Did Reggie Carter really say that?

ucla's Reggie Carter thinks ucla will have the best defense in the Pac-10.

"They say defense wins championships," Carter said Thursday at Pac-10 football media day. "We really have the best defense in the Pac 10. If defense wins championships, we will have the best defense. If the offense can just hold onto the ball, there is no reason we shouldn't compete for a Pac-10 championship."

Really?

Frak noted some of Carter's delusions of grandeur already.

Don't you have to score to win?

I do think ucla has pretty good defense but lets not get carried away. It will be hard to say if they are best defense in the conference if the offense can't score and keeps the defense on the field for a majority of the game. The more you are on the field the more tired you get...and that is where mistakes get made.

I mean come on, everybody knows that. These guys are not superman!

There is little to no chance that ucla will break the upper half of the conference this season especially with another new QB and an incomplete offensive line. Oh sure, they are better, they added some nice pieces to their OL but they will take time to develop (BTW they could only go one way...UP!), but not conference champion better.

They should improve overall but to me it will be interesting to see just how good the defense will be with a new DC. They have talent but can they be coached up to the next level. They haven't yet built a pedigree to make that kind of statement.

The monopoly is apparently over...but only in their heads...

We'll see just how good they are..up first is Tennessee!

First up is SD State

you are right...

I should have clarified that…their first real game is UT.

SD State will not be a real test…that’s just an appetizer.

I' think SDSU will surprise the bruins and I not sure the Boys will recover.

Whatever the spread is I would take that one for SDSU, Ucla is lucky that Walker didn’t get that job.

You can tell RN is a gambler for the fact that he is already counting W and L on there schedule.

As a competitive tennis player I learned very early on that you can’t count your chickens before they hatch. You have to take every match as one point at a time, then game won, then set won. If you look at it as a whole before it is played you will never be able to recover, you be always saying I should have one that point or game or match.

Basically Rick I will give you a tip for free It’s one game at a time and the game inside the game.

'Member when Bruce Davis (our favorite Bruin dumbass) . . .

. . . got his “daytime privilege bracelet” (the shiny baby blue ones) back and was allowed to attend the PAC 10 media days a few years back? Yeah, he and Coach Dorrell were all buddy-buddy and matchy-matchy with their clothes ensembles and all. They had a grand old time. Especially Cry-Baby Bruce. He was mumbling all kinds of Bruin D this, Bruin O that. D’ o ! That’s right. They choked on the big-chubby THAT year too!

fUcla AIN’T GOING ANYWHERE this year. If any of them make it to The Hollywood Bowl (for some entertainment). . . . I’ll be trippin’. . . . . (that’s how broke their W – L record will look to me. ;- )

Dewayne Walker can't be replaced

I think the Bruins will struggle big-time, yet again. Rick’s house will start to crumble. How long can elderly Chow sit in the saddle with these horribly pathetic offenses? How will the new D-coordinator handle it if he fails to fill D Walker’s shoes? And, how long will the players and fan base support Slick Rick’s snake oil pitch? I predict major drama for the Bruins. Can’t wait to enjoy the show.

Just to let you know that DL at sdsu goes 270-270-300-250

LB are good size also and they always have great DBs

I thinking SDSU 13- nestor U 6

Paul gets the Swami Award....

for prognostication of the month if SDSU wins. I know nothing about them, but Paul makes me believe that an upset is possible. That would be so awesome that only a win on the road in Columbus could top it early in the season.

I like the coaching hires the Aztecs made this year

Brady Hoke, Al Borges, and Rocky Long are a nice triumverant for a Mountain West team. I’m assuming Long will instill his 3-3-5 defense with blitzing coming from everywhere, which might be confusing to a young QB like Kevin Prince and an inexperieced O-line. Borges has previously coached Cade McNown and Jason Campbell, who both had quite a bit of success at the college level. The Aztecs QB this year is Ryan Lindley, a redshirt sophomore who definitely has some talent. Hoke and Borges should be able to coach him up into a pretty solid player.

All that being said, it takes time to install these new systems, and I’d expect to see quite a few blown assignments early on. From my recollection of the 3-3-5 when Long was at UCLA, it’s a high risk, high reward defense. So those blown assignments should result in big plays for the opposing offense.

The Bruins should still win, but for a guy like myself who grew up in San Diego, there is actually reason to be excited about SDSU football for the first time in decades.

Look for the tight end

No doubt the tight end will be a major factor in the ucla offense this year. The short pass, keep the chains moving philosophy will keep the blitzes off of Prince. It will be interesting to see if Prince can draw in the defense, and make some big plays this year. Craft couldn’t deliver in that regard, mostly because he always had the D-line in his face after he dropped back 3 steps.

and sometimes when he did have time, he seemed to think the D was on his side? ;-)

by impaulv on Aug 2, 2009 8:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes

rule #1- throw ball to your team. Not the other team.

You have to at least give Kraft credit for standing behind that line and taking the punishment all year. He also had the Tennessee, and Stanford comeback wins, as well as the almost win against Fresno. When you think about it, there’s only been like 2 seasons over the last 10 where the ucla 1st string QB has started every game. It seems like there is always injuries happening for you guys at that position.
