Tim Floyd was Undermined

Bumped - I may have some thoughts on this later...P

EDIT BELOW THE FOLD...

Timmy was sold down the river.  LA Times Story  Most of us nailed this one.  AD Garrett cuts off personal communication......sound familiar?  AD Garrett releases LOIs w/out consulting the head coach.....we suspected this?!?! AD Garrett leaves a program and a successful coach blowing in the wind in the face of public scrutiny.....obviously!  AD Garrett is instrumental in allowing a barrage of unsubstantiated Internet rumors to destroy a great Trojan recruiting class and bring down the rapidly rising Trojan basketball program.....yes!

And, to add salt to our wounds, Timmy proclaims his innocence.  Many of us with managerial business experience know that you can't successfully run a business without clear lines of communication.  We know that employees do not want to work for an employer who does not have their back.

Star-divide

AD Garrett is in way over his head.  He simply does not have the experience to run a business as large and complex as the USC AD.  His bumbles, stumbles, and mismanagement have caused harm to USC's reputation, millions in lost hoops revenue in a brand new arena, and cast USC as an incompetent administrator of high level sports programs.

It is time for AD Garrett to step down.  If any NCAA institutional control violations are alleged from the NCAA investigation, when and if it ever concludes, it is my sincere hope that MIKE GARRETT IS FIRED WITHIN 24 HOURS!!!!!!

EDIT BY PARAGON SC - Here is a little more in for in the Press-Enterprise...

Floyd said he "took the high road" because his three assistants were 17 days shy of getting their contracts renewed and he knew if he blasted USC they would not be retained, as they have been, under new coach Kevin O'Neill.

[...]

Floyd said after that, "word got back to me" that Garrett had told the board that he was one of three USC coaches on the chopping block "if things didn't improve in their programs." He said that's why he checked out the coaching opening at Arizona.

Floyd said he left USC when he realized recruits were being released from their scholarship commitments "without consulting me."

"Based on 33 years in this business, to not have any more support ... If I hadn't been financially secure, I'd have fought them and made them fire me."

Now, I am not going to give Floyd a pass on his association with Guillory. The guy had a past...at USC...so he should have been persona non grata.

It looks like Floyd fell on his sword to protect his assistants...That is admirable, but it is pretty clear to me that Floyd knew all was lost when Garrett started letting recruits out of their LOI's without Floyd's consent (if we are to believe that). I could see Garrett making the statement that if things didn't improve Floyd could be fired but to undermine him like this is unconscionable.

The other interesting thing is that the NCAA investigator in the LAT article essentially admitted that they sacrificed the tOSU hoops program to spare the football program. Man, the NCAA is one F***ed up institution.

I can really see Floyd's account as being accurate. I mean Garrett is the same same guy who Fired John Robinson by voice mail right?

With a new university president coming in next fall

That could provide a scenario in which Garrett could be fired, especially if the investigation is completed around the beginning of the new president’s term. Of course, there are a lot of variables that could go into that decision (especially depending on who the new president is), but if severe sanctions are handed down, it would certainly make the job easier.

I’ve been pretty clear about my opinion of Mike Garrett’s management skills. If that story about Tim Floyd is remotely true, it only confirms how much Garrett is in over his head.

I read an interview with President Sample wherein he said that his main regret over his first year in the job was getting involved at the wrong times with coaching / AD hiring decisions. I strongly suspect he is deliberately leaving this to his successor, and rightly so.

If SC gets hammered for violations, Garrett has to go. No ifs, buts, or maybes, because institutional control issues are fundamentally on his head.

Fire AD Garrett Now?

What if the investigation does clear USC of any wrongdoing? With a good coach KO in place, the grounds for firing may be diminished. Why not fire AD Garrett now? Just wishful thinking mid-school year with the president search inconclusive. Not going to happen now. Too bad.

“I find it interesting,” Floyd said, "USC hasn’t self-reported (any violations) and has retained his entire coaching staff.

Floyd said that he has cooperated with both the NCAA investigators and the federal prosecutors in the investigation into Guillory’s charity foundation.

“I don’t feel we did anything wrong,” Floyd said.

If SC gets hammered for violations

Conditional statement.

I wouldn’t have a problem with Garrett making a dignified exit, but a messy ouster now probably wouldn’t get us much. Aside from the rest of the conference being massively entertained.

Excellent post Tex

We knew this was a big setup from the start. Mike Garrett is gutless. I don’t know if you saw, but when he handed MG President Sample the SC Letterman jacket honoring him on his retirement, the Boss declined to put it on, hmmm.

BTW, that jackhole desmo pilloried you mercilessly over this, but don’t hold your breath for an apology.

My take was

that because of President Sample’s declining health (he has quite a noticeable shake/jitter) they thought it would be best to simply hand him the jacket rather than risk embarrassment by taking 20 seconds to put it on him. At least that’s what it looked like to me – I don’t think Garrett was trying to send any sort of “message” to Sample at all.

This is what I have been waiting for

Floyd standing up and issuing a denial of the allegations against him. I heard from coach Johnson personally that the allegations against Floyd were untrue, and that Garrett basically sacrificed him, now this article basically corroborates that. Floyd has an interesting point about his staff being retained despite the allegations of cheating. If they were a cheating staff in the eyes of USC, they would have all been let go. Floyd took the buyout. USC bought his silence, and he is the scapegoat. This whole situation is just sad.

I agree that the basketball program/coach

were sacrificed in this situation to protect the crystal football of power.

Sucks but there you are.

and if true that no self reported violations or internal investigations are happening, then the Athletic Dept is just not managing itself with respect to the rules. The Div I rules are so arcane and byzantine that a school cannot but have a few minor violations each year that are self-reported and forgotten by the NCAA.

Tsk, tsk, tsk!

Now Timmeh isn’t without his own faults and transgressions- Paragon hits it square: Coach Floyd mismanaged Guillory’s access! That, in and of itself, is grounds for some kind of NCAA investigation. I mean, how retarded was THAT? Now, that doesn’t necessarily mean that skullduggery was afoot and afield in The Galen Center, but. . . . .inquiring minds want to know- in no uncertain terms, what is up with that? And how, if any, compliance was given for Guillory’s access. Coach Tim Floyd couldn’t have universally decided on Guillory’s access, it had to come from the top; down.

That all being said, we here at CC haven’t wavered in our love and support of Coach Floyd. It was one of the saddest days on record here at CC when all that stuff was going down. I’ll never forget the comments and responses- all wishing Coach Floyd well, and all holding out hope he wasn’t bailing on a sinking ship that he had a hand in downing. Yes, the ship was sinking. No, he wasn’t bailing on his players, his coaches, or his team.

He fell on his sword.

Still love the man. For all that he did and what he stands for. As for Desmo? He has some degree of hatred for the “liar” and “shaman” (whatever that means?) and for being the worse DI head football coach. (all Desmo’s colorization of Coach Floyd, not mine). Maybe he is some, part or all of it. These new news revelations paint quite a different picture.

If Floyd had been at the game Saturday night, the proto-scuffle would have simmered down a lot faster, I think we can say that much safely.

He's good at those, hah?

He coulda might’ve saved that ref from being knocked to the ground? Naaaah, come to think of it, Coach didn’t get along to well with cats in stripes, cats with whistles, – officials, in general.

“Proto-scuffle”? Yeah, sure why not? I like that! He would have tried to stop all that "frontin’ " and "dawgin’ "when there were “alleged invectives” that were supposedly thrown about.

Meh

If there is a lack of institutional control, then Garrett should be fired. I think he should be fired for his complete lack of knowledge of how to successfully build a winning B-Ball program — i.e., you have to be more scrupulous than football because with football the issues are primarily booster driven (not in every case, but in 95% the trouble comes from boosters) but with basketball there is this entire layer of oozing semi-pro slime and corruption BEFORE the kids are even old enough to attend college. Not to understand that is negligent.

But before y’all burn Garrett at the stake and cannonize Floyd as “St. Timothy, Our Martyr of Troy,” remember Floyd’s sometimes difficulties with ethics and the truth. For example:

“This is my last job,” followed by feelers to Indiana, LSU, Memphis and even flying out to Tucson . . .

Percy Miller, hiding Hackett and Polee from the scholarship limits (thought it’s not like SC is the only school that does that) . . .

Lying about Mayo’s broken jaw . . .

Similar issues at Iowa State (Hey, the NCAA even named a rule after him!), Chicago, New Orleans . . .

So far, this story is nothing more than Floyd’s retort in a “He Said She Said”. To me, it seems just as unlikely that an NCAA investigator told him to lawyer up (and then use the way to pat example of Ohio State), as it is that Floyd delivered cash to Louis Johnson like some two-bit mobster on The Soprano’s. I dunno, maybe she did as this. He did give a name. Perhaps Pucin will try to get a comment from the investigator . . .

My guess is that Floyd’s still smarting about USC’s (and Sample’s) iron-clad (and very questionable) policy about not commenting during a pending investigation. I guess we will see when the report comes out to find out what exactly was said and known.

Hackett's Broken Jaw

a) Floyd wasn’t there
b) Hackett and Mayo always held that it was an accident.
WTF does Floyd have to do with that?
Floyd’s dumbest mistake was to not kick Guillory and Johnson the hell out of Galen. As to the rest of the nonsense, you articulated it well… Meh.
It’s time for Mike Garrett to follow xCTF’s lead and fall on his sword. Funny thing is, MG got lucky again when he blundered into hiring KO, and he will be getting credit for hiring him. Go figure.

I liked Tim Floyd a lot

And maybe if the university would have supported him then USC could have a Top 10 team right now. Oh well, as they say shit happens (or maybe happened) and I have been pleasantly surprised with how Kevin O’Neill has handled things so far.

FIght On Tim, some of my most memorable moments at SC have been watching your teams play!
