Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Jim Harbaugh's Matt Leinart Moment

Many of us hammered Matt Leinart for his comments after the MNC game against Texas when he said that even though USC lost he thought USC was the better team.

Whether or not that was the case the fact is that night they were not. There have been others who have done it as well.

Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh decides that he wants to be a part of this unique group...

Asked what it meant to him and Toby to have the Heisman vote so close:

"[...] It was biblical to me; Toby Gerhart was John the Baptist, out into the wilderness making things straight and being called back into the wilderness to bring Stanford football back. I thought he did everything he possibly could do to win that award; there was not one more thing Toby Gerhart could have done to win that award. But this is a vote and you have no control over voters and how that outcome is going to be. I think he made his case; here is a guy, who rushed for the most yards in college football, scores the most touchdowns in college football and does it against top 10 defenses. To us, Toby Gerhart is the Heisman Trophy winner."

Easy there Jimmy...John the Baptist?

What is he smoking??

Well, unfortunately that aint the way it turned out.

It is sad that this award has lost some of its luster when voters admit that they don't even watch the games. Maybe Gerhart deserved to win and maybe he didn't. You can't blame Gerhart he DID do what Harbaugh said he did but it wasn't enough to lock the award up.

But one thing is for sure...Gerhart wasn't the best that night just like USC was on that fateful night in 2006..

Yep, vintage Jimbo...

Why do you think even lowly San Diego State refused to hire this clown. I the Furd weren’t so cheap they would have looked elsewhere. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Jimbo has NFL written all over him and he’ll jump at the first offer he gets from the league. Still need to see what happens with Tom Cable. Hello? Al, is that you?

I don't agree with the content of the statement

But I do agree that Gerhardt should have won the award. He was the best RB in college football in my opinion. Looks like Alabama didn’t face that many top 10 defenses either.

Agree

Approx….

27 TDs to 15 TDs. 1700 yds to 1400 yds. The stats aren’t even close.

IF Toby wanted to get a heisman he should have never went to school not known for FB in the last two decades.

Really what has Stanford been known for Ladys Basketball and 2nd mens BB, some waterpolo and a crappy band.

Sorry, but the best of the candidates they had . . .....

. .. . .in NYC won the award. In saying that, Ingram:

A, had his stats unpadded- (249 of his yds some from 3 nonBCS cupcakes) vs. SEC competition.
B. there’s 2 backs he shares the rotation with, T Richardson is prolly a better back (fr) and Upchurch ate up some of his touches (situational). but hands down- Ingram is a way better back than Gerbhardt is or ever will be. (his mortality playing the he does- I’ll give him 4-7 yrs max of STARTING in the NFL.

Ingram was the best Heisman choice in NYC, and the best running back in NYC- was he the best Heisman choice the NYAthletic Club could have chosen. Dudes, get real- that’s what makes the award so fricking cool- it hardly ever is. But know this- they’ve hardly ever picked a tuna-can. It (award) will always be ‘one’ of the best of college football players.

It’s like arguing who’s the best rock and roll guitarist, yes?

[edit]

Toby has 4 – 7 years of starting in the NFL, and I personally thinks he doesn’t last that long. I doubt he’ll start- hope he does though, and I doubt he has any success in the NFL- hope he does though.

Really, I don’t see that much in his game other than brute force that he’s only really been able to shine and have magnified in this 2009 season. He’s the Suh of offense for 2009.

Could Toby be the next great white hope at running back in the NFL?

The problem he will have in the NFL is that he isn’t bigger than anyone and his speed is just normal in the NFL.

no

You’re dead on as usual so.cal. I wish him the best of luck, but RB’s are a disposable commodity in the NFL. The poor schlub won’t last four years, especially now that bit mouth Jimbo and The Furd painted a big fat target on his elite white azz.

My advice: Toby, go North of the border and become the greatest RB in the history of the CFL. The Loonie projects to be much stronger than the Dollar, so you’ll make up the difference salary just in the exchange rate. You’ll also be able to play for 10 years, and stand a far better chance of saving your brain, your legs and your sanity. Don’t be a fool. ¡Feliz Navidad Toby!

Loco you would think that if he is sooooo smart (being a Stanford man) he would play MLB.

But maybe he just isn’t that good but football over Baseball I would take BB 9-10 times.

You’ve got to be crazy or in serious need of money to be an NFL running back. Maybe the guy’s got a loose screw.

Good point

1) Alex Lifeson
2) Jack White
3) Stevie Ray Vaughan
4) Kirk Hammett
5) Duane Allman

It’s a tossup. Like trying to pick the Playmate of the Year. There’s something for everyone.

Eddie Van Halen (my 1st #1 all time favoritie group & guitarist)

And Rick Nielsen from Cheap Trick put on the best ‘lead guitarist’ shows I’ve ever seen. That man was an entertainer with a 4 arms it seemed?

Toby deserved it the Heisman, but not at the exclusion of Ingram. In other words- you can’t say that Ingram won it unfairly, or that Toby should have won it. Both deserved it, for different reasons. Only one person can though?

If Toby had won it, I’d be happy for him and disappointed that Ingram hadn’t. Toby’s had an incredible year and for him to have won it would have capped his season in a most remarkable way. (movie material, if you ask me- and a great story to boot!)
