Chris Carlson - AP

So, SC plays UNLV in Diamond Head Classic Final.

After two tough games against Central Michigan and St Mary's SC hopes to close the tournament out with a win. Here is a little bit on UNLV from the LAT...

USC faces Nevada Las Vegas in the championship game of the inaugural Diamond Head Classic. The Runnin' Rebels advanced with a 77-53 win over Hawaii. They are led by junior guard Tre'Von Willis (15.4 points a game) and sophomore guard Oscar Bellfield (10.4). Los Angeles Fairfax graduate Chace Stanback, who transferred to UNLV from UCLA after the 2007-08 season, is averaging 8.8 points.

So, join us here. I will be on and off the thread as we  close out our Christmas Celebration with family. Here is hoping for a great win!!

FIGHT ON!

Who wants some!

Come get a taste of my Trojans! Bring on the PacX!

This team needs a nickname? KO’s……Kevin’s……O’Neal’s…….???

Alas, we are one key injury away from being average. Did anyone else hold their breath when Leonard went down? Hard to imagine that we make it through conference with no injuries. But, we look great now!

I'm here now

Spent a good chunk of the day traveling and now has my computer back…I’ll be here for the second half. Looking great so far!

A little perplexing

I say give Nikola the ball. He’s a good passer and he can get it over the top if they decide to press on the inbounds pass.

by Laughing Stock on Dec 25, 2009 8:15 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Well Nikola has taken the ball out the past two times, which is a lot better for us.

He makes the best decisions with the ball? Looking for a quick pass back to the in-bounder?

by FightOn09 on Dec 25, 2009 8:15 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

There are OK reasons to do it....

But really, you want the ball in the hands of your PG after the inbounds generally, I honestly think the reasons to have someone like Kid Euro or Marcus Johnson outweigh any advantages Gerrity might have.

by Laughing Stock on Dec 25, 2009 8:20 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

I don’t like the idea of Gerrity throwing the ball into Nikola or somebody else in the corner, where the opposition has a great chance of sending a double team to trap.

After the Tennessee Game...

I was wondering whether Gerrity had the ability to create his own shot and be a scorer. I think this tournament has answered that question pretty convincingly.

Huge game for Marcus Johnson

Scoring in every way possible with a three pointer, mid range jumpers, and that spectacular finish just now. He’s also really bringing it on defense, but that’s basically a given from him from the way the season has been going so far.

by Laughing Stock on Dec 25, 2009 8:23 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Its fun to imagine

But hey, with everything that happened over the off season there is plenty of imagining to do considering the potential that SC had. I’m just happy with the way things are going now, and hey could you imagine if SC makes a run at a conference title? Wow, no one would have guessed.

by Laughing Stock on Dec 25, 2009 8:31 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

So much so that...

do you think it’s possible that he becomes a more dependable scorer than Lewis

Gottlieb is on the money

He made sure to point out that UNLV’s low shooting percentage was due to USC’s defense (contesting every shot) and wasn’t just some fluke.

Gerrity needs to play a bit smarter this late in the game

If you’ve been on the court for 32 minutes you’ve got to think twice about that mid range jumper, especially when he’s been fighting the press all night. The stoke just goes when the legs do, and unless its a set shot like a three pointer its just tough to hit those when you’re tired. Plus no need to force it when bleeding the clock will do just as well.

But hey, that is a very small criticism against his otherwise great play.

by Laughing Stock on Dec 25, 2009 8:43 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

You don’t need to force shots on the break either, especially when you’re up by seventeen points

Savvy play by Leonard

Attack the basket with a strong lead this late in the game and force the other team to play some defense. Perfect recipe for easy points at the line.

A little perplexed

Would it have hurt too bad to throw in Donte and Simmons? It gives the team a pair of decent ball handlers and a shooter with fresh legs without giving up very much, if anything, on defense.

The preseason basketball poster had Lewis, Simmons, and Stepheson. Maybe, they’d have been better off to put Gerrity, Kid Euro, and Marcus. Just interesting how the dynamics have changed over the first part of the year.
