UCLA's Really Crappy Week

First the Dorrellian losing streak in football, which was followed by the basketball meltdown, then they get pwned by Pete Carroll on Saturday. Today we have this (via LAT):

UCLA basketball: Starting center Drew Gordon leaves team December 1, 2009 |  2:09 pm

UCLA center Drew Gordon has left the UCLA basketball team and will transfer at the end of the quarter.

Fabforum Gordon was a starter averaging 11.2 points and 5.3 rebounds in 23-plus minutes a game

Coach Ben Howland declined to give a specific reason, explaining that it resulted from a series of conversations with the player over the past weeks.

"This is not a spur-of-the-moment thing," Howland said.

The announcement, made at the coach's weekly press conference on the UCLA campus, follows a disappointing holiday weekend for the Bruins, who lost all three of their games at the 76 Classic in Anaheim.

Freshman Reeves Nelson will fill some of the gap created by Gordon's departure.

"He has a lot to learn and he knows this," Howland said. "This is going to increase his playing time dramatically."

It’s hard to replace 23 minutes, especially at Center.

Battle of the suck basketball teams

I think im having dejavu. It won’t be decided on who is the better team, it will be who is the suckier team.

We have a better coach :-)

Glad you see that Loco so many don't in LA and he hates to lose to Ucla.

He can coach both offense and defense, and is a great recruiter and driver. He doesn’t recruit by star ratings but by what he sees of a recruit. This one thing really made me see who KO is, remember when he first got here he went visit Nicola in europe to make sure he didn’t lose him. In the end he picked up a center to boot, and I am sure more will follow.

28---7 2nd & 11 Barkley to Williams, so please Bru-Babes call time out again.

nah, i’ll still take CBH over CKO.

It’s the experience level I question. We don’t have a PG

A down year for the Bruins

couldn’t come at a better time for our Trojans. We might be able to accelerate gains in recruiting with the door left open by the Bruins.

Just hope the Wildcats struggle too.

Very Nice!

Let’s hope that AD MG doesn’t release him from his LOI after signing.

Also this week in schadenfraude…. We had our moment watching the Stanford game. I guess this is what is referred to as the other shoe dropping.

Go Bruins!

For what its worth

I hope Toby Gerhardt wins the Heisman. I doubt that he has a chance, but he has had a better year than Ingram, and should be the top vote getter at running back. Colt McCoy wins it in my opinion.

by frak on Dec 1, 2009 6:49 PM PST up reply actions

Gerhart...

Is an absolute freight train from hell. Unfortunately though you’re right. Due to hype it’ll be McCoy that takes it.

by DannyJay01 on Dec 1, 2009 6:56 PM PST up reply actions

If McCoy wins it...

…it’ll be a lifetime achievement award, spun as him “hitting his stride at the right time.” I can’t argue with it too much, especially after the beastly performance he put on against the Aggies, but I don’t think that he’s been the best player in CFB this season. One hell of a player, though.

by Boy Howdy on Dec 2, 2009 7:51 AM PST up reply actions

Anone but Tebow

I think Colt is deserving, especially for the career stats. Hope Toby goes to NYC, but the 4 losses keep him from winning.

But, I hate this populatity contest. Best QB #s are Kellen Moore, Boise St. Something like 35 TDs w/ 3 INTs and 3,500 yards. Blows the field away. And, BSU is an undefeated BCS bowl team. Yet, Kellen Moore will not even be invited to NYC.

The Heisman is a complete joke.

Wow I don't know what happen but that is weird, maybe he just had it with Bens offense.

He really has no shot outside of 6 feet and maybe he doesn’t want to play Center, he is a PF all the way.

6ft?!???!! try 5

Still sucks to see him go. He was the best performer. Hopefully this will serve as a cataylst of some sort for the rest of the team….

Any bruins have ears as to why Gordon is leaving?

Just curious. He seemed to be a good fit in Westwood.

by frak on Dec 2, 2009 12:07 AM PST reply actions

Nobody really knows

But as always, some like to pretend. A general list of possible problems that have been raised, some of which may or may not be mutually exclusive:

1. Gordon wanted to play in an up-tempo offense and realized UCLA was not the place for him.
2. Gordon wanted to play in an up-tempo offense and tried to get the other players to force Howland’s hand. Howland wasn’t pleased.
3. Gordon gave Howland an ultimatum wrt the offense. Howland wasn’t pleased.
4. Gordon and others on the UCLA team have been encouraged by certain people in Philadelphia to leave UCLA.
5. Gordon was upset about the team losing games it shouldn’t have [his dad’s opinion].
6. Gordon had been considering the move for weeks and game results weren’t really a factor [his mom’s opinion].
7. Gordon had been suspended from practice for 2 days this week [appears to be established fact], and decided to quit.

I feel like I’m missing some, but as you can see little is established right now and it’s hard to see much emerging as fact in the near future.

He seemed to be a good fit in Westwood.

I’m sure this will be a topic of intense debate until Howland is again able to put a good team on the court. IMO, he was a good fit in terms of playing style. He’s an athletic defensive player with a never-say-die attitude. His biggest visible problem has been discipline. He doesn’t play patient defense, he frequently tries to do to much on offense, and apparently he never bought into Howland’s system. If he had, he could’ve become a very good player. Since he didn’t, it’s better for everyone that he’s leaving.

by SuperBruinMan on Dec 2, 2009 1:25 AM PST up reply actions

Oh, duh

Gordon supposedly wanted to play power forward despite his general inability to shoot. There was also apparently some on court tension between Howland and Gordon on Sunday, which probably prompted the suspension.

by SuperBruinMan on Dec 2, 2009 2:08 AM PST up reply actions

Phillie?

Rumors on where he is going? Villanova or Temple? UPenn? Drexel?

by DFWTrojan on Dec 2, 2009 9:44 AM PST up reply actions

I heard from a bRuin friend

that Gordon liked to freelance on the court, had terrible shot selection, and was seen cussing out coaches during a game.

Rumored destinations right now are SJSU, SDSU, and UNLV.

[DELETED ZOMG NO POLITICS]

According to his parents

He’ll stay out west and won’t go to a Pac-10 school.

The person in Philadelphia is Jrue Holiday.

by SuperBruinMan on Dec 2, 2009 11:40 AM PST up reply actions

Philly - Talking about Jrue Holliday

There were some rumors floating around that Holliday was encouraging Gordon to leave because Howland would never play an up-and-down offensive style. I’m not a big Jrie Holliday fan myself, but even that struck me as a little odd.

Ariza also refused to play for Howland

and he seems to be doing alright. This new breed of recruit would have abandoned even St. John The Wooden.

wants to learn how to play defense anymore.

Defensive basketball sucks, it's boring as all hell (see UCLA)

The NCAA should get over itself and ban zone defenses once and for all. Let kids have their fun, the pros can teach ’em how to play defense.

Gordon probably not the only one leaving Bobo and Hunnycutt will go too.

I can see JMM leaving, but I don’t think TH will go. Bobo was a 5-star elite recruit who is looking for major minutes. Problem is his playing style doesn’t fit into UCLA’s defense. TH is a blue-collar hardnosed player who I think will do well under CBH’s leadership.

Guess we’ll have to see
