This Cam Newton thing is really getting crazy!

Lots of stuff coming out today...

Check out this piece in Tiger Droppings.

It seems that Auburn Super Booster Milton McGregor maybe involved.

SportsByBrooks has some interesting info as well.

Earlier today I report that noted Auburn sports booster Milton McGregor was arrested by the FBI last month on political bribery allegations following a lengthy federal investigation that included wiretaps.

TMZ.com is now reporting:

According to sources connected to the probe … FBI agents looking into the Newton recruiting controversy are also asking about Milton McGregor — a dog track owner arrested last month for allegedly bribing Alabama politicians to vote pro gambling.

We’re told agents asked someone connected to the Newton case if he was familiar with McGregor or the bribery scandal.

Click on the "Earlier today" link above to see all the connections, twists and turns...this is some wild stuff.

Here is the bribery indictment from the NYT.

The FBI must have overheard discussions about players on those wire taps while the FBI was building their case against those arrested in the bribery case.

This thing makes USC's problems look like like a kiddie tea party.

Unreal!

It's ironic and

It’s offensive that the MSM is comparing Auburn to us. What they’ve been accused of doing is FAR worse than anything we did, and yet we are painted in this rogue light, while Auburn gets the wait and see response.

I’m not surprised, just disappointed.

I think the NCAA bit off a LOT more than they can chew.

Thanks for continuing to run a great outfit Paragon. It’s still where I come first for all of my USC news.

What an attraction next year’s Heisman will be, sitting in some Boise-glass case! (wtf is that no-star-power QB’s name on Boise St?

Can of worms

Now that the Heisman has vacated an award winner, I bet they are a bit nervous about this whole debacle at Auburn.

You're probably right

If a booster is involved Auburn is screwed. It kind of makes me a bit sad though. When we played Auburn back in 2003 in Alabama, they were probably the most gracious hosts that I have ever met at an away game. Many of their fans invited us to their tailgates as we walked by and were generally excited that we travelled all the way to Alabama to see them. For the sake of those nice people I hope this Newton stuff isn’t true.

If it is true, then the NCAA is going to have to explain how this situation isn’t as bad, or worse than Reggie’s if they end up letting Auburn off the hook. Right now it is all rumor, and conjecture. God help those guys if he ends up being ineligible. They are taking a real risk by playing him.

Tark Quote About NCAA & Fairness

What S.C.N.’52 said reminded me of something that former college basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian once said about the NCAA. It went something like this: “Kentucky would break the rules and the NCAA would set an example by punishing Louisiana-Southern for it.”

YAP I have always been a fan of Tark, can't believe USC didn't hire him.

Maybe one of the best coaches ever in college BB considering he didn’t have the likes of Sam Gilbert to pay his players. I always liked this quote by Tark I don’t need to pay or buy my players anything at LB State, they are transfers and already have there cars and money.

Lets face it USC fans and supporters the Bruins are superior in all aspects of life, heck I here they can wipe their Butts with their mind.

Hiroshima or Nagasaki?

This IS unbelievable & it seems that it is going to blow up soon….
Below are excerpts from the tiger droppings link that Para posted above, it’s long but an amazing read….

Now, take into account the similarities of the BoT and Colonial, and the ability to launder money through the various foundations becomes mind-boggling. Also don’t forget that McGregor is major gambling, betting houses, casino business, and is reportedly now the main money-man between the Boosters and Newton. Now are you starting to see what is so disturbing to both the FBI and the NCAA? In short, Major Gambling tied into illegal activities in College Athletics. Also don’t forget Saturday’s game with Georgia had the line pulled not once, but twice. Think inside information was being passed? This is not going to end well, and why so many are speculating Auburn’s dismissal from the SEC and ultimately Athletic Death Penalty. This is also the speculation as to why Mike Slive tried to drag his feet regarding the investigation hoping it would just go away. Now look at what is being reported in Sunday’s New York Times, specifically the quote…….

“But what could happen in the next few weeks is a nightmare script for the N.C.A.A., the SEC and college football. From the involvement of the Federal Bureau of Investigation to the gluttonous news media attention, the story is one of the most explosive in the history of college football.”

’m not sure how this will end, or the validity of what is being reported. But I can tell you most in Alabama think there is a major bomb getting ready to drop, and this is being reported on both sides. Whatever the outcome, this story sounds like something from a Grisham Novel, Huh?

"…The Feds have tape from wire taps made on McGregor and other prominent Auburn boosters from their investigation. The Newton’s were just shopping their talent’s to the wrong people at the wrong time and thus there is hard evidence available that incriminates everyone involved. It’s only a matter of time that all of this information becomes public.

FBI found out about Cam before the NCAA did while wiretapping Milton McGregor and others related to the casino/bingo indictments. They uncovered conversations with McGregor, Auburn and Cam’s uncle in Michigan. McGregor paid $250K to the uncle through a PAC and other hidden entities and the uncle funneled the money to Cecil.

The FBI gave this information to the NCAA sometime after the indictments were handed down. They had to sit on the information for 6 months until the grand jury indicted the men and women in the gambling deal. All of the wiretap information was sealed and that is why the delay in investigating. The NCAA had to go to Miss St to see if Cecil had solicited money from them as well. That is why Miss St is involved. They are basically connecting all of the dots. Miss St may be cleared because they told Cecil no. He then went to Auburn. The offer was on the table from McGregor but Cam wanted to play at Miss St and not Auburn. When Miss St declined to pay him, he went to where the money was… hence the comment, “The money was too much.” The FBI met with the Miss St coaches, John Bond and Bill Bell today to get their official statements.

I love it!

I do feel sorry for Auburn, and wish that it were Miami, Florida, LSU or Texas. What I really wish is that the Feds had NCAA investigators on tape accepting bribes to keep the story quiet. I would love to see the NCAA indelibly soiled in this somehow. Unfortunately, Auburn in unlucky enough to represent the ubiquitous corruption of SEC football in this story.

Of course, the NCAA and MSM just spent 4 years trying to paint USC with that brush. Glass houses? Can of worms indeed, Frak.

The only things that they have us on

is an assistant coach “he said she said” situation, and an aloof AD in regards to compliance. I’m sure our repeat offender status will be the “get out of jail free” card to other institutions who aren’t on probation, but have done worse offenses.

by frak on Nov 18, 2010 5:38 AM PST up reply actions

The broad brush is being applied

The media spin is appalling. They’ve yet to show us that anyone affiliated with USC was even remotely connected with Lamar’s shenanigans down in San Diego. Instead you have media clowns out there taking the opportunity to throw us in with the SEC chain gangs. Everybody out there is saying “like USC.” It’s moronic, lazy and downright insulting.

Now that Miss St. has turned into “Jimmy the Weasel” Fratianno and the Feds are involved the whole stinking mess that is the SEC may well come tumbling down. You can bet the Auburn “boosters” will gladly rat out their conference mates in order to save their own asses.

+100...but in some ways even worse

…than politicians! Because at least everybody knows the politicians are slaves to a self-serving agenda.

Imagine a judicial system where Democrats played the role of prosecutor, judge, jury, and executioner over a powerful Republican accused of the crime. Imagine that the Democrats could deliberate in complete secrecy with no oversight or accountability. Think about it…this makes about as much sense as allowing any school accused of a violation to be dismantled by its competitors. Especially when you consider that the very committee with the most power in these matters is chaired by a man with a blatantly obvious affiliations and loyalties which create an unndisputed conflict of interests, and a man who has proven that he will cheat, lie, and compromise his integrity in pursuit of his agenda.

by so.cal.native1952 on Nov 18, 2010 11:01 AM PST up reply actions

I said this before...

…but USC is very valuable to the Pac-12. USC should demand that it’s fellow Pac-12 schools petition the NCAA to treat USC fairly in the appeal process. The vast majority of other NCAA schools could care less about USC getting abused by the COI. After all, last decade USC embarrassed every elite team from another conference that it faced. Still, USC is entitled to fair and just treatment by the NCAA COI, including due process, a good faith appraisal of the evidence presented against it, and reasonable penalties for established violations, based both on precedent and how similar penalties will be assessed in the future. That has not happened yet in USC’s case.

The Pac-10 schools, however, will carry a lot more weight with the NCAA than USC alone. There is no LEGITIMATE reason why they should be reluctant to demand accoutability from the NCAA in this matter, If they are unwilling to support a member institution in it’s quest for justice, there is little reason for USC to remain in the Pac-12. JMO.

Re: +100...but in some ways even worse

Thanks to the COI’s hammering of USC, I recently reacquainted myself with Jerry Tarkanian’s history with the NCAA. Being a native of Las Vegas and growing up as a fan of UNLV b-ball, I figured that I had supported Tark just outta some tribalistic impulse. However, upon further review, I realize that Tark really was railroaded by the NCAA. Hell, the fact that it took so long for their corrupt operating procedures (especially as it related to investigations into rulebreaking) to be outted remains a scandal in and of itself. But their crusade against Tark for having the temerity to call them on their b.s. was equally scandalous.

Which Vegas H.S.?

My freshman & sophomore years were at Eldorado High. My junior & senior years were at the Las Vegas Academy of Performing Arts — which had just been opened at the campus of the original, decommissioned Las Vegas High School in downtown. My major at the Academy was drama. (Because I’m such a drama queen, right? I know! I know! I set myself up for that one! :-P )

The "Root"

They say that money is the root (or rot) of all evil. I say find the money then follow it. If all that stuff on TD proves to be true then, it seems, this process is well under way. Again, if true, this could be quite a story unfolding. Wonder if the NCAA needs 4 years to get on top of this one… especially since, it seems, the FBI is doing some if not all of the heavy lifting right now. And where’s Yahoo Sports?
