Noel Johnson Released from his Letter of Intent

Bumped...Looks like some rough seas ahead. - Paragon

One for the basketball fans: Noel Johnson asked for and was given a release from his commitment to play for USC.

Gary Parrish on CBS Sports Online puts it pretty succinctly:

So while it seems possible that Floyd will survive the Mayo mess in terms of his job (if only because some of the allegations are probably unprovable, and it's always hard to show what a man knew and did not know), it's already obvious that his program will have a tough time enduring the "cloud" regardless of how all this shakes out.

Allegations matter, even otherwise unsubstantiated allegations that have yet to be proven with any substantive corroboration.

still

I don’t blame Johnson for not wanting to take the risk with his career.

Not at all

At some level, whether the allegations are true, the damage is done from a PR perspective. In the unlikely event that I had a basketball playing son thinking about SC, I’d probably steer him somewhere else… it’s not like the team’s that good.

You would think that

Floyd would break his silence regardless of the policy of not commenting on an investigation that is open. Real harm is happening to the basketball program. If he can’t go public and deny the allegations without breaking any USC or NCAA policy, then how is he supposed to defend himself.

Understand Noel's Decision

If I was his Dad, I would feel that same way. But, he had a legal obligation to come to SC. I wonder if his LOI gave him an out for NCAA investigations? Still, I think colleges should enforce LOIs unless there are extraordinary circumstances. We kept a place in the class for him, we did not recruit other players, and we are now faced with a gaping hole in our class. I can only assume that there are major events happening within the program that persuaded SC to release Noel. At this rate, the program is dying because the university will not address the allegations.

Noel really, really hurts, as I suspect he would have been an outstanding Trojan on and off the court.

Not to be snarky

But can anyone direct me to an example of any University aggressively and directly attacking allegations while an NCAA investigation is in progress? And the Shaun Walters lawsuit is not a good example since the University sued the agent collaterally after the report was issued.

I can think of reasons why a University would stay silent, especially for the obvious reason of making sure that the story remains under some control and someone doesn’t put his foot in his mouth, kinda like Chris Penrose telling ESPN that he rarely saw Guillory around the program, then telling Adam Rose of the LAT that he saw Guillory around Mayo’s dorm all the time. Yes, both could be true, it’s not contradictory for someone to be around an athlete’s dorm room yet at the same time be kept away from the program. But modern journalism is rumor driven, and rumors don’t take kindly to subtle distinctions, and with sports writers being the village idiots of journalism, any rumor is as good as a fact. Thus a school would prefer that the ESPN’s and the Yahoo! Sports of the world receive as little ammunition as possible, so they don’t have to respond to the breast beating morons of sport punditry.

But there are times when an aggressive, public stance is advantageous, and this would seem like a good time to mount a defense, so i wonder whether their is some NCAA regulation prohibiting school from commenting during an investigation in progress.

I’m not sure, but when the Bush-Lake stuff broke, the school and the coaches issued generic the “we are cooperating fully with the NCAA and we believe that we have done wrong but we can’t comment on specifics” statements that, at the very least, calmed down recruits and alumni. The school also mounted a behind the scenes defense, letting reporters like Scott Wolf know that they thought the allegations were bullshit, and then acting like there were bullshit by keeping the football program in an aggressive, open mode. But this wall of silence, and the new, defensive crouch along with severing ties with Sidney and allowing Johnson to decommit (wonder what, if anything, Hill heard through the grapevine that made him decommit) tells me that someone in the University is taking these Mayo-Guillory allegations and the NCAA investigation very seriously, that that someone (or someones) is not Mike Garrett.

I really don’t see how Floyd and Garrett survive this.

P.S.: I’m not going soft here. I am trying to maintain a civil tone (as was requested) as best I can and within the limits of my FDS (Floyd Derangement Syndrome). That said, I tend to believe that Louis Johnson is credible on this. After all, it’s not like Tim Floyd has ever lied before.

Lemme be the first to say. . . ..

. . . .good job Zou.

Comer4tide to Nico2.0: "How come I've never heard of any of your random songs?"
Todd to Comer: "Because if you had, he wouldn't listen to it. BOOM. Roasted."
Nico to Todd: "Shouldn't you be off voguing somewhere?"

I am cool with this...

if the kid doesn’t want to be here then let him go.

SC will ride the storm out, we’ll take a pounding and better for it. The question is who will survive??

Recruiting Class?

At this rate, we may not have a recruiting class. I wonder if you can negotiate an out clause in the LOIs, which Noel might have exercised. My problem is why let him out now after signing period is over? The Mayo allegations have been out there for many, many months. Why didn’t he ask out earlier in the spring, when we still could have filled his spot with a quality player? This late in the game, I would have tried harder to keep him. That is why LOIs are binding. The university spent a lot of money in compliance with the rules recruiting Noel. We did not recruit other players because of his LOI. Now, we are left naked holding our nuts. I can only presume that there is more bad news coming from the program that only the admin know about.
