Asked if he was happy the hearing had ended, USC President Steven Sample said, "I can't even say no comment on no comment." Then as he walked away from a group of reporters, he added with what sounded like a sense of hope, "It will come out. It will be great."

Ruling
Now that the hearings are over, is there a timetable for a decision or is the NCAA just going to announce it one day?

6-10 weeks for a ruling
surprising comment by Sample. maybe he said, I “can’t believe it’s a quarter past eight!” I’ll take it as good news! perhaps just will prevail.
The deposition from Michael Michaels comes in March
Considering the NCAA is within their scope and rights to consider any new relevant information that may come from Michaels being deposed by Lloyd Lake’s attorneys. I’m sure USC will be given the benefit/courtesy of countering/answering/rebutting this potentially dangerous information- the judgements being handed down from the NCAA can change the entire dynamic of this whole situation. (McNair, Carroll, Garrett, and Compliance should have taken this into consideration while meeting with the NCAA this past week. I sure as hell hope they did!)
A few things are woefully being left out of this past week’s meeting. And that is:
1. Remember that Los Angeles Times story which reported that USC may have exceeded limits on the size of their football coaching staff because Pete Rodriguez, along with Alex Gibbs and other coaches with NFL experience, acted as additional coaches by attending practices, observing games and offering head football coach Pete Carroll behind-the-scenes advice during Carroll’s tenure at USC? I’m wondering if AD Garrett, Coach Carroll, and Compliance had to answer any of this issue in front of the NCAA committee the first two days?
2. And then there’s May 17, 2008,ex-Coach Watson was the driver of a car that struck Alaric Valentin, who then was so badly hurt in the accident- that he was ambulanced to a nearby hospital and later sued Watson AND USC. Watson, who was allegedly battling a painkiller addiction at the time, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. The suit claims that Watson had taken as many as seven Vicodin and several Soma (muscle relaxant) pills. Apparently, Valentin’s lawsuit states that USC was negligent because the university provided the vehicle to Watson and "was aware of or should have been aware of [his] addiction to prescription pain medications." The plaintiff, Valentin, also argues that USC’s own doctors knew about Watson’s addiction and had prescribed him pain medication. However, although Watson was employed by USC at the time (Watson left the team in January 2009), USC claims Watson was on his personal time when the accident took place. I’m wondering what the NCAA has to say or consider regarding THIS?
AD Garrett’s ass is on the line. Be sure of that. He had the M.O. to throw Coach Floyd under the bus- as he was either gonna fire him for whatever reasons regarding Guillory, was upset at the Louis Johnson PR-hitpiece on ESPN, AND he was working at ways to make himself look good regarding news of the Valentin lawsuit, as well as having to pull a -diamond- doozy outta his ass for explaining all of Coach Carroll’s perceived perks and “run of the place”.
Basketball it was.
But. . . . .is it enough. The NCAA has enough on allegations alone to fuck USC sideways. Let’s hope President Sample picked up that Tempe-tab. (just kidding) I’m hoping AD Garrett had an epic showing, like the ones he used to perform on the field.

The LA Times
allegations of an extra coach are bogus. The NCAA never even questioned that allegation. If they did, they would be taking every single D-I team into the infractions office. The LA Times is the only entity that is even reporting that story because it is so ridiculous.
I agree
I did some quick research and a fanpost the day that story broke, and while there’s some ambiguity in the rule, I found what looks to be a presentation given by the NCAA to member institutions that has an example pretty much right on point to what USC was doing.
If you look at that specific allegation
You will find that the LA Times is the only one making it, and the only one who keeps bringing it up. They are trying to sell it as a scoop of a story because Yahoo! beat them to the punch twice.
USC didn't exceed their staff limits.
and there is nothing the NCAA and or would do about Watson. As for the depos, they were suppose to be done months if not years ago and still haven’t. There is a reason for that and it’s because Michaels has no case. I wouldn’t hold your breath this time around again. If the NCAA really thought they would happen soon, they would have waited to have these hearings.
I find this comforting
Garrett is one thing, but Sample is no fool.
I agree but...
President Sample shouldn’t have left such a blunt tool at the head of the athletic department.

USC is not like other places
it is very hard to fire someone like Garrett. Speaking generally the University dislikes firing anyone, many people spend entire careers there. Secondly, Garrett is a Trojan legend. I have my problems what what Sample has done while at USC, but I believe that he is a man of great ability. His efforts in bringing “project Stanford” to fruition demonstrate that. I doubt he is so dishonest/ delusional as to claim a hearing that went poorly “will be great.”
Again, I agree
But sometimes you have to make exceptions. He didn’t have to fire Garrett, just make him Emeritus and move him to some other post. I also agree with you about Project Stanford, but worry that it could be taken too far. USC needs to hold on tight to its right of center identity, there’s more than enough committed lefty institutions to go around.

I also doubt that Sample
wanted to replace Garrett in his last year, its a decision I think he wants to leave up to the next guy (or gal). Political ID is not my main concern, its the overall ID that worries me. If USC tries to hard to became something else, it might end up becoming something no one wants.
If the Rumors are Right, then the BoT
made Sample’s decision for him. Roskin, Haden, et al were surely pissed at being blind-sided by PC with no succession plan in place. Plus, the PR hit from the Bush and Mayo affairs. I hope they were also pissed at the Floyd hoops implosion with a brand new Galen Center to fill.
PC’s success obviously blinded the VIPs. Sample even says that he “evaluated Garrett solely on results.” Results came easy under PC’s reign. A deeper evaluation of Garrett and the AD was in order, but not forthcoming.
I’m sure Kiffin will get in contact with SH, just like he does every week.

From what I hear
It’s pretty much a formality that Henderson eventually signs with ’SC.

The Michaels case is settled
Reggie Bush settled for $300K and kept the legal settlement’s proceedings and agreement air-tight sealed. It’s Lloyd Lake’s attorneys that are set to depose him. You’re right, they’ve (Lake) had case move through the courts at a snail’s pace- but it’s sometime in mid-March when this shit’s supposed to go down (deposition). I can understand “Joe Public” thinking, “This case is going nowhere because it hasn’t brought to light any revelations whatsoever and this guy Lake seems like a dirtbag.”
But this guy Lake isn’t going anywhere and he has all the incentive in the world to go after and stay after Bush: Greed and extortion. The man’s a thug and apparently he owes his mama some of that money he supposedly threw Bush’s way back in the day.
I welcome Michael’s deposition. I’m sure it would prove:
A. that Michaels was the one provided benefits for Bush’s parents
B. that Michaels is the only one out of the two (between Michaels and Lake) who kept and maintained business records of an accurate dollar amount of monies spent/used
C. that Lloyd Lake, although he prolly did give ’Bush and his parents some change from his own pockets- he has no paper trail of ANYTHING – as far as his claims of being owed or having spent $300K on Bush and his parents.
In short, Michaels deposition would prolly provide the NCAA information outlining that Bush parents DID enter into some beneficial agreement, thereby taking advantage of their son’s celebrity. They did this without Reggie’s knowledge and away from USC’s ability to question it and as well- they’ll finally find out (or circumstancially surmise) that Lloyd Lake is truly a dirtbag who got hosed by spending crazy amounts of money taking Reggie Bush out here and there trying to impress him with “bling” in the faint hopes of making money off him when/if he turns pro. He was “romancing” Bush, for all intents and purposes.
But, the NCAA can allege and judge anything it is they wish to. It’s incumbent upon USC to refute, with reasonable and verifiable proof of innocence. Either that, or a crafty way in interpreting NCAA bylaw and code?
Although the two reports seem like hogwash and there is denial in most Trojan hearts regarding them, the NCAA can include these in consideration of leadership and oversight. The coaches/advisors thing might be nit-picking. The Coach Watson issue might merit, in their eyes. (again, if they- the NCAA, are keen on hitting us hard or believe we are a campus gone awry- they will consider some or all of this and USC will have to answer for it)

The real dirtbags and shitheads in this, I believe are. . . .
. . . . .attorneys Salerno and Watson (for Louis Johnson and Lloyd Lake, respectively). I mean, in one way- I can understand. It’s their job to represent clients and litigate people and waste the public’s money by making government officials have to sit through unwarranted lawsuits. Watson? He’s as shady as Lake, two peas in a pod and by shaking down Bush- they thought they have “leverage”, hoping USC would influence Bush into settling with them. And USC would influence Bush due to the threat of NCAA violations. (they won, in some small regard. it’s made USC’s image more than just tainted. all the haters hate even more, and all the doubters have moved over to hate. all the teams we’ve smashed during Carroll’s tenure, who used to respect our program now think it’s full of cheaters. the comments on blogs has been just ridiculously retarded with misinformation that the media feeds them. the media has been full of backhanded compliments, snide remarks, misinformed comparative data regarding our current alleged violations vs. other violation cases in D-1 programs, and pithy assumptions of guilt due to our coaches leaving USC. Joe Blow has a hard-on for hate on we Trojans).
It’s no wonder that AD Garrett has remained mum to the fans and media. It’s illogical to me that he kept our ex-Coaches Carroll and Floyd in the dark as to our school’s internal investigation into these matters as well as the PAC 10’s investigation. His hands were tied as far as “information” for the media and fans. His natural disposition and characther flaws prevented him from being forthright with our ex-coaches.
Now Salerno? Louis Johnson is in the same boat as Lloyd Lake, to some degree. I hear he is an ex-journalist, addicted-then-recovering drug addict, and current wannabe “runner” for sports agents and managers. His allegations are entirely flimsy, yet he claims- “Why would I want to make this up?”. He says he’s not “hating” on OJ Mayo or USC, he says his allegations are bring forth “to help cause major change in the ways that recruits are treated, universities recruit, and level the playing field for colleges, coaches, and athletes”. ?? Right? His incentive to bring these allegations to light is to ride on the coat-tails of Lake’s lawsuit, being jilted by Guillory and jealous of his position in amateur/high-school basketball, and is simply just a “fame-whore”. What blows my mind in all this is that his attorney Salerno- is a cardinal-and-gold USC alumnus. Yup.
Lake and Johnson hope to make money and be famous in all this. Watson and Salerno hope for a percentage of all that. My two-cents.

Nice Bix
There are plenty of lawyers like Salerno and Watson, who are basically professional shake down artists. However, I don’t recall a lawyer extortion plan such as this waged against an athletic institution and two of its student-athletes. Of course, OJ and Reggie aren’t your normal student athletes. Maybe we’ll see more of this in the future?
High profile, big money college athletics + Reggie/OJ $100-500m athletes + Scumbag agents = More Extortions & Shakedowns in future???
More Extortions & Shakedowns in future???
I’ve got to think this is more the norm than we know.

Well
It’s not like he’s going to say “WE’RE IN FOR A SHIT STORM”.
USC feels very confident after the hearings, that’s a good thing.
