James Boyd to Walk On to Basketball Team

Missed this earlier in the week. Per the LAT:

James Boyd is a 6-foot-4, 245-pound redshirt freshman backup defensive end for the USC football team.

But Monday, Boyd was at men's basketball practice, where he said he'll be more often when football season ends as he plans to walk on to the Trojans hoops team.

Boyd said he might be able to practice with the basketball team as soon as this week -- he said he's just waiting for football Coach Lane Kiffin to give him the all clear -- but that he should definitely be with the team after the football team's season ends against UCLA on Dec. 4.

Boyd, who was a four-sport star at L.A. Jordan High, was named to the All-L.A. City team as a senior when he averaged 23.8 points and 22.4 rebounds for the basketball team.

If and when Boyd joins the basketball team, he should be able to bolster a thin front-line.

"I know my role," he said. "I know what I can do."

With the departures of Davis Rozitis and Leonard Washington, this team needs all the help it can get, especially at forward/center.

Yah he can really play and will help with rebounding because he boxes out so well.

Glad to see this he could have had a BB schollie to a # of schools, he will be a asset and leader.

We didn't

The only players of note we really played against during my years were Justin Cobb (who just transferred to Cal from Minnesota), Hollis Thompson and Renaldo Woolridge. Non-league play never featured top-notch competition in terms of having nationally recruited guys. And Mission League didn’t have many D-1 guys not playing for Harvard or Loyola.

Isn't he academically ineligible?

How can he walk on if he is Academically ineligible for football?

No, he is not academically ineligible

he is suspended by Kiff from football temporarily, probably for missing class/tutoring/study sessions/grades. but, Kiff/Baxter’s discipline standards differ from the school’s official standards.

Kiff has suspended about 8 guys at various times, but only Moody McNeal was officially academically ineligible per the school, I think.

You can't put sanctions on the fkn endzone! Bowls are for salad!

james boyd

why doesnt usc use james boyd as a dual-threat qb or wildcat qb he threw for a lot yards in high school and ran for 600 yards his senior year you can run a little bit of zone read with dillion baxter or dj morgan or black mamba without the fear of barkley getting hurt.

i dont mean a covential qb i mean like a pure wildcat qb he would know the convential offense but due it out wildcat /slash wishbone type formation not a pure passer but he can pick five to 10 rushing and throw it every once in a while or like usc version of the pistol
to get athletes in space
