Around SBN: Will Rhymes 'Fine' After Being Hit By Pitch And Fainting

A Star is Born: Maurice Jones, (and some roster thoughts)

Bumped - JK

It was really too bad that tonight's match-up between USC and Santa Clara was not televised because anyone not listening in on radio or watching the stream at usctrojans.com missed out on a truly spectacular performance by our freshman point guard in the 86-73 Trojan victory. All night MoJo carved up the defense and got to the basket basically at will en route to a 29 point, 5 assist performance. The Michigan native also hit two very deep three pointers and 2 or 3 of his assists coming off of deep dribble penetration resulted in easy baskets for Kid Euro (who finished with 22 points and 11 boards). And before I get too far a big time hat tip to the other freshman Jones, recording 15 points for the gme, who shot 60% (3 of 5) from the perimeter and looked solid on defense. Both of these freshman are the real deal, and I'm pretty certain SC has found the starting PG for the next 4 years.

Roster musings after the jump.

Star-divide

Looking at things as they stand it is pretty clear what the rotation will look like once Jio Fontan is eligible. During tonight's game M. Jones, Vucevic, and Stepheson all played the full 40 while B. Jones played 38. Marcus Simmons would have likely seen more than the 16 minutes he played but some careless fouls saw him ride the bench. Seeing that Curtis Washington has not seen an iota of playing time I wouldn't be surprised to see O'Neill red shirt him and simply employ small ball if either of our primary bigs get in foul trouble with either Simmons, Evan Smith (if he ever gets over his perpetual shoulder, no that is not a typo), or frosh Garrett Jackson sliding down to the 4. I'll have to check back at the Kansas game, but here's what I think we'll see during conference play

PG: M Jones

SG: Fontan

SF: B Jones

PF: Vucevic

C: Stepheson

6th: Simmons

Curtissssssssssssssssssssssssss!

I just like saying that name. Say it with me, “CURTISSSSSSSSSSSSSS!” (Curtis Mayfield also happens to be one of my all time favorite singers. Especially on this jam: So In Love “The Impressions” – soul group; it’s a slow soul jam, seems outta character for me- this is true; hey! not all my CD’s and albums are metal, punk, and techno!!!!!

What I’m impressed mostly with this 2010/2011 team this early in the season is the lack of PF’s- especially from the big men (Stepheson & Vucevic). Shooting 6 for 11 from the arc is outstanding, I’d just hate to live and die from that part of the floor. We’re easily winning the rebound game in our early games, hopefully that carries over to our early-tournament and PAC-10 play.

Last year, we had a problem at the PG spot. This year we just might, again. Not for a lack of quality/experience. . . .but for having too dadgum-many. When Jio arrives. . . . .Holy Assists!!!!!!!

Maurice Jones. . . . .that’s my NEW MO! (“Mo”- in slang parlance means- very, very good friend. Short for “Maurice”- and a “Maurice” is a talented athlete/scholar. Just saying)

As always- great post LS.

(And as well- as always. . . sorry for the off-tangent-ness & verbosity of Bix)

Give this man a drink!

So so true, Gnossos! And the music?? That is some of the best arranged contemporary music EVER on that album. Production was solid, too.

Curtis and his voice is one thing. The social awareness of “The Quiet Genius” was leaps and bounds ahead of the curve. And he was “nice” about it all. Never “in your face”, you know.

Great American, that Curtis Mayfield.

Yea, much more of an offensive game.

Did score 60+ in a high school game. Going to be times when he just goes off. Consistency will be the thing, but he did after 13 points in the opener, as well.

Jones' boys score +50 against a solid squad

Beautiful sign. I was thinking that USC would have to rely on consistent scoring from Simmons and Smith, but these Jones boys can light the lamp!

The season is looking better every day….until Alex or Nic foul out of a game. :)

You can't put sanctions on the fkn endzone! Bowls are for salad!
