GameDay Open Thread: USC vs. St. Mary's

USC Trojans vs. St. Mary's, December 23, 2009 2:00 PST, ESPNU

Despite all the doom and gloom stories that were printed before the season got underway, the current USC men's basketball has posted a 6-4 record thus far and is presently on a 3 game winning streak. Now, just think about that and smile for a brief moment.

But nevertheless, today's contest against a 10-1 St. Mary's team provides a significant challenge for the Trojans, as they must perform much better than they did during Tuesday's narrow 55-51 victory over Western Michigan. St. Mary's should also provide the Trojans with a far steeper challenge, as they presently have a top 20 Sagarin rating. Here's a closer look at the Gaels via the Trojans' official website:

SCOUTING THE GAELS -- Saint Mary's (10-1) defeated Northeastern 78-67 yesterday for its eighth consecutive win. SMC's only loss was a 72-70 setback vs. Vanderbilt on Nov. 20. The Gaels are led by center Omar Samhan who has averaged 21.5 points and 11.6 rebounds. Freshman Matthew Dellavedova is second on the team in scoring with a 13.9 average. Saint Mary's has averaged making 9.1 three-pointers per game, 15th in the nation. USC leads the all-time series with Saint Mary's 7-0, winning the last meeting 69-63 on Nov. 18, 2006.

Should be a competitive game. Yet, hopefully, it turns out in 'SC's favor.

Fight On! Beat the Gaels!

if stephenson and vucevic can limit the center of the gaels and get him into foul trouble… this game will be ours.. and lets hope the refs call some of those fouls they werent calling yesterday..

I'm not sold on St. Mary's at #20

They have beaten no one. Absolutely no one. Oregon is terrible. Hope SC shows up and takes care of business!

Grades have yet to be released for a significant portion of the student body (everybody who isn’t a football player, myself included) so his status is still pending.

Western Michigan killing Northeasern

The team we beat is killing the team St Mary’s beat. Is this a good sign?

Picks up a foul and now to the bench

Washington in the game.

Ha!

Yeah, this might be one of those “defensive minded” games.

Marcus Johnson

Looking more comfortable driving than earlier in the season. I’m also glad they started him instead of Leonard. O’Neill should take his time getting Washington worked into the starting lineup and figuring out what works. No problem with him coming off the bench cause he’ll always come to play.

His play the last 2 games seems improved

Maybe Gerrity has taken pressure off him?

Interesting Lineup

Gerrity-Smith-Lewis-Washington-Stepheson for a little bit

He can shoot the three, nice to see him with the green light, wasn’t shooting it at the start of the season

Louisiana Set on the Floor

Lewis-Simmons-Washington (with Gerrity and Stepheson)

by Laughing Stock on Dec 23, 2009 3:14 PM PST reply actions

Well....

33-23 USC at the half, I’ll take it. However, the Trojans and Gaels were trading baskets for the last 3 minutes or so, not a pace or style of game that favors SC. Its also annoying that Stepheson picked up a third foul, but it hurts a lot less with Leonard available to play. Interesting to see if the defense can hold the course and continue to lock down the perimeter.

by Laughing Stock on Dec 23, 2009 3:23 PM PST reply actions

Nice hustle on D

Samhan, the St. Mary’s big, is getting basically every easy shot opportunity blown up in his face. There was Washington’s block earlier, and now there was consecutive plays where easy baskets turned into the ball being forced out of bounds by Marcus Johnson and Kid Euro. St Mary’s kept possession, but SC is really making a statement defensively in the paint.

by Laughing Stock on Dec 23, 2009 3:49 PM PST reply actions

Needs to work on those post moves

A bit too hesitant, when he’s got position on his man he needs to receive the ball, put it on the floor at absolute once max and make a move towards the basket or pass it back out to the perimeter. Thats twice now that he’s dribbled towards the top of the key and then shuffled his feet on the inside.

USC struggling on offense

Our big men just can’t seem to keep their hands on the ball.

Donte

I’m happy with him spotting up and shooting, he seems to get in trouble when he over penetrates into the lane.

Nice game

Good first outing by Leonard, nice all around game by Kid Euro, and another impressive showing from Gerrity. The defense really carried the day though, and I actually would have liked to see Marcus Simmons on the court a little more. You could argue that USC has the two best OOC wins right now.

by Laughing Stock on Dec 23, 2009 4:39 PM PST reply actions

Tenn is by far #1

I think the next best two that I saw were Princeton and LSU, neither ranked. I forgot who beat them. Any other even decent OOC wins? Other than UCLA and the B12 challenge games, the PacX has played a bunch of nobodies, but I guess that’s the game in college hoops.

by DFWTrojan on Dec 23, 2009 4:54 PM PST up reply actions

St. Marys was 26 in Pomeroy's ratings

And had an RPI higher than 30. Its a pretty good win all things considered.

Got to love the effort this team puts out, they just don't stop playing hard nose DEE.

Wow to 2 blocks by Len really were epic and made those dude think twice.
