BREAKING: [UPDATED It is OFFICIAL] ESPN Reporting Lane Kiffin to be Named USC Head Coach
UPDATE II:
Here is Garrett's Statement...
"We are really excited to welcome Lane Kiffin back to USC,” said Garrett. “I was able to watch him closely when he was an assistant with us and what I saw was a bright, creative young coach who I thought would make an excellent head coach here if the opportunity ever arose. I’m confident he and his staff will keep USC football performing at the high level that we expect.
“Lane brings a lot to the table. He has a coaching background both in the pros and in the best collegiate conferences. He has a great command of the X’s and O’s. He is familiar with the Trojan landscape and will be a great representative of our university. He keeps the game fun. And, very importantly, he has proven to be one of the finest recruiters anywhere.
“Lane has surrounded himself with others of similar talent. I can’t tell you how delighted we are to have Ed Orgeron back on staff and to have Monte Kiffin join us. They are some of the pre-eminent coaches in the game. Ed did a marvelous job during his previous time at USC and we all know that Monte is a defensive guru. I know Lane will fill out his staff with other outstanding assistants like them, ones who Trojan players and fans will really like.”
It is also rumored that Coach O is already in LA with Brennan Carroll.
Anybody else see Pete's fingerprints on this?
On ESPN News right now...
That is all I have right now
UPDATE:
Here is the official release from USC
Lane Kiffin, the one-time USC offensive coordinator who then became the head coach of the Oakland Raiders and at Tennessee, has been named the Trojans' head football coach, USC athletic director Mike Garrett announced today.
Joining Kiffin's staff as assistants will be Ed Orgeron and Monte Kiffin. Both were on the Tennessee staff in 2009 with Kiffin.
Orgeron, one of college football's top recruiters and defensive line coaches, previously served seven seasons at USC before becoming Mississippi's head coach and then an assistant with the New Orleans Saints. Monte Kiffin, Lane's father, is a longtime NFL and collegiate coach known for his defensive prowess.
"We are really excited to welcome Lane Kiffin back to USC," Garrett said. "I was able to watch him closely when he was an assistant with us and what I saw was a bright, creative young coach who I thought would make an excellent head coach here if the opportunity ever arose. I'm confident he and his staff will keep USC football performing at the high level that we expect.
I am speechless...
I need to let this sink in.

The NCAA has shown recently
That they don’t care about punishing the person who did the wrong doing, only the team that it occured on (I’m looking at you college basketball).
USC knows what the sanctions are so lane knows too, I wouls say it is 5-8 rides.
Fine the nearest cliff Mike Garret and put your car in Drive and step on the peddle.

"So I want everybody to think here for a second, how much does this game mean to you? 'Cause if it means something to you, you can't stand still. You understand? You play fast! You play strong! You go out there and dominate the man you're playing against, and you make his ass quit! That's our trademark! That's our M.O.... as a team! That's what people know us as!" - Coach Nick Saban before the 2008 LSU game.

There are a like with this hire
Most of all he know his way around USC. I suspect it will be very much business as usual for the players.
It will be interesting to see how Monte is used.
I DIDN'T DEAR SPEAK ABOUT THIS DREAM BUT HERE IT IS!

My gut reaction
Is that this is an awesome hire – especially with everybody coming on board. Actually, contingent upon everyone else coming with him, but still….we could at least maintain a status quo 8-9 wins next year and go up from there. It’s almost a similar situation coming to SC as when he went to UT last year (following a legend at the school who left under less than desirable circumstances), except there were only a few gems still at Tennessee – we’ve got plenty of talent already in house to build around (and a recruiting class that will continue that level of talent, if Kiffin can hold ’em all together).
you know...
this sounds exactly like what vols fans were saying a year ago. exactly.
you might want to see what they are saying right now.
Roll 'Bama Roll: The Champagne of 'Bama Blogs.
Seems like they’re more dissapointed with the lack of continuity in their program. Which I would be too.
Also, there were definitely some dissapointing moments for Tennessee this year (loss to UCLA), but some very promising moments as well (close loss to Florida, should have won vs. ’Bama).
It doesn’t quite sit right with the NCAA situation, but we’ll have to wait until Feb. to see how that plays out. For right now, it certainly seems like a good thing.
Now if we’re put under probation and a strict, watchful eye, then Lane will have to learn to behave himself very quickly.
well, as a bama fan who lived through the rough years
i urge you to look rather closely at how well it turned out at A&M with franchione before pronouncing this a glorious new era.
Roll 'Bama Roll: The Champagne of 'Bama Blogs.
Haha, there’s no proclamation of a glorious era here. I don’t believe that Kiffin will have anywhere near the success that Pete had – that would be virtually impossible. What he is good for, however, is sustaining our talent level and keeping us on the brink of break through with being in contention for a BCS bowl every year. I don’t think there’s any chance that anyone following Pete would be capable of being a long term hire for SC, and Kiffin will want to jump to the NFL sooner or later – in all likelihood, SC will have a different head coach 5 years from now, but as long as we don’t dip into mediocrity and Kiffin keeps us in contention and the talent level high, then the long term health of the program will benefit (assuming he doesn’t go and get us the death penalty).
Kiffen has arguably the best assistant coaches around him
This will be a bright era, very bright

well, best of luck with it...
but don’t be upset when i come back to say “i told you so.”
Roll 'Bama Roll: The Champagne of 'Bama Blogs.
I'll be waiting for it
Enjoy the domination of the SEC next year.
Saying that I told you so
What does that exactly mean. You’re not exactly going out on a limb saying that Kiffin won’t be as successful as Carroll. I would have serious doubts if anyone will reach that plateau. If Kiffin has half of the success, I will be happy.
Haha....
Speechless. Didn’t see this coming for a mile.
Question
Who would you take, Cromwell or Barkley?

Then again....
It’s pretty funny b/c a lot of people wanted him outta here (myself included, not gonna lie) but I’m honestly still shocked. So many thoughts going into my head. He’s not exactly the most clean cut guy.
DO YOU GUYS UNDERSTAND WHAT THIS MEANS TO RECRUITING?
Not only will he cement this year’s class, he’s going to steal a few guys from Tenn. and stock the defense with monster players from SEC land. Maybe Beano wasn’t so crazy after all!

Regardless of what you think about Lane
This sure doesn’t help to optics of hiring a guy whose not going to invite NCAA scrutiny. I’ll reserve my comments for elsewhere, but needless to say, Lane Kiffin doesn’t strike me as an overwhelming hire.
Certainly the staff will help save some of the recruiting class this year, which I’m sure is something that was top of the administration’s mind.
Dude
The only programs that don’t attract NCAA attention are also rans.

by Locoweed 1.1 on Jan 12, 2010 6:17 PM PST up reply actions
Well, Kiffin is going to attract a *lot* of attention
His prime recruit that he ‘stole’ from Florida – and then proceeded to brag about in front of the SEC coaches during media day – was arrested and later convicted of armed robbery. He had numerous secondary violations over the summer; and to be perfectly honest, secondary violations occur everywhere but you only really get busted for them if you start pissing off other coaches, which Lane was very good at doing.
In addition to inviting the fire-breathing rhetoric and finger-pointing on violations from every other schools in the Pac-10, the SEC and its member schools will likely do everything in their power to undermine Lane at USC. So not only will the compliance office at USC have to worry about Pac-10 schools prattling on about them, but I can guarantee them it will have to keep an extra eye on SEC teams, as well.
If you thought the SEC hated USC before, just wait about three days.
Why the hell would anyone worry about the SEC here?

Well, considering you were the first person to comment on RTT's thread re: Lane
I’d say you at least pay it a passing interest.

InsideSC
You should see the shit hitting the fan over there, the first 3 comments were from trolls, I didn’t read them all, but I’m going to guess that 85 to 90% are against the hire.
From a practical standpoint
Ed Orgeron is already in LA and reportedly started working recruiting with Brennan Carroll.

Kiffin is a solid hire and the package deal of Monte and Coach O thrown in as well, makes me very very happy.

Re: Pete's fingerprints
If he did indeed play a role in orchestrating this, then it was as good of a send off gift as he could have given.
However, with the development that Chow is back, it seems a little doubtful that he played a significant role in pushing this through.
It almost feels like MG or others in the athletic dept. said “shit, everyone turned us down….how do we get back to the 2004 type of team? Bring in as many of those coaches as we can”
