Thanks for posting these!
Awesome presser. Still, I think Mark may struggle for a few years to develop the mental acuity of an NFL QB. But, he’ll be a star by year 4. I remember how much Eli struggled early in his career, and can see Mark taking a similar path. I now have a new favorite NFL team…J-E-T-S!
I really think Mark will be alright
My friend in NY is worried about O-Line protecting him so I hope MS works on 3 step quickness and release, all in all great kid great back ground.

Question is
do the Jets get the Mark that played at Oregon State, Arizona, and ASU, or do they get Virginia, Ohio State, Penn State Sanchez.
Of all those games you mentioned
Only the ASU game was a real stinker for him. You can’t pin the OSU loss on Mark. No way. I pin that on the defense that was the greatest. I will. And I do.

I disagree
The offense was completely uninspired during the Oregon State game. The defense held OSU to 7 points in the 2nd half, and those points came off of an interception that was returned inside the 5 yard line. Bottom line is that the defense had their worst outing in an otherwise great season. They bailed out the offense way more times last year, and when they falter, and the game was in Sanchez’s hands to win or lose, he threw a pick. Great QBs come from behind and win. Mark Sanchez had 2 chances to come from behind late in a game, and threw interceptions both times. His numbers weren’t atrocious, but he was completely dead in the first half.
Disagree even more now
What happens to the QB and the offense when the opposing team puts up huge numbers, and they (the Defense) still didn’t quite stop the OSU offense from putting up atrocious numbers.
Any QB, be it Mark Sanchez or whomever (we can’t put Leinart- he was one of the greatest QB’s in all of college football) will make certain miscues, especially having to come from behind from so much. We CANNOT sniff at the OSU team of last year. They put up a stink in their Penn State game, but they came out and played some serious ball last year. Especially towards the end of the year. (last year’s Civil War, notwithstanding).
Tell me something frak, how do you propose Sanchez doing any better in that OSU game? Gimme a break already:
21 – 0 halftime lead for OSU
Mark engineers 21 second half points
THE DEFENSE LETS THE OSU get 6 MORE POINTS TO SECURE THE WIN . . . .IN THE 2ND HALF.
????
Don’t get it. Your turn.

Oh i dont know
Sanchez could have… scored 1 point in the first half. The defense gave up 17, which was a lot, but compared to the donut that the offense put up in the 1st quarter, and the 7 points that the offense gave the beavers in the 2nd half, i would say that the offense lost that game. The defense gave them 17. The last 7 was off the pick from sanchez. You can disagree, I don’t have a problem with that, but in my opinion the offense lost that game. 100%
We'll disagree
The defense gave up 16 points over their year average.
The offense scored 16 points under their year average.
It’s a wash.

Hmmm, I vote for the Def
Mark actually led an inspired 2nd half comeback. Made some great throws and plays to get us back in the game. Also, threw a bad pick. But, it was the Def who lost and failed to regain any momentum for us in that game. Quizz was still controlling the ball in the 2nd half, just not scoring. Specifically, it was Rey, Everson, and Averril that lost that game for us.
But, you do have to give Mike Riley and the Beavs tons of credit. They won that game much more than SC losing it. Riley is one of the best coaches in America.
Now, that ASU game of Sanchez’s was atrocious. I was positive on that day that he would come back for another year.
That's what I'm saying
Playing at Reser, with their rabid fans and not one INT and not one fumble, let alone recovery. Moveao throws for 170 yards and Rogers gets like 190 on the ground.
Not a great game plan by Coach. And vanilla playbook for Sanchez to work with. Sark even said so after the game.

Wrong
On the pick. The OSU player ran it back, was tackled before you can claim it to be a pick-6. The resulting touchdown by OSU was and is on the Defense. Just saying.

This was from my 1st post in the thread
“The defense held OSU to 7 points in the 2nd half, and those points came off of an interception that was returned inside the 5 yard line.”
I know it wasn’t a pick 6, but I hang those points on the offense when you give your defense 5 yards to defend over 4 downs.
Don't know how you do your math frak
17 points on the defense. Try 27, then we’ll talk.
OSU tried for a two-point conversion but failed. None of their scores were the result of a field goal, which would lend your argument any credence whatsoever. But your argument doesn’t have any credence so long as you insist on 17 points on the defense.
All their scores were the result of touchdowns. Read: no pick six by Sanchez ever happened. All were touchdowns. The resulting TD from a Sanchez pick was the run from Rodgers from the 2 yard line.
Defense lost it. We’ll continue to disagree, I guess.

My mistake
21-0 after the 2 quarters.
Not a single point scored by the offense. Not to mention that the offense didn’t sustain a drive long enough to give the defense any kind of break.
I’n my view the defense gave up 21, the offense gave up 6.
Your view is still skewed
Defense was out on the field for all those points. Sanchez wasn’t.
Goal line stand? For the greatest defense of 2008? Not asking for much. Even if it’s at Reser. How many defensive players got drafted this year? How many on offense?

So you are saying
that when the offense gives up a pick that’s returned to the 2 yard line, the defense is mostly responsible for those points.
I'm saying they're totally responsible for those points
They were on the field weren’t they?

I don't think any defense could hold a decent team out of the end zone
more than 1 out of 10 times from 2 yards out.
Go here to learn about USC's red zone defense
http://www.cfbstats.com/2008/team/657/redzone/defense/split.html
It shows, by a year’s stats/results: USC stops defenses in the red zone 74% of the time. Refutes your statement, somewhat.

I'm not sure what your reading
but when I look at those stats, it says that the defense gave up scores 74% of the time, and stopped opposing offenses 26% of the time. I think you’re reading it wrong. I stand by my previous statement. A score resulting from a pick, returned to the 2 yard line, is always the fault of the offense.
Too much coffee, I guess
But whether you stand by your statement or not, the stat goes against the defense. In the books and on the score sheet, it will never show that Sanchez gave up those points.
Agree to disagree.

I'm not talking about statistics
I’m talking about responsibility. Sanchez is responsible for those 6 points. Not the defense. I don’t even think Mark would argue that point.
Coach said after that game. .
. . .“I’m beside myself,” USC coach Pete Carroll said. “They didn’t hide what they were doing, they just did it. We couldn’t stop it. We couldn’t tackle.”
Seems to me our own coach feels the defense let the team down.

Only that I think that arguing that the defense is solely or mostly
responsible for a touchdown after given 2 yards of field to defend makes no sense to me. Just as when a receiver bobbles a ball into the hands of a defender is responsible for that interception. Stats can be misleading.
If you want to fault the defense for Oregon State, then thats fine. They gave up 3 touchdowns in the first half, but the came back and made no mistakes in the 2nd half. You can argue that the offense, after being shut out in the 1st half, came back and scored 3 times in the 2nd, and ultimately threw the gave losing interception.
Makes no sense to me that you think
Sanchez is overhyped, given the fact that he’s had only 16 games and won, really the only 2 that matter to me in a season- The Fighting Rash- his first game against them being one of the all-time Whoop Ass Wins in our history.
Based on those games alone, he’s a great USC QB.
We can talk ad nauseum about what makes sense to each other.
It’s obvious from your comments from 3 years ago up until now, you just don’t like Mark Sanchez. That’s all well and good, but I’ll defend Mark in this OSU game as much as you’ll blame him.
We already agreed to disagree on this point.
I’ve enjoyed this thread with you frak. You bring it. You’ll always have my respect bro. I enjoy all your comments. 100% of the time, I truly do.
I hope you feel we complement each other. You’re one of our very best here at Conquest Chronicles. You’re practically “our voice”. (and I hope you believe me, I’m being truthful and quite sincere. I am)

Its all good
and yes my opinion of Sanchez as a person is not good, and that may make me bias. I think he was a good QB, im much the same way Booty was. Whether or not he is successful at the NFL level remains to be seen, but I wouldn’t put any money on it.
You might be right
In referencing Mark “possibly” taking the blame for the loss. That’s what great QB’s and leaders of a team will/might do.
But, I think he’d dispute you wholeheartedly if you asked him whether he thinks he’s “overhyped” or “not a great QB” as you feel.

3 separate quotes from people intimately involved in the game
And they would know more about that specific game than either of us:
“Not our sharpest tonight — everybody, every position. There’s no need to point fingers,” Sanchez said. “I’m as guilty as anyone else. I threw an interception — costly late in the game.”
And here’s one from McKnight: (McKnight took the loss upon himself) “I didn’t make the plays. Fumbled the ball, Dropped a pass,” he said. “You can’t blame anybody else but me.”
Plenty of blame to go around, not one single person can be blamed for the loss.

to clarify
In my view.. its not the fault of the defense at all if they are given 2 yards to defend. If they happen to pull off a miracle goal line stand, then thats wonderful, and they are studs, but by no means am I going to hold them responsible at all, not even one bit, for those 6 points.
Not to mention McKnights fumble and dropped pass
That would have set us up for a first down on both occasions and SUSTAINED the drives. It was Sanchez that kept us in that game. Losing it? A total frak stretch.

I dont know if i would say that Sanchez lost the game
I would say that he certainly didn’t do much to win it. Thats what a great QB has to do. He has to pull out a 2 minute drill for a TD to win a game. So far Sanchez has never done that. Kevin Craft from ucla however has done that.
Kevin Craft
Very funny.
Certainly you’re not implying. . . . but you wouldn’t necessarily be saying. . . . .?? frak? what’s become of you?

All I'm saying
is that Sanchez had 2 chances to win or lose the game, late in the 4th quarter, and threw a pick. He’s a good QB. But I don’t think he’s a great one. I think he is overhyped.
That kinda talk goes great
At an anti-PAC 10 blog. But here?
Everyone’s entitled to their opinion, but when you open up a playbook for that boy, have the player personnel, and TRUST. . . .I’m willing to bet in 3 years, he’ll be one of the NFL’s better QB’s.
Oh and, “overhype” and “SC” kinda go hand in hand. Not that I’m saying it’s bad. It’s only bad when “overhype” makes two teams in the PAC-10 42- and 25 point underdogs in college football. (Stanford 2007 and OSU 2008, respectively- to USC)

We can continue to disagree
That’s ok. I’m not sold on Sanchez as a great QB.
What I saw was some brilliant games, speckled with a lot of mediocrity. Arizona, ASU, and OSU are my main gripes.
We'll see what a great QB he is in the NFL
Our coach and OC played it vanilla for Sanchez, and with good reason. He bolted and now, all we’ll have is the NFL to see his progress and potential become realized.
I, for one, believe he’ll be one of the best QB’s USC ever somewhat produced. Better than Leinart, Booty, and just as good- if not better than Carson Palmer as a pro.
We’ll see.

Yeah I agree
It remains to be seen. I’m not a true believer in the guy. I think he has talent, but I’m not thinking he’s going to be a huge success right off the bat for the Jets. If he is, then thats great, and I stand corrected, but I have a feeling that the Jets will be seeing a lot of games like that Arizona one in Tuscon out of Sanchez.
The Jets
Have got to get a better handle on their defense. If they can do 2 things:
1. Stop the run on defense, it is such an integral part of the AFC East game. And I think the Jets can get and become better in that department.
2. Establish the run. One of the best secrets to success for a young rookie QB is to have your team be a strong “running team”.
Rex Ryan is a rookie HC for the Jets, so. . . .I’m not too sure how all that is gonna work out. Tell you what though, considering my Raiders suck donkey d_ck! I’m fast-becoming a Jets fan. (Joe Namath was too old for me to say he was a childhood hero of mine, but . . . .he went to ’Bama- same place as The Snake! So, whatever. . . Jets it is for me. Next year. .;- )

Nice thread!
that’s what I’m talking about. Fight on, CC! Just to make the point, Stafford threw some bad picks and looked very average at times. I remember Carson throwing two picks in the endzone against ND. All QBs have a bad game or two. I just think Sanchez is a winner – awesome intangibles plus skills. But, I also think he will start out slow.
I agree on the slow start DFW
The good part is that Mark has two things going for him as a rookie:
1. He wasn’t the overall #1 pick (poor Stafford! shitty team AND it’s not set, as far as players- for him to do or develop well)
2. He’s NOT Matt Leinart-overhyped.
Mark will be called on to win the starting job, no doubt. Will he? I hope he does well enough to come on in the 4th or 5th game. In this regard, he’ll get a small feel for the speed of the game in a more controlled manner than just being thrust into the NYC-limelight so early and so green. Considering he only has the 16-games on his starting resume in college, he’ll be given (or should be) a short leash. Unless all the haters go all Obama-on-him and EXPECT a total change in Jet (America’s) fortunes and REAL FAST! The Jet’s already have a better base to work with than the Cardinals did in Leinart’s first season and will be far better off than the Lions are for Stafford.
Matt Ryan truly impressed me last year with the Falcons. They were dealing with coach, QB, and a running game issues. And that boy just flat out flourished. Flacco, on the other hand, was in the cat-bird’s seat from the get go. He did extremely well, all things considered.
Sanchez will have no such luxury, they have a rookie coach, a total die-hard fanbase, a persnickety media, and almost UNBEARABLE SCRUTINY to deal with from both fans and non-fans, the media, and front office.
Bumps and bruises are sure to come. But I feel that Sanchez has a way better head on his shoulder than Leinart, almost akin to Palmer’s. Speaking of Palmer, I hope he turns it around in Cincy. I dig that guy like something else. With Andre’ Smith and Rey-Rey- they’ve got some guys who can contribute right away. And all for the better.

Mark is a gamer!
He will do the best he can to get to level of starting and winning QB, plus he has the ability to communicate with all. This kid could sell ice making machines to Eskimos, his dad prepared him for this since gammer school. If the jets and NY let him he will be an asset to the community and the team, because he is team.
