Rey Maualuga on the Dan Patrick Show

Great Interview with Rey!

I love how he says that the bruins he has talked to like that whiny punk Bruce Davis only talk about 13-9 not the losses that they had at the hands at SC.......clowns.

He really sounded at ease and comfortable with where he is at in life and I want to see his hair dyed ORANGE!

Bruce Davis only wanted to talk about 13-9? No way!

What a surprise that he would prefer talking about the win over USC instead of the three losses while he played for UCLA. Sounds like a nut to me, too.

it isnt hard to argue

that that particular game was the highlight of his career in college.

by frak on Jul 15, 2009 3:04 PM PDT reply actions

My point exactly...

I have said it a million times before…

13-9 is the defining moment in during that span of ucla football…..they promptly shit the bed against Half Assed U.

I still love his crying after the BYU loss…

Of course they won’t talk about the 66-19 drubbing they took but they have little else if anything to brag about other than 13-9…

This is what I find to be amazing

When USC broke ucla’s streak, I didn’t talk trash to anyone. I was more relieved that the streak was over. It just seems foolish to talk trash to an opponent that has basically owned you for a decade.

Ditto

Same here frak. I was still in my dreamstate over the 2003 team. Basically, I was waiting to wake up, EVERY GAME during the streak I devised numskull scenarios about how “we’d lose the next”. I practically knew more about our opponents on any given Saturday and totally not know who was injured or suspended/investigated (’member those Justice, Wright, et al days?).

The Cal game 2004- I gave my tickets away. On the day of the game, I bought 2 from Steve’s Tickets (bye-bye Christmas money) and ended up at the Portofino Hotel down by Manhattan Beach and SPENT EVEN SCADS MORE MONEY . . . . it was a memorable Oct. 8 birthday weekend!

Anyway. . . . .way to go. . . . .Bruuuuuuuce. (my friends and I always say that. it’s rather pleasurable in a most weird-like sense)

well, duh

Come on, Paragon. We’re talking about the worst decade of UCLA football since the 1920’s, of course Davis and the rest of us are going to talk about the one big moment and try very hard not to discuss the many, many lowlights. 66-19 was only one of the eggs laid this past decade, and I am not (as I am sure Davis is not) terribly eager to talk about Bush’s hurdle over whatever hapless DB tried to tackle him or Notre Dame’s worst team in forever punking us at home in the Rose Bowl. Since 1998, we have nothing to brag about other than a few miracle wins in 2005, the Sun Bowl victory over Northwestern the same year and of course 13-9. Yeah, we’ll be talking about 13-9 for a while.

Also, my recollection is that Davis didn’t smack talk USC after the game so much as smacking around Herbstreit and the rest of the ABC/ESPN Gameday crowd for dismissing UCLA’s chances out-of-hand. If he did run a little smack against USC-kinda hard to blame the guy considering how heavily favored USC was and how contemptuously UCLA was treated before that game.

by ucladj89 on Jul 16, 2009 10:24 AM PDT up reply actions

Contemptuously. . . . . .indeed!

Sprinkle a good-heaping of disdain, blend gently with “for good reason”- and you have the makings for boiled crow!

I guess . . . .? (sooner or later, this has to get to Leinart’s “better” remarks.)

I don't know about "for good reason"

UCLA was not a good team that year but the defense was quite good, and the line was double-digits but not IIRC anything like 20+ or some number that justifed the absolute rubbishing of UCLA’s chances in that game. But the commentary from the ESPN crowd was so over-the-top that I felt Davis was entirely justifed blowing his stack like he did after the game on TV.

Homegrown, it's 'SC & Ucla. . . . . .

. . . . .ANY REASON is a good reason for smack talking (that is, prior to a game/match/what-have-you) If any interested party elects to do so with respect and humor. . . .ALL THE BETTER! Oftentimes, the “respect” and “humor” aspects take a back seat, which is quite unfortunate. I love me some “casing” and “bagging” every now and again, but mostly in good fun and good taste. Share a few laughs while sharing the same space, know what I mean? Disparaging partisan smack is a tricky issue/situation. Knowing when to say “when” in those affairs are a bitch!

Yes, fUcla wasn’t all that great. . .but c’mon ucladj- I hope you know by now, we here at CC have a degree of respect for Bruin football- simply because of the tradition-rich highly-competitive games we’ve had throughout our rivalry, that most everytime we meet up- it’s never “a gimme”. No, it didn’t surprise me that y’all won that 13-9 game. I didn’t expect it, but I wasn’t caught off-guard. I was supremely pissed off, but . . . .hat’s off! Great scheme by Walker, great pace by Cowan. Wow, it still does something to me, that game.

However, not like the Texas game. (and Stanford and OSU last year? out of sight, out of mind. PAC 10 conference teams are like that, most folks outside the PAC-10 radar will never understand how competitive our football games are. it’s weird, but whatever?)

you guys have no respect for UCLA football

but that’s OK, the USC football team did after 13-9:-)

by ucladj89 on Jul 16, 2009 1:38 PM PDT up reply actions

We, ahem- I do

I can’t speak for anyone else here on CC. What I don’t have is respect for the abhorrent chronicler of Bruin football over at . . . .that place. And, like you were not partial to Coach Tim Floyd’s persistence towards pursuing “iffy” players for Trojan basketball (and to that end, quite right about that, in the end), I’m not convinced that Coach Neuheisel has changed his stripes as a coach. Meaning, I have a sinking feeling he’ll try to cut corners, fib/lie/acquiesce towards bending the rules of engagement as it applies to recruiting, coach conduct, or program oversight. But. . . .that’s about it.

As far as kids playing football in a Bruin uniform, I don’t care if John Franco ends up coaching you guys after ditching his commencement address this past year- I know you guys will come to play and give it your best. If that’s not respect, I am at a loss for the word I’m thinking of.

It was your coach, but that is hindsight now, if the school would have given him a little more of a chance.

I feel you guys would have been up there, but now the weasel politician I say not.

I get the smack talk after the game

I don’t get the smack talk 2 years removed from that game. It was almost as stupid as the Cal fans in 2004 retorting with “Well we won the stats game” after USC held them on the goal line.

by frak on Jul 16, 2009 12:38 PM PDT up reply actions

we talk smack about it

because there’s nothing else for us to talk about when it comes to UCLA football this past decade except 13-9.

Yugo car buyers are reminded as they drive away their new car. . . .

. . . . by current hapless Yugo owners, with signs saying, “Yu-goin’ to be takin’ the bus soon, biatch! Like us.”

I’d rather fork out cash for a Le Car with a Peugot moped motor than a jankass Yugo. Didn’t that Yugo revenue/money go to some dictator or something?
