Play Calling is Overrated...
As I watch the message boards burst into flames I am seeing a recurring theme...
The play calling was way too conservative
Well, consider the hand that the coaching staff was dealt. They moved the ball with ease in the first quarter until Sarkisian adjusted (what does that tell you?) taking out the one thing I said was going to be key...running the ball. Sark knew Corp couldn't throw it and so did Carroll & Bates.
SC's offense became very one dimensional and we saw the results...
Yes, I have some questions as to why we didn't see any roll-outs, bootlegs or QB draws...all the things that Corp should have been able to take advantage of because of his mobility but it never happened.
Why?
Well, I think once it was determined that Corp was shell shocked out there The coaching staff tried to make it as simple as possible for him to run the offense we saw how that went...
It doesn't matter what you have in your playbook...If the QB can't run what the coaches have schemed then you have to simplify it...but Corp couldn't even do that. Coaches have to adjust as the game progresses and they did the best they could when they determined that Corp was making the wrong reads and was too afraid of his own shadow to chuck it down the field.
Play calling is overrated...you need to take control of the game right out of the blocks. SC did that but Corp didn't respond when Sarkisian adjusted and stacked the box...

Havery Hyde is going on about this issue
But you are right. Aaron Corp is not qualified to run the offense.
I’m sick of discussing Corp’s ineptitude.
The biggest absurdity it that canard about AC’s deflated self-esteem at the hands of that heartless Barkley loving Caesar. Truly nauseating…

No kidding
Apparently, if Pete just would have provided the enough esteem building, Corp would morph into Joe Montana, instead of looking like Bambi.
Check out this gem from the Wolfbag
Maybe this joewillie is AC’s daddy.

IMO, Caesar was biased in not letting Corp compete against Barkley in 9 days before SJSU game to see who should start. Caesar robbed Corp of competing.
It is critical that the offense and team mobilize around the QB during the week before the game, even the day of the game.
Caesar and Bates and staff have been playing mind games with Corp.
End of Spring camp: You are #1 QB.
Start of Fall camp: You are #1 QB.
Until Injury: You are #1 QB.
While Injured: Get better Aaron … meanwhile … reps for Mustain disappear, Barkley gets reps for #1 and most for #2 position … then, “Aaron, I am gonna think like your Dad … so I will name Matt the #1 QB in advance of scrimmage where I could have opportunity to evaluate you and Matt and then make a decision … I don’t want you to get hurt playing Aaron so I must decide now… but, I will let you play anyway in the scrimmage …”
Huh???
“By the way Aaron, this decision is not just for SJSU, it’s for more than one game :)”
Huh???
The mind games continued last week ….
“For the first time in the Carroll era, the quarterbacks were not told who would start. Ever.
“They never really did (tell me),” sophomore Aaron Corp said. That was confirmed by quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates, who said, “I didn’t think it was really a big deal.”
Oh really Jeremy … you have Robots as QBs and it makes no difference to them mentally in their preparation as to whether they are starting the first game of their life or not … especially when you’ve pulled the rug out from under one of them and showed zero confidence in one of them
Apparently, it was a bigger deal for mighty San Jose State when Carroll named Matt Barkley the starter nine days before that game."
Caesar and Co., you sure look out for the psyche of your players …
You went even one step further by calling plays the played to the strength of Corp, plenty of roll-outs … right? Not …
I hope Corp is not out of the picture … give him a gameplan that is suited to his strengths and a coaching staff that supports him and does not throw him under a bus, before, during, and after a game!
Just mindboggling…

Where is Vidal, I mean, CJ?
Here are my gripes:
1) CJ Gable is inexplicably in the doghouse. CJ has the most starts among the RBs, 15 career TDs, and has been called by our coaches as the best all-around back. Despite averaging + 25 yds per KO return and being in the top 10 on our all-time KO return list, he has also been replaced on KO returns. I count at least 16 plays for +20 yard gains from CJG who is a dual threat as a great receiving back. Anyone remember this critical play in a tight game on the road:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yw-SJZQFuHs
Joe McFumbles is dangerous, yet averages 1 fumble per game. To all the Stafon-lovers, it is time to admit that he is our current version of Chauncey Washington – tough inside runner with limited break away potential, frequently missed holes, scores easy garbage TDs with the occasional long, untouched run. Our running success was greatly exaggerated by long McFumbles runs against OSU and UW. The truth is that the running game has been extremely inconsistent as clearly evidenced by our 3rd down conversion, or lack thereof, rate.
WHY IS CJG IN THE DOGHOUSE?
2) The CJG situation is eerily familiar to the Vidal Hazelton situation last season. Vidal had 50 receptions as a soph in 2007. Yet, was injured and benched inexplicably by the coaches in 2008. Anyone remember this play by Vidal against Notre Dame:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymfbrjf7e5k
Vidal was ahead of a young Rojo on the depth chart. So, why was Vidal basically run out of the program? Let’s face it, David Ausberry is simply not a very good football player. With secondaries focused on Damian and RoJo injured, how valuable would it be to have a good #2 receiver playing?
Why was Vidal run out of the program and why is CJG currently being run out of the program? It certain can’t be talent-level or merit-based. CJG is even listed as a co-starter on the depth chart, yet has 0 rushes in the last 2 games.
Would USC’s struggling offense be much better with Vidal and CJ seeing significant time right now? Is the coaching staff so arrogant to think that they can coach us to wins without our best players on the field by playing favorites and riding a wave of megalomaniacal grandeur? Pete’s arrogance has hurt the program!
I hope CJG announces his transfer this week. PC believes that he is more important than the players on the field. Clearly, we need to play our best players to win. PC’s merit-based competition theme is a joke and a sham.
Puleeze, Paragon
In a day of stupid posts, DFW, as usual, wins.
“Pete’s arrogance is hurting the program.” Pete is the program, stupid.
Nothing worse than ignorant bandwagoners.
But what should I expect who called Tim Floyd an honorable man and predicted a final four birth for the 2009-10 season.
Sorry, Paragon, I understand that you don’t like commenters insulting each other, and everyone is entitled to their opinion, but not every opinion should be respected, and someone should speak truth to stupid.
Which is why I want it as a fan post
I want anything that gets the conversation going to get its just do…not lost in the comments….I have asked you to do it as well.
You still haven’t…
You’re right, I don’t like commenters insulting each other but to everyone’s opinion is important…right or wrong good or bad whether or not you or I agree with it…
Dummy Douchey Desmo....
regales us with more keen insight. Des, your football knowledge doesn’t come close to matching your unimpressive basketball knowledge. Maybe you should stick to hoops, junior.
Coaching arrogance that leads to playing favorites with players not based on merit and inflexible game strategy philosophies has hurt our team. Go help Louis Johnson finish his book, you tool. You’re as much Trojan as Slick Neu-weasel.
DFW look there are a lot of players on this team and Pete is the coach, you got respect that.
At least USC isn’t as bad as other programs and $hit happens. Desmo is just that Desmo but he still believes in the program, I wish you guys could get along. Look at it this way at least most of the board still has its health and I don’t think we should become a BN type.

More Trojan that you
And I’ve got two degrees hanging on my wall to prove it.
Funny how you know so much about the program sitting behind your keyboard in Texas.
You know NOTHING!
I agree with DFWTrojan
You are so on point DFWTrojan. Pete Carroll is way out there. Vidal Hazelton was by far the best receiver USC had. Pete is taking the program down. Vidal made the right choice to move on. Word is that recruits like Kyle Prater is looking at decommitting from USC and looking at schools like Texas Tech and Cincinnati BearCats with a spread offense. They actually feature the WR more in this type of offense. USC also blocked Vidal from attending Notre Dame and any other PAC 10 School but allowed Coach Sark to accept a job at Washington. If these programs are so all about the kids. Then why the double standard for coaches and student athletes. I guess Sark is better friends with Coach Sark and Vidal Hazelton represents more of a threat to USC? Yeah right Pete. You are definitely full of it. What happened to competition? I see coach Norton exiting as well. He is an honorable man. Hang in there CJ Gable. Yes that was an amazing run by Vidal against Notre Dame with the throw from Mark Sanchez. Keep your head up VH. The scouts are watching you kid.

I did but it says nothing, but I didn't read his past post.
How stupid is the remark about blocking Sark and holt you can’t do that, if it is VHs dad he was part of the problem. You know one thing I really liked about my parents is that they never interfered with my sports, they felt it was my thing not theirs. To top it off my dad was even a coach in my early baseball years, but he knew why I wasn’t playing it was because I sucked. But unlike Corp I went out and worked on my weak points and got to be very good.

Eh.
You lost the game because of 3 turnovers from inside the 30. Kick one field goal and you win (because you would have been able to run out the clock on the last possession). Don’t overreact here.
People like to predict seasons and still I can't do this, for being a competitor I have won and lost.
But the worst thing I ever did was count my chickens before they hatch, but nicely I learn from that. Get over it next week is a new game and thats what the team has to concentrate on period if you want a new coach than apply for the job. Natinal Championship what does that prove or do, does it make the economy get better I think not. Does it cure cancer that has taken so many lives (including my mom) no, does it stop the war no. So next week there will be another FB game to entertain us all lets just hope it ends up better, and you got to give PROPs to the Huskies.

Agreed. All I really ever want to see is the team giving it their best effort, which is why I was a bit bamboozled by McKnight’s comment last night. Full points for honesty, but perhaps the time to have that insight and act on it was while the clock was running.
what did he say

How I feel about the loss
Washington is vastly improved. Our offense is without an experienced QB. That includes Barkley. Our 3rd down conversions are terrible with Corp’s one game, and Barkley at Ohio State wasn’t much better.
I now understand why Pete was so angry with Sanchez for leaving early. I don’t think that he felt comfortable handing the offense to Corp or Mustain, so he went with the long term project.
So now I will dare say that since we have a freshman QB, this quite possible could be the first rebuilding year we have had since 2001. We may not win the Pac 10 this year, but we will go to a bowl. This is the first year that I really don’t know if we are going to a BCS bowl or not. I’m ok if we have a down year. I know a lot of folks will be disappointed. I think we need to be realistic and not expect too much from Barkley.
Tempered Expectations Are Needed
I was at the game and the Huskies played hard, real hard. Locker is a stud, Polk is good, and their receivers played very well. Yet, our defense and O-lines had the game totally under control. We had let the air out of the stadium in the 1st quarter and should have beaten UW by 30 points. Nothing hurst worse than a really sloppy, yet successful, effort of beating ourselves.
We lost?
Well, now that’s a big fat bummer!
I love the fact that Conquest Chronicles has SOME OF THE BEST “Sun/Mon Quarterbacks” on SB Nation. (no harm, no foul SMQ/Matt?). But, c’mon now fellas? The slinging of nasty words towards each other over who knows what and more about our football team is a bit . . . . .as SoCal has stated: too much like Muscrat over at Bruins Nation. Now that it’s already been “slung” I hope everybody feels much better to keep it in check moving forward.
We lost? Okay we lost. If anything, I’m glad we lost to Sark and Holt. There’s a very good reason we lost- they’re two of the best coaches we’ve ever had under the Pete Carroll, they know Corp, they know Rocky. (btw: Rocky and Carroll coached a great game). Now Bates? And Carroll? I’m not so sure about the decision to let Corp try to win this game, I think it was a major mistake and had he been pulled out in the 3rd qtr- and given way to Mustain or Green- Holt would have had to adjust once more. Had Mustain or Green moved us down field with their passing, we prolly would have scored SOMETHING. Thereby making the game more to our liking, as I like our chances with having Sark needing to adjust and watch as Carroll coached us to victory. (there’s a lot of what if’s and had’s in there, I know- but indulge me. Please.)
Is there any way possible to have Carroll on the “hot seat”. He blew that game, he knows he did and I am definitely in that camp. He’s got to do better and stop reading his press clippings. He’s managing too much of the program right now as it is. He needs to delegate more on what the individual assistant coaches are paid to do, make better adjustments/decisions during game time (talking mostly about personnel) AND NOT GIVE A FUCK ABOUT WHAT THE MEDIA AND FANS are saying in the press. He’s got to become a better “coach”, is all.

[post script]
I realize I initially wrote that Carroll coached a great game and then later wrote he also blew the game. To clarify, Carroll coached a great “defensive” scheme, along with Rocky- as far as just the defense is concerned.
Carroll coached this game and blew it, by not making the executive decision in removing Corp, inserting a back-up, and not rotating the TE’s, RB’s, and defensive secondary. It’s Carroll’s job to over-ride an assistant with regards to personnel on the field of play. Carroll managed horribly in that regard, same as he did vs. Stanford, same as he did vs. fUcla. The OSU game was just a bad first half game and the D-line couldn’t put a hand on Rogers.
Carroll good as DC
Carroll bad as HC
