What a Way to Start Off the Third day of the New Year

Edited -  We will have more on this later on today. Joey and I are writing up a piece - P

Per the AP:

Los Angeles, Calif. - The University of Southern California (USC) today announced that it has implemented self-imposed sanctions on its men’s basketball program for violating NCAA rules.

The sanctions are a result of a University investigation that found NCAA rules violations related to O.J. Mayo, who played for the USC’s men’s basketball team during the 2007-2008 season.

“USC takes allegations of NCAA rules violations very seriously. When allegations were made regarding our men’s basketball program we immediately began an investigation and worked closely with the NCAA and the Pac-10 in an attempt to ascertain the truth,” said USC Athletic Director Mike Garrett. “When we’ve done something wrong, we have an obligation to do something about it and that is exactly what we are doing here.”

I think they should play even harder (if that's possible)

And show Mike Garrett that he made a mistake in turning this team of hard-nosed, dedicated players into sacrificial lambs.

Win the regular season championship and make Garrett wonder about what might have been.

by insomniacslounge on Jan 3, 2010 11:35 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think that they have the offense

to make a real run for the championship. But I do feel sorry for kids like Gerrity who is on his last year of eligibility.

by frak on Jan 3, 2010 11:38 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Those kids got the shaft

What your basketball team has accomplished this season given all of the turmoil and defections has been nothing short of remarkable. Their effort and achievement is something that would make any fan of team sports proud. It really blows that they’re having to pay the price for the misdeeds of others. I understand that it’s the way of the NCAA, but it still sucks nonetheless.

by insomniacslounge on Jan 3, 2010 11:42 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Well, fair or not, I suspect that they are one step ahead of the NCAA but no more. We’ve said on this site before now that it might have been possible to escape the institutional control accusations about Reggie Bush until the Mayo shenanigans came to light. So, they’re addressing the second problem in the hopes of drawing fire away from the first one.

In other words, I bet the current team was about to take a hit anyway.

This is so transparent

USC nukes the basketball team to save the football team.

I think we all concluded the same thing when Floyd was shit-canned in a New York minute.

It might work, but I doubt it.

I agree

The timing confirms that. Comes a few days after Reggie Bush loses his court decision and on the heels of whatever happened with Joe McKnight.

Guillory is the reason USC basketball can't escape from this fate

Floyd should have known that Guillory was bad news. Garrett should have known too. What sanctions is Garrett going to impose on himself I wonder. I’m betting that he won’t take any of the blame.

Mike Garrett must be fired! Immediately if not sooner! His lazy incompetent ass must go! So so many good AD options must be out there who would love a job like USC AD. Fire Mike Garrett!

Rough deal for the players

What’s irksome is that Tim Floyd ran away and nothing will happen to Mayo, but the current players get punished.

by TheElusiveShadow on Jan 3, 2010 1:01 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Punish Floyd, Guillory not the current team

As soon as Floyd resigned out of the blue I could tell that it was only the beginning for some very rough times head for the basketball team. Although the team’s performance this season has wildly exceeded my expectations (as well as everyone else’s) the players on the team right had nothing to do with the recruiting violations that Floyd and Guillory took part in, and shouldn’t have to bite the bullet.

as for Garrett, has to go after Floyd, Guillory and to some extent Mayo

by sharpie20 on Jan 3, 2010 1:02 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

WOW!

Mike Garrett can go suck an egg. Jesus what poor timing this announcement is. Do people honestly believe the accusations of a convicted felon trying to sell a book as he claims that Tim Floyd gave him $1000 in broad daylight months after OJ Mayo signed his LOI to play for USC? Give me a freakin’ break. What a joke Garrett is, hires Floyd and demands winning immediately and doesn’t give him any support when the University faces a little heat from the spineless NCAA.

Sorry Dwight, Marcus Johnson, and Mike. You guys are awesome and I hope you continue to play your hearts out and take pride in our university. You all deserve better than this, in fact a lot better than this and you’ll get a big fight on from me if I bump into you on campus.

No...

Keep in mind that the post season ban is for THIS YEAR ONLY…

Why would anyone transfer? They would have to sit out a year anyway.

Hopefully Garrett got the NCAA to sign off this but I would not count on it…

Throwing the BB Program Under the BUS (AGAIN)

Why would our AD put out a recorded message rather than stand up and “face the music” by presenting this stunning “throw the basketball program under the bus” announcement in a live press conference? Also, what “new” facts have recently surfaced that brought about this stunning announcement? Disgraceful.

by cpb4usc on Jan 3, 2010 2:21 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Why a message, BECAUSE HE IS THE BIGGEST COWARD IN THE WORLD.

The only thing on SC is the $ 1,000 payoff allegedly, the other MAYO crap was okayed by Ncaa clearing house. Unless Garrett, Floyd, or anyone in Athletic Dept. knew of any moneys or gifts, the Ncaa can’t do anything. So garrett is protecting FB program which generates more money, to bad the accelerator peddle stuck on the wrong Lexus.

He’s been letting his inner Bobby Knight loose on the court and will get canned at the first opportunity. He’ll do a good job this season and move on. The job is Gib Arnold’s in ApriL

What you don’t see on TV is KO’s wild courtside behavior. I’ve attended two games and could see he’s still got some significant anger management issues. Just yesterday he went absolutely nuts on Lewis, Stepheson and Donte Smith, kicking a chair and slapping a whiteboard out of the hand of one of the assistants, he also got on the refs and came close to getting T’d up.
Same ‘ol KO; who knows what’s going down during practice or in his office, but this is also a not so gentle reminder that he too is on probation.

But like you said, same ol' KO

I’ve seen Kevin O’Neill quite a bit in person over the years. The anger management issues aren’t anything new. That’s the coach that he’s always been. The admin had to know that going in (not that they had flexibility to be very selective). It would seem strange to me to “serve notice” in the midst of a winning streak.

sorry for the tangent, but speaking of attending games

I notice a lot of empty seats in the lower bowl on tv (I’m not counting the student seats), but can’t actually find tickets for those seats on sale anywhere. Anybody have any info on how to acquire those unused seats?

by insomniacslounge on Jan 3, 2010 3:51 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I've only sat down there once, and got them on Stub Hub

The seats are held by Galen Founders, as you can see they don’t show up. The worst part is that most of them don’t bother to re-sell them. The student section has been empty because they’re all out of town, skiing or in Can Cun or whatever.

’91 bus admin grad. what year were you, frak?

by DFWTrojan on Jan 3, 2010 5:03 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I remember those days – I was never much of a basketball fan, but some friends were, so we’d occasionally head over and take in a game. Specifically, walk in about 10 minutes before the start and be 5 rows back from the court. Unless it was Arizona or UCLA.

by DC Trojan on Jan 3, 2010 6:16 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I can explain that

The lower seats are owned by the Galen Founders. Basically that’s a bunch of people that paid fees to hold those seats for their lifetime. Most of these guys don’t put their tickets on stubhub, and most of them take the winter break off away from the Galen Center. I think that there will be more tickets used now that the holidays are over.

Basically all of the tickets are sold, but not everyone chooses to sell them.

You must be living under the illusion that USC gives a rat’s ass about basketball. It’s about command an control from Obersturmführer Von Garrett’s bunker. The orders from the top were simple: Protect the football program at all cost, and clean up the mess before Steven Sample retires.

I suspect you’re right. Sample’s put 18 years into this, and I suspect that if he’s learned anything, it’s to not leave an athletic department in chaos for his successor.

by DC Trojan on Jan 3, 2010 6:18 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I’ll bet dollars to donuts that Sample will leave the stage with USC tied for #25 with UCLA. The quest is so important that not even football is safe.

I don’t think that’s true. Football – and the dollars it brings in revenue and donations – are part of the warp and weft of the university. Sample’s smart enough to know to stay away – how else do you think that Garrett’s been given all that rope to play with?

by DC Trojan on Jan 3, 2010 9:30 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

There is something going on with Ncaa, yes to much money for the ncaa to give up.

The football money stays within the Athletic Department, and it is nothing compared to the research dollars and donations that come in when you join the ranks of America’s elite universities. A successful athletic department is a definite plus, but the Ivies get along just fine and they don’t even give out athletic scholarships. The one thing the big boys don’t want is to be embarrassed by sanctions for “lack of institutional control.” It’s a new world down there, and this ain’t your Daddy’s USC. I’ve had the opportunity to meet three Trustees and the farthest thing from their mind is football.

very good points

I’m sure many would admit that the purpose of making USC into what it’s becoming is very important to the higher-ups. The value of a SC degree has risen, and that perception can be viewed retroactively.

But I do think that the USC administration will do everything it can to protect their FB program. Sucks for the current team.

Mike Garret

Should be fired. I don’t think he will last the year. Very disappointed he didn’t also resign while he laid these sanctions. Garret has done nothing to the athletc department besides hiring Pete Carroll. He nuked the baseball team, our women’s bb team and is now trashing our basketball team. I can’t bare to watch USC headlining negatively on the news.

Sample has to see Garret as the person who put USC’s athletic program under fire in the last couple of years and NOT see him as the alum who hired Pete Carroll.

If not now, WHEN?

Would it be any different if the NCAA finally got it’s balls out it’s purse and did some ‘concluding’????

If not these sanctions? WHAT?

Everybody KNEW what they were getting into: The head coach, the returning players, the freaking janitors who cleaned the Galen Center. If not, damn! What a buncha dummies!

Yes, Garrett is just saving his arse and the football program’s potential future sanctions. I can’t fault him, he’s doing what an AD is supposed to do. Be a leader and do what’s best for the institution (thank gawd! mike- oh where, oh where, have your synapses gone????), the athletic department (oh shit, you mean MY JOB’S on the line for all this mess? what the. . .?), and the football program (Mo’ money, mo’ money, mo’ money!. . . . .).

Covering ass and curling tale. Just coverin’ ass, curlin’ tale, alright! Garrett’s a pig, but I can’t fault him for actually doing his job for once. Sad day in USC history. Better to have this/these sad day(s) now, than to be hit with ‘the death penalty’ (potentially), later.

This would hope to prevent all that. Frak said it best in a different thread: We’re not on, nor have we been on NCAA-probation in a long, long time! Had we been on probation? Sure, give us the SMU, Alabama, & Florida treatment! But other than that? Fuck all you dumb motherfuckers who wanna see us burn! Fuck. You. Bitches!

Our AD FINALLY did something that might give us hope to prevent all that now!

Fuck. All. You. Haters!

Ahem. . . . . . .

. . . . . . .and . . . . .Fight On! To all my fellow Trojans and Trojan fans!

Damn straight SoCal!

I feel your pain. I got it all the way over here. I hate that our bball team is playing for not even the disgarded shells of peanuts this year. Garrett’s impetus to get this shit off his plate was the arbritration decision that was finalized a week or two ago with regards to Bush. He wanted the Bush stuff to get quashed, it didn’t- is unsure where Bush/Cromwell are headed with Lake & his legal team, so- he HAD TO do this now. To save face, show leadership, and hopefully get minimally punished.

He does not care what you or I think, he only cares about himself- his ‘strange’, his fair share, and his status as a major college AD. I don’t think he cares about USC whatsoever, other than that we do well enough in sports for people to grease his chain at all the conventions/seminars/panels he gets invited to.

That’s my story on it all. (could be wrong, though)

Fight On SoCal. (don’t give up on us homie, even outta anger, Mo! it’ll all pass, and we will ALL be better for it. guaranteed!)
