Yahoo Sports continues their vendetta against USC

Floyd gave money to OJ's handler

USC men’s basketball coach Tim Floyd made a direct cash payment to a man who helped deliver O.J. Mayo to the Trojans program, according to Louis Johnson, a former member of Mayo’s inner circle.

Johnson, a one-time Mayo confidant, has told both NCAA investigators and federal authorities – including the FBI, IRS and U.S. Attorney’s Office – that Floyd gave at least $1,000 in cash to Rodney Guillory, a man who allegedly lavished Mayo with improper benefits while the guard starred for the Trojans.

No mention of this on the front page of the world wide leader. Seems to be a Yahoo exclusive at the moment.

I'm not doubting that this could be true, and if it is, well then holy shit.

Edit again for clarification: The story on coach Floyd is not from Dr. Saturday Or Shutdown corner. I think originally I intended to post something about one of the Yahoo blogs stirring up PC to the NFL rumors and then edited it to get the correct blog linked and lost my original text. Apologies to the crew at Dr. Saturday as I appreciate their fine work and will continue to frequent their blog.

I think it is easy for all Trojan fans to understand how touchy we get about PC to the NFL rumors, but it is always important to remain level headed when dealing with this kind of news.

Shutdown Corner

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Conquest Chronicles' writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Conquest Chronicles' writers or editors.

I edited the post and link as I realized later that it was Shutdown Corner not Dr Saturday that posted the PC rumors.

Was just about to post this...

The thing is, it seems like Lewis Johnson is the only one making these claims, and Yahoo doesn’t even have the story straight. $30,000 to Mayo while he was at USC? Come on, the original story was that Mayo received upwards of $30,000 from Guillory over a period of three or four years. Really poor reporting.

by Laughing Stock on May 12, 2009 8:38 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

One other thing to keep in mind...

With all of this supposed damning evidence it has now been over three years since Reggie Bush has played for SC and over a year since OJ Mayo has worn the Trojan uniform. Either the NCAA is completely incompetent, some of this evidence given by a former drug dealer and convicted felon may not hold up, or both.

Man… I shouldn’t be nearly as frustrated about this as I am because this Merry-Go-Round has been spinning for quite a while now.

I hear ya LS

But it’s that $1K that Coach Floyd supposedly provided Guillory in Las Vegas for “having a wonderful weekend” thing that’s kinda got me right now. Now, say this is something that was just brought to light? What does USC do now with Coach Floyd? I mean, someone at USC should have vetted this from him a long time ago, before waiting for it to be brought to light with the IRS, FBI, and NCAA officials in on that particular interview. Conversely, say USC DID know about this and filed it under “hard to prove allegations” or whatever? Why would they go ahead and still extend a contract extension out to Coach Floyd in light of this? It’s a weird twist that will be most damaging to USC to squeal out from under.

Then there’s the “picture” that has Ornstein and Lake posing with Coach Floyd? What’s up with that. THAT will not look good.

Based on those two new revelations alone, coupled with what we already know “allegedly” took place with both Bush (monies to his parents, mortgage, fly-Impal) and Mayo ($30K or not, association with Guillory in the first place, Mayo’s connection to BDA) it DOESN’T BODE WELL FOR US at all.

I’m not even gonna surmise the damage with all these new allegations. We’re gonna get stomped if any of this sh_t holds true. STOMPED!

The skinny on the $1K to Guillory

I read elsewhere that Johnson only told the IRS, FBI, and NCAA that he “saw the envelope” of $100 dollar bills. He has no other hard proof, like a picture of the money or a time/date variable of physical evidence to prove that the payment took place at the time/location that he alleges it to have occurred.

Basically, he has nothing. Whew!

The story didn’t confirm or even state whether or not Guillory confirmed this allegation in a separate interview with authorities. It was just Johnson, all Johnson and only Johnson.

It still is. (nothing new, in other words. just words of vendetta)

One would think

That there is no way that Floyd would be that stupid. However if he was, we can say hello to lack of institutional control.

Just Whistling Past Your Graves
Yahoo! Sports reported Johnson has told NCAA investigators and federal authorities — including the FBI, IRS and U.S. Attorney’s Office — that Floyd paid Guillory.

Gentlemen, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, or, more accurately, the messenger of reality, but one does not lie to Federal Authorities, because the aforementioned authorities do not like to be lied to, and put people in jail for said lies. Martha Stewart, Ed Martin ring a bell? So Louis Johnson would risk Federal jail time out of spite? If you believe that, then I have a basketball coach I can sell you. The name is Floyd, Tim Floyd. Real straight shooting, honest guy!

Well, to be precise, if Johnson did say this to the FBI, the IRS, and the USA, and he did lie, he really didn’t commit a crime. But since he most likely spoke to the Feds with counsel present (I’d be very surprised if Johnson didn’t retain counsel, once does not talk to Federal law enforcement without an attorney present), it makes what he says a bit more credible. And Federal Authorities don’t like it when they are lied to, even if one is make statements not under oath, and they have many, many tools at their disposal to punish lying liars.

And if Johnson repeats under oath this to a grand jury: Hello, severe NCAA sanctions! Good-bye competitive basketball program for the next decade! And welcome Bruin trolls for the rest of a Trojan fan’s natural life!

And while all of this was happening, Floyd suckered a few dumb ass alumni out of an extra million dollars. Yes, Floyd maybe a con-man, but I’ll admit that he is an excellent con-man. Bravo, Tim! You’ve made Bernie Madoff’s day!

Oh, you also want Yahoo! Sports not to have a vendetta against USC? It’s easy. Do not hire shady, cheating confidence men like Tim Floyd.

The silver lining out of this? If Guillory is dealing with Floyd directly and handing over envelopes with money in relatively small amounts, and Floyd has repeatedly lied to the Administration about this (which shouldn’t be hard to prove. After all, Timmeh is a lying liar pants on fire) Garrett may walk away from the dreaded " lack of Institutional control" and allow the Football Program to walk away relatively unscathed.

The B-Ball program? It’s fucked.

But then, if Floyd can only average 4,000 per game while cheating at levels not seen since the mid-1980’s, would the b-ball program really be that much of a financial drag as a last place team? Seems it would draw about the same.

Maybe maybe not

we had a sitting POTUS lie under oath in an attempt to parse the word “is” so nothing shocks me anymore.

I don’t know if he telling the truth or lying but nothing would shock me at this point and it certainly isn’t going to change my support for the Athletic Department.

and bruins trolls are last thing I worry about if SC gets hit hard… they have their own coach that’s a violation waiting.

Paul:

Because I happen to be gainfully employed by one of the aforementioned Federal Authorities.

As for Clinton lying? That was was completely different situation. At a certain, extremely high level of politics, the rules change. Louis Johnson is not at that level of politics. Hell, he’s not even at Martha Stewart level. And he has a prior conviction, so that means no “minimum security prison” for him.

And by the way, who do you think provides information and testifies against “Drug dealing Gang banger EX or whatever”. Other “Drug dealing gang banger ex or whatever” because that’s who they associate with.

“you have to understand prison is the norm for this jerk.” Dude, you have no idea what you are talking about. Extremely ignorant comment.

What’s disappointing, but understandable, is college sports fans’ blind yet fickle allegences. Just because he waives you preferred color of laundry, all the sudden Tim Floyd gets more than the benefit of the doubt? If he took the UA job, y’all would be crucifying him.

NOT FBI

My office defends those arrested by the FBI, so I have very intimate knowledge of how the FBI and AUSA work. And, as I write this, there are more than one or two folks sitting in the Metropolitan Detention Center in downtown LA for lying to the FBI and/or the AUSA.

When you talk to the FBI (often with an AUSA present) the first thing they do is explain what happens when you lie to them. Sometimes they write down a chart that explains the penalties for lying. It’s all very intimidating and they (the Feds) not entirely truthful, but it is effective.

Now I am assuming Johnson was present with counsel when he spoke with the Feds. I don’t know if he actually had counsel, but I am assuming so, because no attorney worth his weight in salt would allow their client to speak with any law enforcement agency, let alone the Federal Government, without being present. Anyway, if Johnson’s attorney were present, I doubt the Feds would start with an intiminating presence, but there most likely would be an admonishment of some kind before Johnson started talking.

The point is this (and I fail to understand why too many “fans” fail to understand this other than willful, strained ignorance): talking to Federal Authorities imparts a certain amount of credibility in the statements themselves because of the potential penalties that can incur if you lie. This is no longer “He said, she said.” Because these statements were made to the Feds, you have to take them seriously. The NCAA certainly does, and, at the end of the day, that’s all that matters for SC fans.

Mind you, Lake and Michaels, from what I understand, never made their allegations to the FBI or the AUSA, or to any law enforcement agency, for that matter. Keep that in mind.

OK, Louis Johnson is a scum bag. And talking to the feds does not make him suddenly an angel. But what it does is impart a bit more credibility into his statements. I don’t have time for a basic Civics class, but as I noted before, criminals are convicted very day by the testimony of other criminals. Rodney Guillory, scumbag, is not going to associate with Fred Rogers. He’s going to associate with Louis Johnson, scumbag.

by Zoulou on May 13, 2009 11:02 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

procedural question for Zoulou

Johnson alleges X. Guillory and Floyd reply with Y. X and Y are in conflict.

Absent actual proof of an envelope of money, who’s to say that Johnson is lying?

Put differently, it seems like there’s an element of hearsay in his story. Even if you put Floyd and Guillory near one another (with cell phone records or something?), it seems circumstantial. So where’s the risk to Johnson in making this claim? – how could anyone prove he was lying, all they can do is assert the opposite.

by DC Trojan on May 13, 2009 9:50 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The Risk?

I am not saying he’s not lying. I’m saying that If Johnson alleges X to federal investigators, and Guillory and Floyd allege Y to the LA Times, yes, the statements are in conflict, but the credibility is not equal. A statement to the FBI is generally given more credibility than a statement to a newspaper.

As for circumstantial evidence and such, the NCAA does follow the Federal Rules of Evidence. The believe what they want to believe and give it the weight they think it deserves. But note this, the NCAA is going to take a statement made to the FBI very, very seriously, and that they leaked this information to Yahoo means they are taking it very, very seriously.

Wouldn't?

Having your OWN COACH handing out cash to a “runner” for delivering a player to the program warrant MORE OF A REASON TO KEEP “LACK OF INSTITUTIONAL CONTROL” on basis for punishment, rather than say, having a booster doing the same thing?

To me, it proves lack of institutional control, rather than diminishes it.

The quality of the evidence speaks to Johnson's credibility

You say Johnson is credible because he allegedly told the Feds. We don’t even know if he spoke with the Feds. That’s a claim from his media whore lawyer. Regardless, what he purportedly told the Feds is circumstantial evidence based on conjecture. His story is full of holes, and of course, never puts Johnson in a directly illegal act, which would expose him to litigation from USC per CA law. He is not a credible source, thus his evidence offered does not carry much weight. Your argument that he is credible is weak sauce. Is every convicted crack dealer who spins a self-serving story to the Feds credible?

Locoweed, that Clinton statement

you quoted was not made under oath. It was made at a press conference or presidential address. It was a lie, but a lie not made with any penalties that could attach.

From this none-too-impartial Bruin observer, the whole thing sounds like a joke. I have a hard time believing Floyd would be so stupid as alleged here. Zouolou is obviously correct: people get convicted on the word of informants and documented liars, and the standard of proof in this case is not even remotely close to beyond a reasonable doubt, so the NCAA doesn’t need the kind of evidence you see in a criminalc ase to “convict” USC of a lack of institutional control. However, they are going to need more than the word of Louis Johnson to hit USC with sanctions, and that is why I presume the Yahoo people, ESPN and the NCAA are looking at receipts, invoices and other available financial data to see if any of the claims can be corroborated by paper. If they can, then USC does have a problem IMHO-but at this time speculation is a waste of time (albeit a fun time for those of us who are not fond of our crosstown rivals.)

Our fearless leader Paragon called me on it right away

Clinton made the statement in a press conference on January 26, 1998. I looked it up on Wikipedia before posting, and decided to have some fun with it.

The quote is accurate, but my statement was false. All it took was some quick research for you guys to discover the truth.

Louis Johnson is in the middle of a war with Rodney Guillory and has, and will continue to make statements with the purpose of advancing his case. The record shows that Johnson is a dishonest individual; so anything he says must be taken with a huge grain of salt.

It is shameful is that Yahoo Sports is willing to throw this “information” out there knowing full well that they trashing USC in the court of public opinion. None of it may ever be corroborated, but this is what passes for journalism in the world of the Yahoos. They are putting enormous pressure on the NCAA to punish USC, whether it is justified or not.

It's called obstruction of justice

Less jail time than perjury, but easier to prove!

Actually, on Wolf ’s blog, uscmike had an intelligent response regarding this. Imagine that.

And Deadspin’s new editor, Tommy Craggs, makes a few good points. Deadspin, not making cheap, snarky comments. Imagine that (although I think Nick Denton’s head might explode).

Decent related article from Jason Whitlock found here:

http://msn.foxsports.com/cbk/story/9400160

Still, more disturbing, is the blind, defensive, reactionary attitude registered by commenters over at WeAreSC, over at Wolf’s blog, and over here. Louis Johnson is a liar, so I am going to close my eyes and plug my ears. Lalalalalalalala, I can’t here you."
That’s weaksauce, folks. Sandbox stuff.

Is anyone concerned about the very, very bad PR hit the entire school is taking, all because they handed over the keys to a coach who was so desperate to rebuild his reputation he’d do anything, including taking an entore school down with him. Does anyone here take their diploma’s seriously, believe that a USC education has value, and that these episodes are harming its value?

PR Hit

I don’t believe that the public takes Yahoo Sports very seriously, for starters. Second, these types of allegations are ubiquitous throughout big-time college sports. So, did CTF beget bad PR, or is USC being unfairly targeted as the highest profile sports department in the country, thanks to the unprecedented success of CPC? I choose the latter.

I'll bite

No, I don’t think this will affect the value of my degree. The majority of the places I interviewed at only the HR lady (if the company even had one) really mentioned much about what school I want to and it was always the generic “Oh USC, that’s a really good school, we’ve had good success with their grads etc.”.

How is an athletic scandal going to affect the quality of an education I already received? Floyd taking money doesn’t suddenly invalidate the hours I spent studying, doing homework, taking tests, sitting in lectures. It doesn’t invalidate the knowledge I accumulated.

Sure it might get me a few dirty looks from a cashier here and there when I go out wearing a USC football tshirt or heaven forbid, my Reggie Bush jersey.

Way back in the 80's

The SC degree east of Las Vegas wasn’t held in the best of regards. It was considered the Florida State/ASU of it’s day, a jock school.

The school has done a HUGE 180, especially since Sample took over. Is anyone afraid stereotypes might return, especially in part of the country where USC grads do not flood the market?

Impossible

I’m from the Bay Area, by way of Chile- I visited USC while my cousin Katrina attended ‘SC back in the 80’s. I believe she got her degrees in Public Policy/Finance. I remember going through Heritage Hall, taking a GIANT Saturday tour of the school – in session- and being in awe of OJ’s Heisman and . . . .what I’m getting at:

In the Bay Area and California in general (I think? I was just 8 years old at the time) USC was considered a school of quality and ranked quite high across the board nationally for graduating classes during that time. My cousin is highly paid analyst in both private and public sector, she’s no lightweight. Especially, back then.

You’re both right. An ‘SC degree wasn’t worth as much as other selective CA schools outside of California & select markets until about 15-20 years ago. The admissions & academic standards where no where near UCLA, Berkeley, Stanford. That’s why the USC Alumni network was so important. Yeah, there were a few degrees that were valued a little more than others but on the whole, USC couldn’t compete with the academic prestiege of the other CA “elite” schools.

That did a major turn around in the late 80’s/early 90s. USC started getting more and more selective. Investing more in attracting quality students and teachers. More in the surrounding areas. Now USC & UCLA are almost virtually in a dead heat (both schools have points of strength, with UCLA holding very slight edge in the “polls”). Anyways, I’m not quite sure where i was going with this.. hhaa.. but in closing, SC fans don’t need to worry about quality of school issues. USC is doing extremely well in the sports world.. (well, maybe not as well as you guys would like). I seriously doubt anything bad will emerge from all this mess. I’d put money on that.

Afraid of the return of stereotypes?

No not really. I was on campus in 2001 which was the year after the whole Time Magazine thing. The seniors that I met during that time, and some other recent alumni I met were COMPLETELY types of people from my fellow freshmen and even more far removed from kids I met while at USC who came in the years after I did.

It would take a complete change in the academic culture of the university for me to be worried about my degree or stereotypes.

Do I expect to get shit from people who follow USC athletics who aren’t USC fans? Of course. But I don’t expect this to impact the school’s academic reputation.

Again, I take exception to your description of us here

If you don’t like us don’t come around. You have worn out your welcome at the other two places why do that here? You offer some good takes but attacking other members of CC is a non starter for me. I will address the comments directed toward you separately.

Fans are not rational. We kind of hope for the best and try to down play the worst. I am not an alum so I don’t know about the whole school pride thing. I just love the athletic program because I grew up around it, I was lucky to access to the baseball program and others because of my dad.

Its not that we aren’t concerned about SC’s reputation, its that there isn’t anything we can do about it. The school is going to take a hit. We need to weather the storm and stay loyal to the program.

I like your spirit so cal

but Stanford, Cal Tech, Berkley probably have a good argument for most valuable degree. I will totally agree with you that USC alumni do take care of their own. I personally have fired 4 bruins to make room for USC kids right out of college.

Maybe you should hire BNs greatest and then let them go because they can get that pizza there in 30-45 mins
