Taylor Mays on Matt Barkley
Interesting comments from Taylor Mays regarding Matt Barkley.
When asked about the quarterback competition between Barkley and Aaron Corp in general, Mays responded with this:
I think Matt Barkley throws the ball really well. He throws the ball better than anybody I've seen, especially when he rolls out and sets his feet and fires it. I think he makes dumb mistakes, but he's supposed to make dumb mistakes. I think he'll only learn and get better. He has the potential to be the next really, really, real big name. He's starting to develop into that player.
Obviously, Mays gets a great view of what the quarterbacks are doing, so his take on Barkley's talent is meaningful.
If Corp goes down Barkley's getting the call...

Dude, I'm telling you
I’ve seen Matt practice twice. Once, a whole day of warm-ups, stretches, non-hitting drills.
The 2nd, 7-on-7’s practically the entire afternoon.
This guy HAS IT. I don’t say that about anyone. Never said it about Sanchez. But, after the Rose Bowl, I’m saying it now about Sanchez.
This kid hasn’t played in a college game yet.
Matt Barkley has it.

Poor kid is in QB limbo.

Barkley is flavor of the month
Everyone was all up on Sanchez over Booty, then Mustain over Sanchez, now its Barkley over Mustain. When it comes to QBs, seems like everyone likes to drive the new car around.

I just find it funny
when people want to turn the offense over to a true freshman based on his rivals rating, and some spring ball. We need to stick to the formula. Develop young QBs for a couple of seasons, hand them the keys to the ferrari, and let them win Heismans. Barkley is going to have to ride the pine for a couple of years before he gets my vote.

Barkley might not sit around and WAIT for a Heisman. . .
. . .to come to him.
Think about it. Think about it some more!
He’ll stay only up and until he has the best leverage to take his game to the next level. It doesn’t matter whether or not you or I agree with that type of system, but that’s the system that’s in place. T2 (Tim Tebow) is around because he ain’t gonna do diddly-squat as a QB in the NFL. So, yeah- your mentality and philosophy might work over at Florida.
Here at ‘SC, if you’re good and can prove it to the coaches. You’ll play. True freshman or not. True freshman QB or not. Chances are, you’re gone when you win at ’SC.
The old saying, “if you can make it in New York City, you’ll make it anywhere” has been changed in football. It’s a ’SC world now, everyone else is just playing in it.

Would if Aaron gets crushed in the tOSU game?
Mustain becomes ineffective, and then Barkley comes through in the trenches.
Both of you are gonna look silly when Barkley takes our team to the PAC 10 title this year.

If that indeed happens
I will gladly post about being wrong. I can admit it when I make a mistake. But you guys have to ask yourselves, where did all of the Mustain love go from the last 2 years. Everyone was all about Mustain when Booty took over, and when Mark was battling for the job, and now he is just vanilla. Everyone is on the Barkley bandwagon, and this guy hasn’t even taken a college snap yet. There is no way that Barkley gets to start as a true freshman, barring injury or massive meltdowns by Corp and/or Mustain. Pete is a cautious coach. He prefers experience over raw talent.

That was then, this is now.
If I remember correctly, Mustain came with a SEC pedigree AND some baggage. Everyone wants to see the young man turn it around. Thumb his nose at Coach Nutt (ball), Arkansas, and the rest in the SEC. Redemption is a powerful experience, not only does it do wonders for one’s self-esteem, the quality itself puts one into a blissful state of exhilaration rarely matched again in life’s journey.
So yeah, it’s not hard to understand wanting to see Mitch Mustain do well 2 years ago.
Besides, during Mitch’s play in mop-up time during regular season games- he’s had some good TD throws and some crazy forced-throws that we all know the coaches put with up in practice. We, too, have had some time to see Mustain play. Frankly, he’s not done ENOUGH to warrant the hype that preceded him. We know this only NOW, hindsight is our friend in this regard.
Coach Carroll has never had a new freshman quarterback in his camps WITH THIS MUCH GOING for them, as Matt Barkley. Before we start spouting off Rivals stars and what not, I suggest we go with what comes out of Coach Carroll’s mouth after spending the spring with Barkley in his camp.
This comes from a Michael Lev interview in the OC Register:
"He has natural anticipation. Whether he’s working with the youngest guys or the guys that have been around the program, it doesn’t matter — he’s forcing them to get out of their breaks. The ball is delivered so early, with good speed and velocity. Our guys have to get ready for him. One of the things young quarterbacks rarely show is anticipation. They have to see guys get open, and the ball generally comes out late because they are not sure of themselves. Matt hasn’t been like that. He anticipates better than anybody we have. That’s a big, big asset, and it’s a big part of us trusting his ability to make the throws. There’s a lot of things that he does better than any of the guys already."
Carroll added that the only major hole in Barkley’s game is not knowing the sideline communication signals — which Carroll called "the least difficult" aspect of the quarterback job.

I saw him in the allstar game and he was the best!
Dude had complete control of offense while Ruins QB was out to lunch, kid is star in the making. The funny thing is that he was not in that camp as long as others, only 2 days to prepare and get feel of players.
