"I think it’s more hype than anything, honestly," Thurmond said. "Was he a five star (high school prospect)? Not putting down Taylor Mays, not putting down his athletic ability and what he’s accomplished. But just the (Trojans’) style of defense, they really just have him in the deep middle.
"It’s really not a lot of action, I think it’s more just physical. That’s why he has a lot of hype around him because of his physical stature.
Oregon’s Thurmond says Mays ‘has a lot of hype’

Oregon AD to purchase flak jackets?
If Mays reads Wally Thurmond’s comments, Chris Harper, Jamere Holland, Jeff Maehl and LeGarrette Blount are gonna need some Kevlar protection. Have fun with those slants and short posts boys! Try not to flinch before you catch the ball.
Mays vs. Thurmond
Too bad Thurmond doesn’t play on the offensive side of the ball. He will never have the joy of getting hit by Mays. I don’t hear any Duck receivers saying much right now! They seem a little smarter!!

Get thee to pharmacist!
Walter Thurmond 5 11 185 4.53 40 played 2 yrs #10 at position #71 est. draft pick 2010.
Taylor Mays 6 3", 230 4.40 40 (has run high 4.2 though) played all 3 yrs #1 at position #1 draft projection. All-Pac 10 2 yrs in row Thorpe Award Finalist watch (again 3 yrs).
Hey Thurmond: Eff, You, See, Kay ya ballet-built-lookin’-boy! Athletes say some retarded things, Thurmond was next in line- I guess. Dude, we’re bigger, faster, stronger, and hit harder than any team in the country. Have fun this year, but come Halloween Night- tell you what- how about you’all figure out some tricks for us. . . . .‘cause we’ll be sure to give you SOME TREATS! Oh, and by the way. . . .thanks for spanking OSU last year, ya big DUMMIES! And as such, thanks for the PAC 10 trophy. (something you won’t be seeing, holding or touching in YOUR LIFE!) Have fun becoming some NFL-walk on, II hear they’re getting paid a grip on practice squads these days. And if I may. . . ? Take your Ritalin boy! You act and talk all stupid when you’re off it! I like you better when you’re taking your meds dude.

Partially True
The quote is taken slightly out of context. He does go on to say he is a great player. The point that Taylor doesn’t have the stats to back up his hype is a fair one. Of course, it’s all due to schematics and intimidation. Will Taylor see some time at WLB?
Yeah well
I could have posted the whole comment but the message was sent in the first sentence.
it was still a back-handed compliment whats that clown done in the league?
Thurmond has done quite a lot in the league
you know, like lead the league in interceptions and whatnot. It was a stupid comment without warrant, no doubt. But not as if its coming from a scrub.

That's fair...
I don’t spend much if any time looking at the accomplishments of players on other teams So I am not familiar with Thurmond’s accomplishments.
Don’t think that teams won’t line up for him at the draft. He has so much ability and potential…and he is coachable which means he could really take off in the NFL.
Hard to make plays when the opposing team does everything it can NOT to throw it your way…
Mays didn’t have to make plays like others players did because the USC front 7 pretty much dominated the other teams offense and they didn’t want to take the chance. Mays has also played a position that leads to less plays than the other safety position. That should change this year if he plays the other spot.
Mays could have sat back there sipping Mai Tai’s and still been just as effective because of the overall defense. Mays got “burned” once that I saw and that was against ucla on a gimmick junk play…notice they didn’t score again!
More important is the intimidation factor. Go back and read Bruce Feldman’s piece on Mays and Ellison in ESPN The Mag last season…nobody wanted to take the chance of going up against them. And Mays has been that good since his sophomore year.
believe me
I’m not slighting Taylor Mays. Hell of a player. Like I said, it was a stupid comment. But Walter has done enough in this league for me to give him the benefit of the doubt.
Too bad they don’t get to go up against each other.

It wouldn't be right
Thurmond would get clocked back to the Cenozoic Age if they went up against each other. Nothing Thurmond can do in the next 5 years will put him in Taylor’s rareified air. And what do you mean, “benefit of the doubt”? The benefit of doubt to say something retarded?

it just means that I'm not going to completely blast him for it
yeah, it was retarded. But think of it this way. If Brandon Roy talks smack about Kobe, it would probably be stupid to do so, but he’s Brandon Roy, so what are you going to say. Whereas if Brian Scalibrine does it, then you’re like “who the f*ck does he think he is?”
Thurmond is no Taylor Mays. But he is one of the top five defensive players in this league. So I’ll just shut up and not blast him for his stupid comment.

Never heard of him
Dude, (insert first name here) Thurmond isn’t anyone I know “in this league”. I HAD TO look up his first name the first time I commented and I still can’t remember his name. I’ll trust that you’re right he’s “one of the top 5 defensive players”- but I’ll add to it. . . “that nobody knows”. How’s that?

You think you're cute with the Brian Scalabrine remark
Well, he’s a Trojan who’s STILL IN THE LEAGUE. And. . . .not only has he been to the NBA Finals on 2 different teams- he’s got a NBA Championship RINGGGGGG! too. Good luck with Brandon Roy and the team of punch-happy misfits. I hate the Lakers, but I’ll watch them when they play Portland JUST BECAUSE I HATE THAT TEAM SO MUCH. EVEN MORE THAN THE LAKERS!

And is a common criticism against Mays
a lot of NFL fans don’t think Mays has what it takes to be a star in the NFL and that he’s more of a physical specimen than an actual safety talent.
[DELETED ZOMG NO POLITICS]
Well I guess against OU we will have to let Mays run the ball.

Scalabrine is No Scrub!
He had great game as a youngster and is now the crafty veteran off the bench. Scalabrine is a mighty Trojan!
