Why Ben Howland will probably end up the same as the coaches before him!

Lately the Ucla mens basketball program hasn’t faired so good, and the Wagons are circling the Warrior. Coaching basketball at ucla is got to be the worst job anyone would take, because no matter what if you don’t win it all you’re just Poop. Looking back on the coaches since John Wooden left the program (stop coaching to be more precise) their has been 8 coaches. First it was Gene Bartow (52-9) a very successful coach before Ucla and could only last 2 years saying this during his first year, “ I figure this nostalgia will pass in about a year as long as we keep winning, as he is shaking his head “ wow was he wrong.

Then came Gary Cunningham (50-8) a former Wooden assistant he lasted only 2 years saying, "I just didn't want to do it. I had to do what was right for me. And I simply enjoyed administration more." Ok that’s better. Then probably the best coach the Bruins have ever had Larry Brown 2 years 42-17 who after leaving UCLA, said later it was his worst decision in his life. Then when tried to come back later in life took the ucla job only to renege the next day, I guess after a good nights sleep (nightmare) changed that thought. Then came Larry Farmer 3 season and a 61-23 record only a round of 32 in march goodbye thanks for the memories.

Next they got good old Walt Hazzard (how many times did he change his name, well that lasted 4 year and 77-47 not so good. Then came Jim Harrick 192-62 an Ncaa championship in 8 season running the ship woodenpop. Then a scandal about a car and food money ended that love in. Ah next Steven Lavin (the most hated by BN and some others) 145-78 in 7 seasons (6  seasons tourney), but couldn’t stand up to expectations. Now it is Ben Howland and ucla after early success with Ben is 4-7 right now, and Howland isn’t doing so well. “Howland said he never really sleeps that well. Six or seven hours most nights, and never very soundly. Falling asleep is the hardest part, so he reads the paper or watches TV for a while before trying to relax enough to let the day go.”

So I say maybe if the 100 year old coach would have just retired and moved on would they have had this list of Casualties, maybe so maybe not. As if the ghost of Sam Gilbert has always been upon the Ruins.

What is the soure of your antipathy

for Howland? Clean program, good results, respects other teams, down this year but the year’s not over. he’s not likely to end up being fired unless the losing continues into next year or unless UCLA fails to make the tournament a few times running, which is pretty unlikely given Howland’s track record.

yeah, I get it you don’t like UCLA’s offense under Howland, but he AFAIK has never trashed or said anything even remotely disrespectful about the USC program. Sheesh, you’re going just a tad overboard, no?

I believe the source

Is a indoctrinated bias against all things powder blue. I myself have the same symptoms. I don’t dislike Howland as a man, but when he’s on the court playing my team, I can’t say I think many nice things about him.

I am not agreeing with dj89

but, I really respect Howland as a coach. He has always been most respectful to USC. I thought it was cool how friendly Ben and Timmy were. I think Ben is a great coach.

But, it appears that his style of play may not be evolving with the game these days, or at least the kids expectations. And, I think that UCLA may throw him under the bus.

But, Ben is a good man. His final four streak was amazing.

Agreed

I have a lot of respect for Howland as a person and a coach.

by Boy Howdy on Dec 25, 2009 6:22 PM PST up reply actions

It's nothing to about the coaches it's about the fact that John Wooden can not let go and vice versa Ucla.

So I saying even though Ben is very successful he still can’t sleep at night, do you think that is good for ones life. And the BN boys are start to say it is OK to boo his team. You got to understand Ben came from programs that he put together and there was no pressure to do anything other than get to the tournament.

I agree with so.cal.

yes ben made programs with no pressure to get into the tournament. what i think the problem is that a lot of people expect him to be the next john wooden. what john did for UCLA back in the day is great. but this is a 2009 and i don’t think there will be another john wooden any time soon, no 88 game win streak etc.

but what i do hope is that ben turns this team around and gets some wins.

Dude, will there every be another John Wooden? Will there ever be an 88 game win streak?

Sorry So.cal, but your rant… er… post… was painful to read (from a grammatical & logical point of view).

I guess if what you’re saying is that Howland will eventually leave UCLA, then yes you are correct. We all get older and move on.

Thanks for the quick run down on UCLA basketball & the success that it’s coaches have seen. Sure, it’s hard to see anyone measuring up to Wooden but we’re just going to have to hope for the best.

(PS- just a little quibble, it’s not that Lavin “couldn’t stand up to expectations”, it’s that he couldn’t meet them.. but ah, what’s the point? I’m sure I could re-write your whole post to reflect what you really meant and it still wouldn’t make sense)

Merry Christmas!

Tsk, tsk Pablo,

Maybe you should just stick to your usual one liners. So.cal was making a point about the insane expectations your cohorts have put on each and every one of St. John’s successors. Ben Howland is a great coach, but he’s no miracle worker. UCLA’s mushroom people will be disappointed from here to eternity thanks to modern NCAA regulations and an expanded Tournament, but especially because there’s no Sam Gilbert around to stock the cupboard.

Now, did you really have to go down that path and get personal? Maybe the cold is getting to you, sorry. Anyway, Merry Christmas to you Pablo, and to all our Men serving the cause of freedom in distant lands -but next time you stop by, try to show us you’re not an a-hole.

It is sad because until this guy finally passes on he will forever hang out at ucla, why because THAT IS ALL HE HAS GOT.

yeah, it's tough to coach at UCLA.

Are there unnaturally high expectations? Maybe, but the coaches rise to the occasion or move on. Sorry, if you think fans having high expectations for a coach & team is bad than.. well.. actually, I forgot where I was going with that.

How is having had a LONG life at UCLA, lifelong friendships, an extremely loving family a sad thing? And by using the word “finally” in that sentence, it makes it seem like you’ve been looking forward & can’t wait for that blessed event (can you hear the sarcasm?). Nice. If I got to make 1/10th the impact that John Wooden has made on just his students (not to mention then untold millions who have heard of his ethics), then I would consider it a will lived life.

the problem with having Wooden as a standard is that his level of success will never be met again in a marquee sport in Division I athletics. it’s not an unnaturally high standard, it’s a standard that cannot be met in this age, where to win more than one national title in men’s basketball in a half-century makes a program elite.

that being said, with the resources and tradition at their disposal, it’s about as acceptable for ucla to miss the ncaa tournament as it for USC to have a losing record in football.

If you believe Lavin's problem at UCLA was simply an inability to "meet expectations"...

then you don’t really get it at all. I am assuming that you were implying that UCLA had/has such ridiculously high expectations that even a coach with Steve Lavin’s seemingly impressive record couldn’t please the fans in Westwood. If that is so, then you really don’t get it. I don’t know how many of Lavin’s games you watched, but I watched all of them and the UCLA fans who despise Lavin probably watched most of them as well. He wasn’t a good coach. What he was was a man who had great talent (first the leftovers from Harrick and then the ones he was able to recruit in his early years, still riding the coattails of Harrick and his National Championship team). However, because he wasn’t a competent coach, the players were running the show. IF they wanted to, they made an effort and won games. They were always up for the big games but floundered in what should’ve been gimmes. From people who worked for the team and others I knew who spent time around Steve Lavin, he was like a parent who was more concerned with his kids liking him then being a disciplinarian. And for anyone who has ever taught children or raised them, it is most important that they respect you, not “like” you. in time, if you have been consistent and fair, the consequences of that respect will be fondness.

I think of Lavin as someone who probably watched the film “Mr. Holland’ Opus” and dreamed of his own golden years being filled with players returning to let him know how his influence in their lives allowed for their successes in life. Unfortunately for him, he is remembered for exactly what he wasn’t: a coach (no need to even include the word “good” before the word coach). Baron Davis has made comments about how much success his UCLA team could’ve had if they actually “had a coach.” And by all accounts while he was at UCLA, he liked Lavin. Can you imagine anyone saying that about Ben Howland?

Believe me, I could go on and on about Lavin (how he even became the “coach,” how his players never developed at UCLA, him asking Wooden to be the best man at his wedding, etc., etc.) but my time on the LifeCycle is over which means so is my time on the computer.

By all means, continue to spend hours dissecting UCLA’s basketball team over here on a USC site (which I find odd , but whatever) but don’t insult every college basketball fan’s intelligence by using Steve Lavin to support your thesis.

by UCngLA on Jan 1, 2010 10:18 AM PST reply actions

See exactly you make my point, you are that fan still living in the Wooden Era.

Lavin was just one of the many in Sam Gilberts come collecting thats all, oh and BTW I have watch college BB a long time. I even have played against your current coach, and yes he is a hack but he is a good guy off the court. And if you don’t believe me just ask LO Romar.

by so.cal.native1952 on Jan 1, 2010 10:49 AM PST up reply actions

After reading my post, how exactly did you conclude that I am "still living in the Wooden Era"?

I only mentioned him in reference to a wedding. I thought it was obvious but my point was that it is absurd to use Steve Lavin as example of how UCLA fans have too high of expectations. His record in no way can reflect the true nature of his coaching tenure and any person who has truly followed UCLA basketball understands that.

I was happy with Jim Harrick (good coach) and I am happy with Ben Howland (good coach). I don’t feel any need to win repeated banners to prove anything. All I ask is that we have a good coach who I feel knows how to coach. I think three consecutive Final Four appearances is a pretty good indication that Howland is indeed a good coach.

You mean like Disecting evry little thing USC football does over on that other site?

Save it…

I could care less about Wooden and I am old enough to remember the end of his era but it is over…I love John McKay and he is an icon himself but you don’t see any shrines erected here for him.

As for Howland the jury is still out him unless you count Final Four Banners…

by Paragon SC on Jan 1, 2010 11:30 AM PST up reply actions

You remember "his era but it is over"? I never said it wasn't and...

I can’t understand how anything I wrote could have been interpreted as being stuck there; I wrote nothing about his coaching in my post.

And it is not just me. I know a lot of UCLA fans and not one of them ever talks about needing a coach who can win national titles every year. I just don’t know where these accusations come from. Just because UCLA fans have great fondness for John Wooden doesn’t mean they expect the basketball program to ever resemble what it was during his tenure. It’s pretty hard to get into UCLA and so the students are very intelligent and definitely smart enough to realize that the college basketball scene is very different from what it was in the 60’s and 70’s. Furthermore, the “one and done” situation is going to make it even harder for teams to even just be consistent contenders year in and year out.

And since you mentioned it, I don’t think the jury is still out and I do count three consecutive Final Four appearances as proof of Howland’s coaching ability. I think three trips to the Final Four can tell a lot more about a coach than one National Championship because you can win one championship by having the best team in any given season. Although Howland had some very good players, he did not have the best team in any of those years and yet he figured a way to get those teams to the FF

My goal is not to get into a pissing match here but John McKay is not John Wooden. I say that because whether you like him or not, and whether you agree with this or not, John Wooden has become an icon in American basketball history. A lot of that has to do not only with how well his teams did but also because of the kind of person he is and, in large part, to the fact that Americans respond very positively to people who are 1) successful and 2) don’t disappoint the public with crude or disgraceful behavior. Case in point: the favorability rating of Tiger Woods before Thanksgiving Day 2009.

And shrines are erected all over this country for sporting heroes. To act as if it is absurd that UCLA would celebrate someone who has meant so much to the school and to college basketball in general, to me, just seems ridiculous.

Well seeing you came here to engage US...

What is your goal here?

Our community has opinions like anyone else. Some right, some wrong but ours none the less.

I wouldn’t expect our guys to know a lot about your program and vice versa. But we can view things through our own eyes. Many USC fans view Lavin the same way that So. Ca. ’52 does…whether you agree or not is up to you. That being said that you were able to come here and have a civil discussion is different that what SC fans are accorded over there.

You made a lot of statements here but one that stands out that you didn’t respond to was the dissecting of each others programs.

It is a partisan SC blog. Bashing on our rival is part of the package, forming opinions on ucla based on what we see with our own eyes or what we read on the web or see on TV shapes peoples opinion…even if they don’t know all of the history or back story. Right that never happens on BN. You seem fairly rational with a decent grasp of things but it sounds like you are being selective.

As for my comment’s on Wooden…They were more in agreement to So.Cal than to your post, but Loco is right in his statement above…Wooden owes some of his success to Gilbert (so does John McKay BTW Gilbert “helped” out a few SC players too). Many ucla fans refuse to acknowledge that because it would tarnish the legacy of “an icon in American basketball history.”

I tend to believe Tarkanian when it comes to Wooden for one simple reason…it takes a cheater to recognize a cheater. If we are to believe the story of a convicted felon in regards to USC’s current issues then why can’t we believe the comments of a former coach who has a history of transgressions with the NCAA?

I have said it before and stand by it…class in sports is for suckers. Too much money and fame is at stake and the human soul is easily corruptible. And we all contribute to it with every penny we spend on the product.

A number of ucla fans live in a bubble…they don’t want to know the dirty back story. They would instead claim that Pete Carroll cheats when there has never been a SINGLE charge leveled his way especially when ucla hires guy who is a known liar with 50+ recruiting violations and an official letter of censure from the NCAA….

Talk about surrendering the moral high ground.

I believe in 2nd chances and Slick Rick is getting his and he is entitled to one just like Tiger Woods or A Rod is but that doesn’t mean anyone should forget or should be mindful of their transgressions.

As for Lavin…I didn’t really follow ucla hoops back then, so I really can’t comment on his claims. But I do know this expectations a re bitch…Heck, I only watched the Harrick title because there was nothing else on TV that night.

by Paragon SC on Jan 2, 2010 4:20 AM PST up reply actions

I agree with all of the above

My view on Lavin, and ucla fans may or may not agree with me, is that he underachieved with superior talent. He would win the games against the difficult teams, and then blow a game or four against the cupcakes. He had a knack for inexplicable timeouts when his team was shooting freethrows. I love it how he iced his own players at the line.

One more thing

The only time I bring up Sam Gilbert is to illustrate the hypocrisy of some fans that bash USC for Reggie Bush while extolling the virtues of John Wooden. ucla fans can’t call out Pete or USC unless they acknowledge that Coach Wooden allowed cheating as well.
