now would have come up last year too. The idea he was a top 5 pick last year but not this one is absurd. Either he wasn’t really one then or he really is now.

his flaws were more exposed this year…

There were certainly people saying that Berry was the best safety in the country before this last season. Nothing has changed there.

Getting a good time at the NFL combine is important for every player who’s not a kicker. Anybody’s stock is going to go up or down if they record a time there very different from what they did in college.

They are the same flaws people talked about the year before.

Nothing has changed except people talking about it more.

You could also argue that he was being used to cover for inexperienced and injured linebackers, thus was positioned further forward and was doing more run coverage.

I don’t feel like I need to argue that Eric Berry is a bad safety – I think he’s an incredible player. I do feel, for all the rude things I may have said about Mays, that I need to point out that Berry wasn’t asked to help cover for almost an entire linebacking corps going to the NFL.

Exactly he was the whole defense past the line of scrimmage, why coach did that I don't know.

PC didn’t have much confidence in his whole defense and thats why the offense was so vanilla. Basically PC weenie out, I mean Mays was so far back that you could find him on your TV screen. Mays is my Ronnie Lott—Troy Palimaou, but that just me what would I know.

Rec'd!
