Maualuga Charged with DUI

Some people just don't get it...

Former USC linebacker Rey Maualuga, coming off his rookie season with the Cincinnati Bengals, has been arrested on drunk driving charges in northern Kentucky.

Maualuga was arrested at 3:11 a.m. EST today and charged with operating a vehicle under the influence and with careless driving, according to Kenton County Jail records.

According to the Associated Press, Maualuga, 23, was being held without bond and no attorney was listed for him.

A second-round pick last April, Maualuga started the first 15 games for the Bengals before suffering a broken ankle that ended his season.

I don't want to hear any excuses...

I just spent six hours-plus hours in surgery watching my docs put a rod a femur, fix a broken pelvis and plate a proximal tibia...all because of a drunk driver.

I can't tell you how pissed this makes me reading this. I am off the Rey bandwagon for the time being.

Pathetic.

Nothing new here

Even here at ’SC, Rey had the reputation for being a big party guy. Apparently, it was pretty common to see him roaming around 28th street getting completely hammered. A quote from a USC fraternity president:

Rey would always come out to the Row on weekends and get totally blacked out. It was definitely his thing.

Over-drinking is just what he does. Absolutely pathetic, but not terribly surprising to see this.

A frat president criticizing someone for drinking too much? Now I really have seen everything.

C'mon guys

Do we really have to dwell on this? He’s gone now.

I take no prisoners when it comes to drinking and driving...

I have fixed too many people and seen too many die in 27 years of being in orthopedics…

You’ll get no argument from me on that front.

Not really, every school and every family has its scoundrels. Colleges and Universities are not responsible in any way for the behavior of their graduates, except for UCLA’s grads because everyone knows they’re practically perfect people!

Ah-men I agree on all of that Loco, What someone does in their personal life is their bag.

I know some jerk sports writer will say but he is a row model, if someone uses anyone other than family as row models i can’t see that. Heck I couldn’t possibly use my Alcoholic father as a row model, except for maybe he always went to work 5 days a week. Only thing is he went to the Beer Bar after work each day, thank god for sports and my mother. Someday Ray will have to face his shit and hopefully he sees the right path or he will end up like a friend on mine. Eight DUIs in 15 years and 3 prison terms thank god he never hurt anyone, maybe this time he will stay straight.

Don't 98% of 23 year olds drink to the point of excess on occasion?

This is common behavior of society at large. Hopefully, he will learn his lesson, likely with the help of counseling provided by the NFL. Actually, it’s a good thing that he got caught early before he hurt someone. From now on, Rey, take a private car. You can afford it.

We don't know if that story is credible

but, I feel empathy for Rey. I recall hearing of a rough childhood for him. If he has that serious of a problem, then he is battling inner demons. The NFL has some great support for players on these issues, so I hope that he gets the help that he needs. None of us have walked a day in his shoes.

Back to football, I always thought that Cush was better prepared to play the Mike. Imagine what Cush would have done there.

He plainly had his issues

Both of his run-ins with the authorities at SC were when he was drinking – and by all accounts he got it under control enough that he wasn’t being aggressive with it, sober or not.

But for his own sake, and the sake of anyone on the roads, I hope he gets himself sorted out. And aside from the public safety standpoint, he’s been making a good name for himself in the community of fans in and around Cincinnati. He should be careful about pissing that away.

I saw him at Panda once...

…passed out on the table in front of me. This isn’t surprising at all. :(

I hope he fixes it because he may not be so lucky next time. That would be tragic.

Alcoholism has a long recovery road

Cessation of drunk driving has a quicker fix: get a freakin driver. With you on the take no prisoners.

That's too simple

Straightforward, easy to implement, and affordable for the newly wealthy young NFL player. What kind of crazy ideas are you peddling anyway?

What's up, DCT!

Not sure where you live in DC, but I just moved from Chinatown to Alexandria (first time in the burbs) and I’m now a metro and a bus away from the city. And I can still find a freakin cab. I’m scared of it, tho. If I have to drive to get to my party, it’s a totally different drinking night (read: nervous and very low volume).

Thanks for taking Seantrel outta the Big Ten.
