Does the Big Ten "need" Ohio State to beat USC?
With all of the agony surrounding the Big Ten from the media over the past couple seasons it would seem that a victory by Ohio State this weekend against USC would be critical. But does the conference need this win?
According to the recent round table discussion among Big Ten writers on Examiner, the answer is yes. But there is a belief that the more important wins for the conference will come not in September with OSU-USC, Michigan-Notre Dame, or Purdue-Oregon, but in January when bowl season comes around.
What are your thoughts on the Big Ten needing Ohio State to beat USC?

This game is important but only part of the picture
If the Big 10 were to come back and win the Rose Bowl this year then that would supersede this game in the national perception.

Only if its against USC in the Rose Bowl. Anyone else would be * material
Does the Big Ten need Ohio State to beat USC?
As a long time Trojan fan, I don’t see great gains for the Big Ten in status if the Buckeyes defeat USC. More likey, a similar situation starts developing, reputation wise, as has with USC and the Pac Ten, ie. “there’s USC and then there’s the Pac Ten” .
The truth is, there is no great conferences anymore. There are still elite programs, the Buckeyes included, but even the SEC has teams that the Elite Programs would defeat handily.
I’m not saying the SEC isn’t the best/least worst conference, just saying there is no great conferences anymore. Defeating SC may give some backdoor pride to the Big Ten, but as a west coast person, it wouldn’t change my perception of the Big Ten being weak one bit.
It would, however, change my perception of the Buckeyes. My respect would go up, not that I disrespect them, its just combined with recent trends AND being the first Big Ten team to defeat Pete Carroll ,brings some serious bragging rights with it- no SEC team has beaten Pete Carroll either.
No its just another really interesting game, Ohio ST. will still be Ohio St..SC will still be SC either way, so lets enjoy this match-up, its gonna be fun, its what college football is all about.
