US gets decent draw for South Africa 2010

The US got a decent draw today for the World Cup: they play England, Algeria, and Slovenia, which means they've got a pretty good chance of getting out of the initial group play round, unlike 2006.

Full groups list after the jump:

Star-divide

A South Africa, Mexico, Uruguay, France

B Argentina, Nigeria, South Korea, Greece

C England, USA, Algeria, Slovenia

D Germany, Australia, Ghana, Serbia

E Netherlands, Japan, Cameroon, Denmark

F Italy, New Zealand, Paraguay, Slovakia

G Brazil, North Korea, Ivory Coast, Portugal

H Spain, Honduras, Chile, Switzerland

No excuses. We have to advance from this group.

At USC we're not snobs, we're just better than you.

The US definitely lucked out by drawing both Algeria and Slovenia. Though I have a feeling both will still be much tougher than people seem to want to believe.

Still, this draw does seem to leave a wide open path for both England and Italy. Group G looks like loads of fun, while Group A seems the most intriguing.

Seems like Algeria and Slovenia have a chance to play spoiler thought, I wouldn’t sleep on them.

Never been so excited for the World Cup...

In my life. After the beating we took in ‘06, I hope this team will redeem itself. I’m definitely looking forward to it.

I like their chances. The English press is already writing about how England can get through the first round without too much trouble, but we’ll see. My sense is that when Bradley’s tactics work, they’re effective against teams like Algeria and Slovenia, and who knows? The US team will have a nice mix of players coming off the European season and players just having warmed up to the MLS season, they might have the fitness edge to give England a shock.

Wouldn’t bet the farm on it though.

Very Excited

Best draw ever? England vs US will be epic.

I have a brother in-law from South Africa and am now thinking of going. Anyone else?

Alas, probably not. The wife and kids will be in Vermont for the summer, and I suspect that making a solo trip to SA would be a bit of a public relations disaster. Still, this means no complaining should I want to watch every game of the tournament.
