Gregg Doyel...an equal opportunity offender
Gregg Doyel is at it again...
But this time he sets ucla in his sights.
[C]arroll doesn't face similar allegations. Carroll is accused, if accused is even the right word, of not knowing that 2005 Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush and his family were being richly compensated by a marketing agent while Bush was still in school.
Not seeing, or not stopping, that kind of compensation is a lot different than being an ATM for your best player. As far as these accusations go, Pete Carroll isn't Tim Floyd.
So who is Pete Carroll?
He's John Wooden.
And we all know what the NCAA did to Wooden when he had UCLA basketball rolling:
The NCAA did nothing.
Gotta love Gregg he really knows how blow things up.
But hey there is a silver lining in everything as Doyel offers up this gem...
Nor is this an absolution of Carroll. Just because Wooden was allowed to look the other way while Gilbert was providing his players with money, housing, cars, furs and -- allegedly -- abortions for their girlfriends, that doesn't mean Carroll should have been allowed to look the other way while Bush's people were allegedly receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of goods and services from a marketing rep.
What this story is, I guess, is my irritation that Wooden continues to be hailed as one of the biggest saints in college sports ... while Carroll and men like him are considered sinners.
How times have changed.
Even with all the good that Pete Carroll has done with his charity work in the community he still is still villified by his detractors.
Who knows if the Gilbert allegations are true...but as long as ucla fans continue to hold Wooden in such high regard and continue to point to him as all that is true there will be those that continue to attach Gilbert's presence to the program to Wooden's success. The response across town was predictable as they brought up the old Dan Wetzel article as evidence that this is just more of the same old crap.
In the end it really doesn't matter...Doyel has his opinions and those who disagree will continue to to take unbrage with his sanctimonius tone. I just got a kick out of seeing the shoe on the other foot.

Wow ... i just read that article
and I have to say that the reaction over at BN was so satisfying. The complete flip flop was epic. They went from hailing him as the news source that condemned USC as the most dirty program of this era, to questioning his integrity because he mentioned Sam Gilbert and John Wooden in the same article.
I don’t think that there is a single person that doesn’t admire John Wooden, heck I admire the guy, but Sam Gilbert will always be the skeleton in the ucla closet for all but 3 of their championship runs. Lucius Allen admitted to taking gifts from Gilbert on the HBO special about the bruins.
I think there is one truth that surrounds our program today, and that basketball program from the 60s. Talent attracts shady individuals. Some want to surround themselves with great players for the status that it brings to them. Others want to build business relationships before they are allowed to as amateurs. It doesn’t bother me that people want USC to be punished. What I find amusing is that the fans of the team with the 10 basketball championships won while their players were showered with gifts by a prominent booster, whom the athletic department was completely aware of, is calling for the NCAA to drop the hammer hard and without mercy.
To those who do not fit this description, and are rational, of course this doesn’t apply to you guys. But ucla has cheated in the past both long ago, and recently, and I’m sure someone over there will break the rules in the future. Right now we are the ones with the black eye to take care of, and if the tables were turned I would surely enjoy to see the boys in Westwood squirm, but in the end, we will hopefully get a fair judgement from the NCAA, and move on from all this ugly crap.
I saw BNs reaction and it is to bad for the poor little bears!
I grew up in LA and my mother new of Sam Gilbert through her Hollywood connections and it was always said that those players were well taken care of. It was just to me things as usual in the sporting world heck if you ever saw the movie ONE on ONE that was a portrayal of Ucla. Long live Tark the Shark and pyramids are just a Scam.

Seriously, I've never heard of Gregg Doyel. . . .
. . . only know (from the past week) that he spells his name with 2 g’s. Other than that, I try not to interest myself with people making their name off of belittling colleges, coaches, and fans. Sounds petty of me, but really. . . . .this guy’s doing enough of a job of pettiness to last a lifetime.
I can also give a rat’s ass about Gilbert during the Wooden days. We’re talking about Coach Floyd (a freaking COACH!) during the Carroll years.
This isn’t going to go away. The BN crowd are a bunch of tools anyway, what’s new on that front? They have nothing to do with NCAA penalties and sanctions. All they are good for is Bruin Circle Jerking with each other over why they feel so hated and inferior to all things Trojan.
We have to look seriously at how and what needs to change at USC. Seriously.

I agree Bix
If the allegations against Tim Floyd prove to be true, it is by far, way worse than anything that happened under Wooden’s watch at ucla. Its not even comparable. I just believe that if someone is going to through rocks at us, it shouldn’t be those guys.
I hear you frak
That old saying, “Pot, meet kettle, kettle pot. You guys really need a hug and a talk.” Bruins are so far up our asses, it now appears to be a VIOLATION.
It doesn’t matter what good or bad we (USC) do, they’re still gonna find fault in it. They’re like New Jersey to New York, San Jose to San Francisco, Jan Brady to Marcia. Little sisters? What can you do?
