Here is Pete Carroll's "proposed" deal with Seattle
From the LAT
Although the Seahawks and Carroll are close to a deal, which is believed to be a five-year contract to become president and head coach at $7 million a year, nothing has been signed, said sources close to the situation who are not authorized to speak on his behalf. The Seahawks are owned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, the league's richest owner, and are among the most image conscious franchises in the NFL. They will be looking to make an immediate splash with a coaching replacement while also trying to prevent former general manager Mike Holmgren, who is the new president of the Cleveland Browns, from raiding key members of their personnel and coaching staff.
That is a lot of Windows 7 money...

Seattle Seahawks Fans Hate Pete Carroll!
Repeating my posts elsewhere – 90 percent of Seahawks fans are also UW or WSU fans and they DESTEST and HATE Pete Carroll. Listen to AM 710 ESPN radio in Seattle, go stream it on the web, and listen in. The Seahawk fans and Seattle media will undermine PC from Day One. Taking this job is suicidal. Seattle fans are up in arms over someone as hated as PC taking over their beloved Seahawks. Can I say this again: Seahawks Fans Hate Pete Carroll.
That is a lot of money and control to turn down.
I hate to say this but with sanctions looming and SC coming off of a less then stellar season, (by SC standards) I think it makes sense for him to bail.

Seahawk fans are clearly idiots. I hate Nick Saban, but if he carpetbagged his way over here, I’d somehow find a way to live with it, you know what I mean?
Seattle Fans in general
have an irrational hatred of almost all things Southern California. USC is no. 1 on the most-hated things in Southern California list.
uscdude, when you own the franchise and have the money Allen has…Yes, the fans are a consideration. However; if you are intent on spicing things up a bit in Seattle holding the current staff, getting a guy with an eye for talent in the draft then Carroll is the way to go.
Seattle starts winning some games and the vitriol and animosities will recede.
Can Carroll redeem himself in the eyes of his NFL peers and owners, only time will tell.
This is a itch he has, and he want to scratch it. Can’t blame the man for that.
You are right
and Pete stepped into a fairly hostile situation when he took over as USC Trojans coach as well, the LA media and many SC fans were against him, but he won them over.
Maybe Pete has the magic to do it in Seattle too.
You are right
uscdude,
you also mentioned the dislike of Carroll by the UW and WSU fans. Most of the UW fans have really taken to Sark and Holt…there is no known animosities between Sark and Carroll, it would not surprise me in the least that Sark and Carroll are seen about in Seattle socially and Sark becomes Carrolls biggest ambassador of good will in the Seattle area.
Sark eventually wants to wind up in the NFL, Carroll will be his Ice Breaker and supporter when the time comes. Connections…connections…connections, that’s what being a Trojan is all about!
I am of the opinion
that if Carroll works his magic on the Seahawks, and wins a superbowl, the UW and WSU fans will suddenly start to like him. Also you are forgetting the fact that the Washington schools need no longer fear to lose to Pete Carroll with a high degree of frequency anymore. That has to have them cheering.
$7 MILLION IS NOT ENOUGH
He’d be a fool to go for less than $10 Million for 5 years.
While USC could easily raise his contract to >$5Million, the clincher is that there is NO STATE INCOME TAX in the State of Washington, while California’s income tax is 9.3% plus a 1% surcharge on earnings over $1 Million; and you can be certain that taxes will go up as soon we have the inevitable installation of a Democrat governor.
PC is a huge democrat honk and true believer, but being the “King of LA” is getting too expensive these days. In the end, one more high earner will be pushed out by our profligate state government, USC football WILL decline (UCLA and Cal will have to get used to riding the bus) and California will continue its steady march towards Third World Nation status. And you wonder why businesses and high net worth individuals are getting the hell out?

Oh come on. Where did you get the idea that either party in CA could do anything at this point? Never mind have the gumption to cut spending, reduce services, and overhaul / increase the tax code?
I’m always fascinated at the notion that people would leave somewhere they liked just to pay lower taxes – by which I mean, somewhere less desirable. I could pocket more cash if I lived in Florida, but then I’d be living in Florida.
He’s moving to Seattle, not Tuscaloosa. BTW, Los Angeles official unemployment is now 12.6%. Per the LAT, In 2008, 135,173 more people left California than moved in, from what I’ve seen the 2009 number will be significantly worse.

In the specific case, Seattle’s not the ass-end of the earth, but you also mentioned a broader trend of other high-net-worth people leaving CA. They presumably aren’t all moving to Seattle; I seem to remember the last exodus in the early 90s because of a recession and rioting minorities took a lot of people to Las Vegas and Phoenix, both of which are like LA minus the decent weather.
As for people leaving CA, it might not just be taxes. General cost of living, ho-hum schools, ho-hum infrastructure, density of population, lack of jobs, cost of real estate (in places other than the inland empire)… all sorts of reasons to head out. That’s part of being a state built on both immigration and domestic migrations – people who leave one place are not immune to heading home, in much the same sense that our collective mythology about the US being built from immigrants tends to leave out the fact that there are always immigrants who decide it’s not to their liking and go home.
Incidentally, tax migration is an issue for English soccer clubs, because the Spanish government has established a preferential tax rate which is essentially for high-net-worth foreigners. It turns out that people would rather live in Madrid and pay less tax than say in Liverpool. Which is easier to understand than say moving to Nevada.
It’s called gallows humor Desmo, oy…

If Pete Takes the Seahawks Deep in the Playoffs
Seattle will swear Pete invented coffee, fir trees, fleece jackets, and that he was the Huskies coach before Sark.
DC, Frak, Alfa you’re all correct about the miraculous curative effects of winning.
Ahem, Pete is Sark’s daddy.

I do love PC
But, I must say that I understand why his frenetic, rah-rah, sanguine style may have been ill-suited for the pros. I think he is a great defensive coach, and a great team leader. But, not sure about talent evaluation. Sucks on offense. Great work ethic.
Can he consistently outscheme in the NFL? Will pros respond to his cheerleading leadership? Is he a great talent evaluator?
Great college coach. I must admit that I’m not certain that this trip to the pros will be any more fruitful than the last one.
John Clayton was just quoted
as saying “70 percent” of Seattle fan reaction to PC as Seahawks coach is negative
I seriously doubt Allen will withdraw the offer because of a bunch of trailer trash fusky fans.

As in, “I spoke to 10 fans at a bar, 7 of them were appalled, and 3 told me they don’t swing that way… I don’t understand those ones, but I suppose their girlfriends can explain when I’m finished with them.” Because I have this notion that Clayton is a total sex machine under the mild-mannered exterior.
