USC 27 - WSU 6
OK...
Discuss the win. Very ugly with all the penalties. Barkley looked pretty good. The defense looked pretty though the prevent defense that SC went to with the second teamers was a bit of a bummer.
If Barkley looked this good while still being injured it will be interesting to see just how good he is when he is fully healthy.
Anyway...lots to discuss. You could tell Pete is not happy with the penalties (again, so much for a special teams coach) and the ball control issues continue to be an issue.

Not terribly encouraging
There was a lot about this game that suggested that the team could be really really good, but then the first quarter ended and it was back on the defense.
No win situation
run it up and we look like assholes. play down to the Cougs and everyone will say we have issues. we do have issues i.e. lots of bad penalties.
But Barkley looked pretty good for supposedly being injured…
I am thinking them as stupid ones over there
They seem to complain about every little thing they can think of strange people.

Back from the game
Overall a decent outing for the offense and a better than the numbers performance for Barkley. The number of balls dropped by our butterfingered receivers was disappointing and several long gains were wiped because of stupid penalties called by the flag-happy zebras; lets just say Barkley really threw >300 yards and should have had three TD passes.
This is The Kid’s team, he’s got leader and NFL written all over him and is doing everything he can to get the offense going, including blocking for Chauncey, err… Stafon.
Which brings us to the running game. Viewed in person it looks like the only NFL RB we have is Bradford, and we may soon see the re-emergence of Gable.
Yeah, I thought that it was interesting that Gable and Travon Patterson made a dramatic reappearance. Those 2 pitch plays to Gable when SC was inside the WSU 5 yard line were a bit of a head-scratcher though. It’s not like the WSU defense was so slow that we needed to spot them over 5 yards from the line of scrimmage while getting the play going.
Yes, Stafon = Chauncey
Not really a slam, as Chauncey was very solid. Just unspectacular. I hate to say it, but I hope CJG transfers. The kid is a star player who is inexplicably being muzzled in the PC doghouse.
Funny Thing is that James Boyd might be a better QB than AC or MM
280-of-450 passes (62.2 percent) for state bests of 4,266 yards and 44 TDs. In one game, the threw for 575 yards and eight touchdowns.

My take...
Positives:
+ Barkley does have an NFL arm and composure; very nice to see him use it
+ Good defense, just a small grade down from last season’s spectacular defense
+ Highlight play for me was actually Rhett Ellison’s dropped TD of a Barkley pass; Barkley threw the pass with incredible velocity off his back foot; what an arm
Negatives:
- No improvement from last week, just opened up the playbook a bit
- Poor third down conversions – 3 of 9
- Poor ball handling
- Inconsistent passing game, no #2 receiver emerging
- Lots of penalties
- Special teams miscues
- Only scored 27 points against a team giving up an avg of 35 points/gm
- Only had 405 yards of offense against a team giving up an avg of 577 yards/gm
- Lowlight, too many to pick just one
No Kool-aid to drink. This team continues to struggle big-time offensively. I question our offensive philosophy and system and PC’s influence over it. Could it be that the pro-style offense demands much more technical expertise and execution than a more open west coast/spread offense? We do not exploit mismatches and leverage our immense player talent on offense. I don’t think our system takes advantage of our athleticism, and it lacks creativity and the element of surprise.
With 4 tough road games ahead, we’ll be lucky to go 2-2. The positive is that we should not play another ranked team this season due to the dismal Pac-10. SC will likely lose another 2-3 games this season, but still has a shot at the Rose Bowl due to the weak conference. The Holiday Bowl is more likely, however. PC’s streak of never losing a game by double digits is in serious jeopardy.
Barkley will get us back in a BCS game in……2011/2012. PC needs to take a serious look at changing his offensive philosophy this off-season for USC to fulfill our potential given our talent. We are underachieving.
we will win all
