BREAKING: Urban Meyer Stepping down for health reasons!

I had a feeling when I learned of his condition...

Here is the link form ESPN

Urban Meyer is stepping down as coach of the Florida football team, athletic director Jeremy Foley announced Saturday afternoon in a release.

"I have given my heart and soul to coaching college football and mentoring young men for the last 24-plus years and I have dedicated most of my waking moments the last five years to the Gator football program," Meyer, 45, said in statement. "I have ignored my health for years, but recent developments have forced me to reevaluate my priorities of faith and family.

"After consulting with my family, Dr. Machen, Jeremy Foley and my doctors, I believe it is in my best interest to step aside and focus on my health and family."

Meyer will coach his last game for Florida against Cincinnati on Jan. 1 at the Sugar Bowl.

"Coach Meyer and I have talked this through and I realize how hard this was for him to reach this decision," Foley said in a statement. "But, the bottom line is that Coach Meyer needed to make a choice that is in the best interest of his well being and his family. I certainly appreciate what he has meant to the University of Florida, our football program and the Gator Nation. I have never seen anyone more committed to his players, his family and his program. Above all, I appreciate our friendship."

WOW

my friend texted me while i was in the shower with the news

with the loss of Strong and Meyer, can we steal any recruits from these guys?

I agree with Rabbit....

While I do feel bad it came down to health reasons, this could be huge for SC. We have a couple recruits choosing between UF and USC so this can certainly help our cause.

Not so fast Snowman, it’s going to open it up completely for those guys. You can bet Weasel, Tedford, Sark, and Riley will come calling.

Too Bad

that we will never see the epic Carroll vs Meyer, Gator vs Trojan showdown. Hopefully, we grab a UF lean or two. Look for Tenn to emerge as an SEC power sooner.

Let's hope it's not true

I make it a habit not to know too much about Gator football, it’s hard to discern between the myth and reality. The reality, as I know it, is that Gator football gets a pass- I mean how often do you hear the announcers talk about the players on that team and all their DUI’s, traffic/speeding tickets, etc when they play a game. (ineligible, code of conduct, etc???)

But as far as a football administrator/coach- Urban Meyer seems squeaky clean? Why? Because the magnifying glass isn’t as focused in Florida as it is in Los Angeles, that’s the only thing I can gather. But even still, what he’s accomplished as a coach is pretty phenomenal and doing it as long as he has from Utah to Florida? Geeze, either that guy’s given a pass or there really isn’t much to some of the accusations, player conduct, or principles of his coaching.

He says he’s hurting healthwise, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. When/if any NCAA investigations surface- he’s fresh meat, even if he never coaches another day in his life. (which, is the only thing I’d doubt, as far as the news that he’s stepping down)

For that matter, the press releases say he’ll still be a part of Gator football in some capacity- and if that’s so, you’d think if the Florida AD knows of some impending violations that have occurred on Meyer’s watch- they’d want him as far away from Gator-anything from this point forward? You’d think?

I’m calling bullshit! It’s all about saving their recruiting class after they were bombarded with calls from nervous high schoolers.
