Jennifer Song: Champion for The Ages!
USC golfer and 2009 Pac-10 Freshman Women's Golfer of the Year, Jennifer Song, became only the second woman to win the Women’s Amateur and the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links (WAPL) titles in the same year. The last person to accomplish such a feat was Pearl Sinn, who won both USGA trophies in 1988.
Prior to playing in the championship round yesterday, Jennifer said, "I am so excited, being given this chance to play in the finals is just a great honor for me." And "play", she did. The hard way! She earned a 3-and-1 win over Jennifer Johnson, of La Quinta, CA. In doing so, the 19-year-old Song- who's from Ann Arbor, MI (thank you Wolverine-country) had to come from behind to capture the 109th U.S. Women's Amateur title.
Jennifer trailed 4-down to Johnson after the first 10 holes of Sunday’s 36-hole finals, but the University of Southern California incoming-sophomore stayed positive, if only from some encouragement from, Museok- her father. Oh, AND caddie for this championship match."My dad kept telling me, ‘Jennifer, you’re going to win. You’re a great player, and throughout the whole round he kept me in a positive mind." If Museok kept her mind in it, Jennifer realized his words and started to take apart the Old Warson Country Club in St. Louis, MO. Jennifer then commenced to birdie the 11th and 12th holes for wins and evened the match on the 18th when Johnson three-putted. This proud Trojan golfer and WAPL winner was deadly in the afternoon round. When she birdied the 19th for a 1-up lead, Johnson trailed for the first time in 95 holes. And Jennifer Johnson is no slouch! The 18-year-old Johnson is a soon to be/incoming freshman at Arizona State and is destined for NCAA and US pro greatness. A birdie at the next hole and a Johnson bogey at the 27th gave Song a 3-up edge. And then, the drama was only just beginning. Johnson captured three of the next four holes to square the match, only to watch Jennifer take the lead again with a seven-foot par putt on the 33rd. Jennifer then drained a six-footer on the 34th for a 2-up advantage that had "NAIL-BITER" written all over it, and closed out the match when Johnson failed to get up and down from a green-side bunker on the par-3 35th.
To say this was an emotional win for Jennifer would be an understatement. The burden and stress of coming into the match because of her recent success on the college year and amateur circuit, prevented her mother (due to illness) to attend Jennifer's win at her WAPL triumph at Red Tail Golf Club, in Devens, MA back in June. Here in St. Louis, with her dad by her side on the fairways and her mother in the gallery, Jennifer enjoyed this hard-fought victory with both parents presiding over their prodigy child.
"It’s been a while since she’s seen me win and really hold on to the trophy and smile," Song told the USGA after tearfully hugging her mother. "When I hugged my dad at the end, my tears weren’t out yet, but when I saw mom, you know that feeling when you see your mom. It’s your mom, so you just cry."

For those who haven't followed her Trojan coming out year, Jennifer Song was honored as Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, by outgoing PAC 10 Commissioner Tom Hansen back on May 26 of this year.
Fellow teammate Lizette Salas won Pac-10 Player of the Year, and it was Salas who spent much of the season as the top-ranked golfer while being tabbed an NGCA All-American first team-er. Salas finished the season ranked fourth in the nation according to Golfweek. But the Trojans season wouldn't have seen as much success were it not for the play of Jennifer Song. Jennifer finished the season as the No. 1 ranked player in the nation according to Golfweek, led the nation with her 71.55 stroke average, setting a Trojan record by more than half a stroke. In addition, the Ann Arbor Mich., native who currently resides in Deajon, Korea but attends USC, was recognized as an NGCA All-American first teamer, as well as winning the NGCA Freshman of the Year accolade. Song led the field heading into the final hole at the 2009 NCAA Women's Golf Championships before finishing one shot out of second place. Jennifer Song also finished second at the 2009 Pac-10 Championships and the 2009 NCAA West Regional. On the season, Jennifer carded five second-place finishes in 10 starts for USC and led USC with seven rounds in the 60s.
Way to go Jennifer! I'm sure I speak for everybody in the USC Trojan family in saying how proud you have all made us. Your success on the links brings tears of joy to all our eyes.
Fight On!

I bought a set of clubs 5 years ago
For the first time!
The set of clubs my dad gave me when I was 14, were these crazy; way too big for me clubs and. . . .get this?. . . .he said the catch was, “I want the golf bag, though. Find your own. You’ve got a week.”
Background to this story: I’m a huge A’s fan, he also gave me a Giants helmet he picked up when he took my brother to a “Free Helmet” day at The ’Stick which I refused to attend. So: 1. I got hand me down clubs, and had to buy my own golf bag. 2. I got a helmet he prolly found on the ground leaving a Giants game 2 months prior. (boy! he really broke the bank, eh?)
I mowed 7 lawns over two weeks and got paid $15 for fishing over 60 “almost new” golf balls out of Pasatiempo Golf Clubs’ creeks. Took me 2 weeks though. And this was a good thing, lemme tell you.
The god-awful golf bag my dad wanted to keep? I kid you not, it is this ginormous bag that could fit 2 SETS OF CLUBS if you packed-em right and . . . .it’s made of 100% thick-ass leather with this weird Aztec scene of a sacrificial ritual embossed or branded AND painted into it. Ever see those “free” Mexican calendars that have some virgin being sacrificed on an altar or what not? That’s this golf bag. Atrocious! (for what it’s worth: I’m Chilean- my dad is too. My whole family was born there, we moved to the States when I was a child. However, my dad (electrical engineer Caltech 1958) got his Master’s in Latin-American poetry at Berkeley when just after his 47 birthday. He loves Mexican culture and cuisine. Total epicure of all things Mexican. True story.
I hate golf, . . . . .but love it just as much!
Jennifer Song is as good, if not better than Michelle Wie
Comer4tide to Nico2.0: "How come I've never heard of any of your random songs?"
Todd to Comer: "Because if you had, he wouldn't listen to it. BOOM. Roasted."
Nico to Todd: "Shouldn't you be off voguing somewhere?"

Golf is like Tennis you got to able to improvise at any given time.
If you can’t play it at least 2-3 times a week you might as well accept the 90-105 scores. I look at it this way the strokes I have I am getting a better buy on course rate.
