Thats funny

USC paid for all my tuition. If you have good grades and apply for some scholarships, you can get through USC owing nothing like I did. As for the crime rate, I did experience the LA riots first hand, but I tend to look at that as a display of civil outrage. The neighborhood is much better than it was when I was there in the early 90s.

Another tidbit, the only time I was physically assaulted, other than schoolyard fights when I was young, was in Westwood, by a ucla football player.

USC offered to pay for my tution as well (this was back a while ago when they were succesfully trying to lure more qualified students). I was invited down to SC from NorCal by the Hispanic Alumni Association for a weekend long school visit. Loved the campus, was uneasy with the neighborhood, got my car broken into (on campus). Ultimately though, it’s a matter of where you feel the most comfortable.

Understandable

My car was broken into on 2 occasions. One time, I’m embarrassed to say was by a USC basketball player, who was caught with items from my car. On the other hand, I have had my car broken into 2 times in Westwood as well. So I’ll call it a draw.

Bikes Stolen!

Worst crime I experienced at SC was 4 stolen beach cruisers. 4! But, that’s life in the big city. I will admit that I actually find it sad how much of a slum Westwood has become these days. We actually enjoyed injecting our Trojan spirit into the Westwood bars in the late 80s. I’d much rather walk down Fig at night than Westwood now.

Grades are kind of irrelevant

without knowing what classes they are attached to. Did you take AP courses? How many? Did you take tough secondary classes or fill up on gym and wood shop?

One thing I would suggest is to find out if/when USC people will be coming to your state to do in person interviews. I did mine with Louise Yates from the Engineering school (I wanted to be an AE/AN) and I felt that this part of the process helped A LOT.

Also what is your intended major as a freshman? I have a feeling that trying to get in as say a Cinema major might be tougher than a major with fewer students in it.

I totally agree with bluemax

I didn’t go to USC undergrad, but from what I remember in high school when the USC recruiters visited- they were interested in my SAT ranking, foreign language fluency, and volunteer work- rather than class ranking, grades, athletics, or 2 years of AD (Academic Decathlon) membership/awards. I ended up at Davis, finally getting my BS at San Jose State.

If you can, find out what your SAT/ACT scores rank: both nationally and in-state. Write a phenomenal admissions essay draft and continue tweaking it to fit your major (DO NOT enter USC undeclared). Put in some solid volunteer work hours that can be verified through your school. And if you haven’t already- learn to fluently speak a foreign language, be it at your school or a private agency that can list any/all credits through the national scholastic clearinghouses. One more thing, and this is very, very important: clean up any MySpace, Facebook, or internet profile/account you might have. I’ll advise you to take out or delete any “untoward”, unseemly, or retarded information that might negatively effect you. These will be checked by most all admissions offices at any and all universities you might apply to.

Otherwise, check USC admissions and find out what percentage of out-of-state would be students are taken in any given new Fall admissions. Also, talk to your school counselor and find out if he/she has any contacts, knowledge, or info on USC. (like, “how many students from your school/area have applied to AND have been accepted as incoming freshman to USC in the past 2 – 5 years”? and, depending on your major- “how does my scholastic and work/volunteer background look if I want to get into the – fill in the blank – program at USC”? Lastly, talk to a few of your teachers (especially AP instructors) and ask them if they would be amenable to write a “recommendation” for you, should you need/want one for your chosen school or applications.

Why here?

You probably should speak with your high school counselor and not a bunch of random USC fans on a message board.

We're not THAT special?

He’s asked the very same question over at Roll Bama Roll, also in a Fanpostl. He prolly has a few others out there too. Who knows?

He has one in BN too. I think both LA schools should feel very unspecial.

by Harsha on May 28, 2009 1:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Definitely NOT that special

Most of us are extremely biased ncaa football/basketball fans and not rational administrators or counselors. What insight could we bring. I have some experience just because I went through the whole process this year, but in reality, you have to talk to someone inside. Even then, the college admissions process is a crapshoot. It’s really hard to figure out and isn’t always rational either.

…also he posted this same thing at the SB Nation ASU site. Why would anybody ask if they can get into to ASU? No offense, just check out their acceptance rate.

ACHO81 Recruiting

Acho, will you tell us which schools are recruiting you? Have you met with Saban, Miles or Meyer? How about Neuweasel? When will you schedule your summer campus visits and which schools will you be visiting? Have you ever met Louis Johnson? Has Jason Cole from Yahoo contacted you? Do you own a big screen, flat panel TV? Please come clean.
