SoCal Sports Hub Calls out Bruins Nation in Response to being Banned
Here's something I wanted to bring to the attention of the readers of Conquest Chronicles. It's an article published at my blog - SoCal Sports Hub.com earlier today:
Bruins Nation Apparently Doesn't Like Opinions
I have always been of the belief that despite being a USC student and diehard fan that I have the capability of rationally analyzing a sporting event even if the Trojans are in the middle of it. Of course, I have my biases, but don’t all writers? Sports Illustrated’s Stewart Mandel is a Northwestern graduate, SI.com’s Arash Markazi is a USC alumnus, and ESPN’s Gene Wojciechowski is a Tennessee grad. So do the simple facts that I happen to take classes at the University of Southern California and root for the Trojans on Saturdays thus bar me from expressing opinions on the inner-workings of college football? I like to think that it doesn’t, but if you’re an editor at the Bruins Nation, it apparently makes me unreadable.
To put this all into proper context, I happened to read an article at the Bruins Nation.com earlier this morning entitled: “Remembering Those Images For Next 370 Days” in which it discusses how close the Bruins were to overtaking the Trojans in last night’s 28-7 defeat while optimistically looking forward to next year’s contest at the Rose Bowl. After reading the post, I took offense to the writer’s tendency to look back at the game and suggest that UCLA would have easily won provided certain events did not occur such as Kevin Prince’s interception in the first half and the generally poor officiating. Therefore, I decided to post my thoughts on the article in the comments section:
Whenever I read game recaps here, especially when it comes to USC-UCLA contests, it is flooded with the word “if” throughout. I mean seriously, get over it:
“If not for Prince’s ill advised throw the score would have been tied at 0-0 at half time (at least 3-0 in our favor if the referees weren’t persuaded by the Pom Pom’s lobbying and the homer announcers egging it on television).”
Ya, well if Pete Rose didn’t gamble on the Reds and baseball, he’d probably be in the hall-of-fame. If Texas didn’t have Vince Young in the 2006 Rose Bowl, USC would probably still be selling three peat national title shirts in the student bookstore. If Kobe and Shaq hadn’t argued as much and had become good friends instead, the Lakers probably would have a few more championship banners hanging in the rafters at Staples Center.
The fact is that none of that happened. Prince made an errant throw and he paid for it. Just because you don’t like the outcome and it may have been a boneheaded play, does not give you the right to totally discredit it. It’s a completely faulty argument and silly to rationalize a recap on it. ‘If he didn’t make that dumb play, UCLA would have still been it.” Well, of course they would still be in it.
But the fact of the matter is that it happened and you need to move on. As for the poor officiating give me a break. The Trojans had 12 penalties compared to the Bruins’ 5. UCLA lost this football game because they turned the football over. Period. You cannot go on the road, particularly in a rivalry game, and expect to win when your offense turns the ball over 4 times. It’s just not going to happen.
Just two minutes, after posting this I received a message that read “you are banned from Bruins Nation: you can browse the blog, but you can’t participate.” (note: I was not able to recover the full entity of my comments post because it was immediately removed from the site) A few minutes following, the site editor Nestor quickly posted another message:
Attention Trojan Jackholes posting in this thread
Read the byline of this blog (if you can read):“Blog Of The Bruins, By The Bruins, For The Bruins”
So get lost. We don’t want you here in the coming days.
Well, I would normally address Nestor or a similar site editor via private e-mail after a banning like this, but I feel this quick tendency of Bruins Nation to ban people with dissenting opinions needs to be brought to the forefront of the blogosphere, especially at this particular moment. Nowhere in the course of my argument did I unreasonably criticize UCLA for the sake of “smack talk.” I merely sought to raise the point that too often fans, particularly those hailing from Westwood, cast aside a loss because of a few inopportune events. (In this case, Prince’s interceptions and a few “non-calls” by the officials.) But in the end, the bottom line is that if you want to post at BN, you must be in total agreement with popular held beliefs by Bruin fans:
Any insult or any comment that would be perceived as an insult, attack or a lecture to the moderators could be subjected deletion, warning or subsequent banning. The moderators reserve the right to delete any post or comment that is deemed not appropriate for Bruins Nation. Also, we will not tolerate any lectures to moderators on how they should run this community.
Also note (Trojans pay close attention to this) if you insult UCLA or anyone/anything associated with UCLA you could be subjected to immediate banning. There are lots of message boards to engage in cheap trash/smack talk.
After reading my remarks thoroughly, I am still searching for the part, where I deliberately and viciously attacked the site editors. Yes, I did raise a somewhat controversial opinion in regards to how the UCLA community should be handling the loss to USC, but I failed to deliberately insult UCLA or its fans for the sole purpose of inciting a flame war in the comments section. Look, my sole intent was to raise a viewpoint, and within minutes, the thought policeNestor removed the comment and had me banned from the site because my opinions did not conform to the Bruins Nation’s commonly accepted beliefs.
At the end of the day, a sports blog is supposed to not only provide news regarding a particular team or sport but also foster structured and rational debate regarding a particular set of issues. This circumstance suggests to me that UCLA fan blogs such as Bruins Nation are not willing to accept that notion. In fact, they are eager to go about and do whatever is necessary to dispel of it and promote their own agenda – UCLA athletics. While I understand that a fan blog would be eager to highlight its own team, it is also important to realize that it needs to be open to dissenting opinions provided they are articulated in a coherent and reasonable manor. It has become quite evident that BN is not open to this concept as evident by their banning and public embarrasment of me (see: the Trojan jackhole reference and if you can read inference).
So, in regards to the future, I implore blogs and websites with similar community guidelines as Bruins Nation, to lift these restrictions and allow for a greater debate among fans. Because at the end of the day, there is no point of a website’s existence if it does not allow for opinions to be shared, as fans should not and eventually cannot be silenced.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Conquest Chronicles' writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Conquest Chronicles' writers or editors.

Yo Joey!
That place sucks. It makes me embarrassed to be a Bruin. It is ridiculously thin-skinned and mean-spirited (a term I HATE but one that fully applies), and Nestor, who runs the joint, is the worst of all possible fans. In addition to being an idiot he is utterly humorless. Most a**holes redeem themselves on occasion with a dollop of humor, or a dash of wit, or even self-deprecation when wrong. Not so Nestor. Those “terms of use” that you cited are the single most damning indictment of the mindset at that cesspool. You would be far better off going to bruinzone.com or even bruinreportonline.com for biased but more open commentary than what you get at Nestor’s place.
I obviously didn’t read your post, but I could not agree more-we turned the ball over four times-one was a INT for TD and another gave USC an extremely short field to work with. With an offense as mediocre as ours, we were going to have trouble moving the ball, even against a struggling USC defense-UCLA is not another Oregon or Stanford. We needed to play nearly error-free ball in order to beat a quality opponent on the road. We did not. We deserved to lose because USC was the better team. That was the opinion of the bettors before the game, it was my opinion and all this c*** about what happened at the end of the game is simply obscuring the fact that USC was better, again. UCLA had chances to really make a game of it-but as one might expect with a team fielding a very young OL and a freshman QB, we fumbled away those chances.
At least there were no serious injuries that I could see-I believe our center returned after having his leg rolled up on, Price was back in after his leg injury and McKnight seems to be OK. Good luck with your posting and don’t worry about those no-class clowns.
Bruins Nation is best appreciated from afar
Its like the classic communist political discussion, “I love the state!”, “no you don’t because I love the State!”. The best threads on BN are the ones where some poor UCLA fan questions the Mods opinion about something — its hilarious. Its not a community, its more a collective. Always on message, all working for the common good, as long as that common good is defined by Nestor.
After seeing Nestor in that video
I understand now why he is a control freak on his blog. He looks to be a fairly timid guy in real life. His blog is the only place that he can throw what little weight he has around.
@sharpie20
I hid the link you provided. We’ve been asked in the past to keep Nestor’s real name off the blog and even though it’s out there, we’re trying to honor that.
Apologies for applying that degree of editorial control, but it keeps the internal SBN complaints under control.
You could tell he looked like that before the video.
He comes off as someone that was picked on a lot as a child and now wants to exact revenge from behind a keyboard.
I’ve said it before and I said it again – ignore the guy. He’s inconsequential. And thank you’re lucky stars you’re not him. Do you think a man with that much hate can function normally?
Joey how is it going you have now join the many.
You got to understand those people over there are still wearing their Blue and Gold Diapers, and they haven’t changed them in year.
OHHHHHHHHH the Stench
The truth is Lavin was an Okay coach but I liked him because Bibby was beating him. I have known Ben since 1978 and when he got to Ugla I knew it was going to be a battle in BB. But know we got Kevin and I think he is better than my friend, and after 3 years we will know. GO Trojans

It was probably the "you need to move on" line
I’m a Bruin fan and I agree with what you’re saying about the ridiculousness of the head honcho (or whatever) over there, but I can see how that message could be viewed as a bit acrimonious. Or maybe he just saw your signature and banned you before reading the message. Either way, it’s not like you’d want to post there again, anyway.
I can't say I'm too surprised about the high number of bannings on BruinsNation
Because in the past, when I’ve made a comment involving an opposing opinion to Nestor, he usually called it bullshit and told me to go some other site if I don’t like it. He probably never banned me because it only happened a few times (most often during the Jrue Holiday debates, but thats an entirely different story) and also because I’m still a diehard Bruin fan.
I still go to BruinsNation because its nice to see a blog where there are so many enthusiastic fans and because its still a good source of everything Bruin related, but I agree that some of the people take things wayyyyy too seriously, really hate seeing opposing opinions, and oftentimes simply come off as d-bags. Thats one of the reasons I frequent so many other blogs from other teams; it can be a refreshing change.
However, oftentimes I have noticed on other blogs that for every 1 rival or opponent posting something in a sportsmanlike fashion, there can be as many as 5 others that simply come off as rude, unintelligent, condescending, etc etc. So I’m not too surprised that there are some blogs that choose to get rid of those opinions altogether. Its not the best scenario, but I guess some people really don’t want to deal with them.
There are some really good posters on BN
but seems like they are trying to stay within Mushroom’s blog-nazi boundaries when it comes to voicing their opinions.
It’s sad to see a guy like Ryan waste all his talent covering UCLA athletics by sucking up to Mushroom & Co. He could have started more civil site with less SC obsession and more insight into UCLA sports. Mushroom is not very knowledgable when it comes to actual facts (he often screws up with details and can’t offer much X&O insights or analysis beyond what’s written in the press) and guys like Ryan fill that void with solid coverage… Unfortunately he chose the wrong community.
Ding, ding, ding, we have a winner!
If Ryan starts his own SBN site he will develop a huge following very quickly. SBN is a big place and there’s room to put up a Pac-10 site along the lines of http://www.rivalryesq.com . The non-psychotic Bruins that visit us should get in touch with him so everybody can hang out.

Ryan is OK but if you disagree with him his Nestor comes out, believe me.
He seems to think he knows everything about sports, just a youngster that he is sometimes much hate. He does comment on lakers blog but not much, but I am sure he could tell you all about lakers even from the sports arena days RIGHT THATS THE TICKET.

Saw this little tidbit on BN
Here are the bruin corrected stats in the game. According to them USC only force 1 turnover.
Alright, let’s grab the real "ucla13_usc9’s" turnover-biased defensive stats:
UCLA’s defense allowed 93 yards, 7 points, forced 1 turnover
That discounts turnovers (fumbles, INT’S, and turnovers on down). That is a performance for the ages.
Allowing U$C to score a mere touchdown when handed fair terms is absolutely amazing. This loss, contrary to the beliefs of some, was all on the offense.
The box score says
That USC had 206 yards passing and 130 yards rushing for a total of 336 yards on offense.
Nice how the bruinsnation guys trimmed that down to 93 yards allowed.
Whatever floats their boat I guess.
Remember you are taking about a 20 year old who's goes by the name of 13-9, I am sure he has underwear with that logo.

How sad
Can you imagine reducing the entire achievements of the program that you spend so much time rooting for down to a single game? It’s actually amusing how much those people obsess about USC while we really only think about them one week out of the year.
I love the line
about “fair terms.” What does “fair terms” mean? I guess this bruin wants the opposing team to be fair, and not intercept passes, or cause fumbles. When the opposing offense gets the ball deep in your territory its not fair to count any points against the defense, because holding the offense to a field goal instead of a touchdown should not be expected.
I love how these guys are calling out Pete for “crying” about Harbaugh’s 2 point conversion, and then proceed to whine at an extremely high level.
Call it bruin logic

About Bruinsnation
Honestly I can really appreciate the fervor that their fans have over there. You can tell that they have a lot of enthusiasm for their school and many are true die hards.
However, I feel like too often the criticism goes too far and gets a bit out of control, and there does seem to be some definite censorship and “control” (for lack of a better word) going on over there. I have, however, been able to post from time to time an occasional dissenting opinion but you really have to be extremely careful about word choice and what you are saying. with all of that being said though, although the community is not quite as intense over here I really think Paragon’s and DC Trojan’s style of moderating is much better and fosters much more reasonable debate and discussion, so kudos to them.
Actually, as a bit of a curiosity, I posted a comment on that same story saying something to the effect that I felt both coaches were kind of in the wrong and both passed up opportunities to be a lot more gracious. It was deleted, but I wasn’t banned. I wonder if I am the only overtly pro-SC person to have a comment deleted and not be banned outright.
Out of control?
I mean “Pete Carroll should burn in hell” isn’t too far, is it? Maybe it was “I hope Pete Carroll dies in a fire” that you’re talking about.
Honestly, don’t these guys realize how much they embarrass themselves and their school?
hahahaha
did they really write that? Jeez, its just a football game after all.

Those were just two that I remember off the top of my head when I went over there to read the rants Saturday night. I can’t bring myself to go back. I just get a disgusted feeling over there. Those people are truly pathetic.

Uh, bwren kinda cut up those quotes there to make people look worse than they really are. This is what was actually posted:
I hope Pete Carroll dies in a fire of embarrassment for wearing white after labor day
Pete Carroll should burn in hell for combining a horizontally striped tie with a vertically stripped shirt.
As you can see, its not as much about the football games, but more about just how poor Carroll is with sartorical choices. And if theres one thing that football fans get REALLY passionate about, its fashion.

BN > *
And don’t you forget it. I mean after all, “if you’re not part of the solution, then you’re part of the problem.” Right?
Forget the UCLA Athletics department, Dan Guerrero, BruinZone, et al. If you disagree with Lord Nestor, then you are a Trojan sympathizer and a deserter.
The funniest thing is that any forum of blog is public, and as such should be able to take the disagreements, criticisms, and opinions that it opens itself to. BN is NOT that. A perfect example of Bruins on Bruins:
http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=12&f=1738&t=4966677
Out the door goes Donahue, Dorrell, and even “Ben Ball Warriors” for playing like ass in the beginning of the season. I’m sorry but this isn’t your 1950s UCLA football or 1970s UCLA basketball. You, like any other sports team, will have your crap years. Deal with it.
Hell your whole demon nazi crew went after the current student body for failing to defend the Bruin. OH WELL. These things happen (blue tainted Tommy Trojan of 2008 anyone?)
I applaud the many Bruins who live their lives according to their happiness and not hatred. I’ve had Bruin girlfriends int he past who take both great heart and enjoyment of the rivalry games. I have Bruin friends that do the same and even work at the opposing school. Even the Bruins at Conquest Chronicles are A-OK! But perish the thought (and probably the life) of anyone that thinks it can coexist.
After all, South Central, Figueroa Tech, UCLA jr runs a scumbag, classless, thug ridden program, it can never touch the celestial blessed grounds of that which is called UCLA, or in his mind, the University of Nestor.
Hypocrisy runs rampart at that site. We do it: classlessness They do it: Defending honor.
Please. SBN needs to take a closer look at how these places should be run; if not the in the interest of everyone, then at least it should be revamped to reflect a flagship image of what SBN would want of all its constituents.
On that note, I will post this little gem I found by Lord N himself:
On the same point I think Bruin4ever is on point in admiring the mindset Pete Carroll shows when going for it on 4th down. Of course Carroll takes gambles are calculated. I don’t believe they are reckless decisions as many UCLA fans would like to think they are. I think when Carroll goes for it he is doing to grab a choke hold of the momentum and optimize it for his team. He also does it from POV to send a clear message to his team about how much he trusts them. And note he is doing it this year as a true freshman at QB.
Hate as much as you want, it will only make you look worse.
I enjoy reading some of the BN stuff
The articles about ucla athletics are informative, and actually have some good insight. The USC articles are so over the top that they are mostly funny. The only posts that I believe are truly outright wrong are things like keeping Hershel Dennis’ name on their list of USC crimes. Hershel was 100% cleared of all wrong doing, and BN seems to think its right to associate him with allegations of rape that are 100% proven false. There are a few crimes that I believe you just don’t lay on innocent people, and rape is one of them.
Well in Dennis' case
the alleged victim recanted her accusation. A year after the incident, she admitted that she was never assaulted. Hershel still is on the laundry list though, and probably always will be.
But why in God Name make a Laundry List what will it accomplish, will it change anything.
The world and our country is a mess why bring that stuff into play, that is the way of an politician. THey try in put facts together to smear their competition but this is college sports, there is no vote here. A person who lives by these standards is pretty messed up, and one I would not associate with or let my kids get involved with. He or she is not a leader they are think tank muck rakers, nothing ever good to say unless it benefits them. But I guess there has to be someone to lead to bottom feeders.

I follow sports to cheer on the teams that I root for. It’s just a hobby that I enjoy. To spend that much time worrying about your team’s rivals is pathetic. Why turn your hobby into something negative that just brings you grief? Go spend your time on something else and quit being so damn angry.
