(UPDATED) Norm Chow interested in the SJSU job?

UPDATE BELOW...

Not really surprising...he has always wanted to be a head coach. He has paid his dues so he should get a shot...

The San Jose Mercury News reports UCLA offensive coordinator Norm Chow is interested in the head coaching job at San Jose State.

The report attributes Chow’s interest in San Jose State to noted quarterback coach and former Spartans quarterback Steve Clarkson:

"The one thing he hasn’t been is a head coach," Clarkson said. "When you’re that creative, you want to give it a shot. You have to build with a quarterback, so you need somebody with a proven track record of developing quarterbacks, and that’s Norm."

Chow, who has interviewed for several coaching jobs in recent years, including UCLA’s, has long desired a chance at being a head coach at the collegiate level. He has been an offensive coordinator for the past 28 years, including three seasons with the Tennessee Titans.

I wish him luck...

UPDATE...

From Chris Foster at the LAT (I saw this on one of the boards last night but didn't really give it much thought or concern):

UCLA offensive coordinator Norm Chow said he has no interest in the San Jose State head coach job.

Spartans Coach Dick Tomey retired, and the San Jose Mercury News reported that Chow is on the preliminary list of candidates. But Chow said he has not been contacted by San Jose State officials and intends to remain at UCLA.

Chow spent the last two seasons at UCLA, overseeing a marked improvement in the Bruins offense. UCLA finished the regular season with a 6-6 record and is waiting to see whether a bowl invitation is forthcoming.

Like I said, I really didn't give this much thought...I did find it amusing. But if one cared enough to look closer it probably doesn't make any sense. SJSU is not going to pay Chow the money he likes and I am not sure how the Tennessee money is affected either.

Chow should get a shot at an HC job, but I really think he has left such a poor impression with his previous interviews that it is pretty unlikely that he gets an HC job at this point in his career. I think he is the perfect fit for ucla for many reasons so I am just not seeing him move along. SJSU is a small market job and Chow's ego is too big to stoop down to take that.

Considering that Slick Rick continues to go out and get top 15 recruiting classes (though he hasn't done much with them) Chow will have a "better" line-up to work with on offense instead of trying to rebuild an also ran in the WAC or whatever conference they are in.

I'd hate to lose him....

But he’s definitely paid his dues and truly deserves a shot at the head gig. Best of luck to him.

Meh

It may be a bargaining ploy, he’d have to take a big pay cut.

Didn't his last kid just graduate from SC?

He might just be looking to move on and finally get a head coaching gig…

Nah

He’s got a great setup in Manhattan Beach, it’s way easier to commute to work for MORE MONEY.

yeah, but sometimes you take a cut to get the job you want.

it’s not like he wouldn’t be paid a living wage.

silly old Lou Holz took a big pay cut to be the head coach at ND. he’s since made it up, I’m sure.

maybe not...

It’s not a pay cut if you look at more than a single season. He would make more in 2011 and beyond than he does at UCLA. After all Morgan Center has already said they won’t pay more for Norm than his base salary of about $300 plus change. Now with budget cut backs, that surely isn’t happening. Still it more than just money, it’s the chance to run his own program.

If he goes back to USC he’ll make close to a million.
