Comparisons between Barkley and Corp
So, I think it is fair to say that yesterday's performance that USC's offense is somewhat anemic.
We can dissect it all we want but it won't change a thing.
But you cannot compare Barkley to Corp or vice versa...
Although Corp will be the focus of criticism, the reality is USC's passing game did not do much better against Ohio State. Barkley was 11 for 25 before the final drive in Columbus and the Trojans have not converted third downs no matter who plays quarterback.
Well yeah...that is obvious.
But Corp has been in the system for 3 years Barkley 9 months. I stand by my remarks that Pete Carroll saw something that gave him pause on naming Corp the starter early in the week. It is clear he wants Barkley. The question is where will Corp end up on depth chart? That was a terrible performance...the worst in the Pete Carroll era and it could have serious repercussions.
Barkley will continue to grow and hopefully become what we expect him to be...Corp on the other hand is a big question mark. He did not answer the bell when he was called and we saw the results of it yesterday.

Alternatively
This is an indictment of Ohio State’s playcalling more concrete than the Smart Football vivisection of Tressel’s game plan: we were almost as crap against last year’s Big 10 runner up as we were against last year’s Pac 10 holder of the wooden spoon, but Washington managed to turn that into a win.
Sleep tight, Columbus!

From the WeAreSC Boards
Talked to Tuiasosopo after the game I was with him in the coaches tent after the game, and asked him about Corp and how quickly they realized he wasn’t throwing well or a real threat.
He said “Oh, yeah, it was wet and he has small hands. He wasn’t going to hurt us.”
Never heard that before but then I doubt Scott Wolf or Chris Dufrense or the yell leaders running the WeAreSC board are ever going to notice something like that. It’s something only coaches and people with very discerning eyes would notice.
I also read another comment that bad two points: 1.) Aaron corp was successful in HS running the veer option, and 2.) it’s Pete fault for not installing the option, either last week, or permanently, since everyone except a few West Coast schools are running the spread option.
First, dismiss the first part of 2.). College offenses are established during recruiting, to get the players you want to run your scheme, and spring ball, to teach the offense and establish assignments and roles. You don’t re-install offenses mid-season.
But 1.) and the second part of 2.) make interesting points. First, Aaron’s Corp’s success was within a veer option offense. Carson, Matt, JDB and Mark all played in passing offenses high school. Unless a recruit is an off the charts physical stud (VY, Pryor, Tebow) I think Corp will be PC’s last recruit from a veer/spread option offense.
The second point is interesting. The pro-style passing offense is becoming rarer and rarer in high school. Southern California is about the last place where it is still used with any frequency. Eventually, the talent well is going to dry up. Carson, Matt and Mark were taught the fundamentals of a pro-style offense in high school, SC just polished them and got them ready for the NFL. JDB played in a shotgun style offense, but he flung the ball, threw for over 8000 yards in 800 attempts in about two years. Corp, on the other hand, ran for over 1000 yds his senior year.
SC has been very fortunate attracting QB’s with NFL bodies and schooled in pro-style fundamentals. Eventually, SC is going to run out of Carson’s and Mark’s and Barkey’s and they are going to be stuck with Aaron Corp types: lanky option QB’s with weak arms who might win you a few games in college but with absolutely no hope of ever sniffing a practice squad in the NFL. And that may be when Pete finally retires.

I'm not sure what Scroggins runs
But apparently he was off the charts at one of the camps.
Also people forget that Corp was offered (and accepted quickly) b/c JDB was coming off back surgery, Clausen committed to ND and Mark was just arrested. There was a fear that Mark would be gone from the program.
I remember when Corp entered his senior year he was a mid-level, two or three star recruit. When SC offered, he was bumped to a four star and finished as a five star. There is a lot of revisionist history regarding Corp, but until SC offered, he was a mid-level recruit and probably WAC/MWC bound.

I live in the area and I was surprised that Corp was pick by USC, Orange lutheran has never impressed me.
But as always I feel Pete knows what he wants, so go figure?

Pro-style Disappearing?
Couldn’t be more wrong, Desperate Dessie. Do you sit around at night and make this stuff up? The pro-style offense is quite prevalent in TX, OK, FL, OH. The spread, and derivatives thereof, while growing, is still primarily used by schools with smaller players to leverage speed for their advantage.
SoCal and America running out of pro-style QBs? Is the NFL in trouble too, you moron?

Nope
Again, asshole, your stupidity is monumental.
Texas, UofO, Florida and Ohio State do not run pro-style offenses, they use spreads, and variations of the spread: From the shotgun, empty or single back …, aw, screw it, I’ve got better things to do than argue with retards.
BTW: Are you coming to a game in LA? I would LOVE to meet you. Paragon knows how to get in touch with me.
Bitch. :)

How bad must Mustain be to not get in even when it was obvious Corp was in over his head?
…
At USC we're not snobs, we're just better than you.

Looks like Corp is the Rusty Lisch of USC
A great practice player who beat out Joe Montana for the starting job but disappeared in games.

You are insulting Lisch. As a senior, the guy actually won 7 games at Notre Dame and was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 4th round. What are the chances AC reaches such heights?

Why all the hate for Corp?
As the original article said, his stats were no worse than Barkley’s. And he didn’t put the ball on the ground twice killing drives. Why aren’t we calling out McKnight and Havili, aren’t those the guys that killed us?
by jhludwig on Sep 20, 2009 4:54 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Nobody hates Corp
but that was an ugly performance.
McKnight did put it on the ground but he also had a lot to do with SC even having a shot in this game. As for Havili…He put the ball on the turf trying to make a play to gain the extra yards that Corp should have thrown for on that play…
Call it cause and effect….
