GameDay Open Thread ucla @ USC

UCLA Bruins at USC Trojans, Nov 28, 2009 7:00 PM PST

Michael Conroy - AP

I am going to put this up early so that I can watch some of the other games today.

Finally...

It is here. Time to get it on.

I am completely baffled and how which way this one will go. I am not necessarily buying that ucla has the momentum here. I am also not buying that all the pressure is on Pete Carroll as I read elsewhere. If anything I think its the other way around. Pete Carroll has not made any proclamations like Slick Rick did last night...SC has struggled the past few weeks so we know what we are getting with this team.

This is the only game that Slick Rick cares about. It has been his sole reason for all of his bluster.

So we will see how it goes.

Join Us here...leave your comments and rants here...

FIGHT ON!

Conquest

The defense needs to step up, big time today, can not allow ucla’s anemic offense to look like Oregon or Stanford. Mr. Mays you came back for your senior year, this game can save it. As for Mr. Barkley, he needs to play like he did at OSU, ist half at ND and KAL, otherwise we are in for a long night and a long year.

that would just about do it. Don’t let Barkeley throw to ATV or Moore.

Here’s to hoping UCLA’s DLine & Linebackers pick up the run D!

Good Luck!

Even though it would be better for my beloved Bears for you guys to gag, I still find myself rooting for you tonight. Just like I’m currently rooting for the Furd.

I’m so confused. Damn you CC people for being cool!

Good luck and enjoy the game, guys.

Not a bad possession...

time to punt it away though

USC Sports Talk, contributor http://uscsportstalk.blogspot.com

by mel kiper fan on Nov 28, 2009 7:18 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Oh for crying out loud. There’s not need to be in a giving mood with the extra penalty before the punt.

by DC Trojan on Nov 28, 2009 7:19 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Given special teams this season, I think the touchback is not the worst possible result.

Nice read on that “wild cheetah” play – better than the previous gain for the 1st down.

Man the linebackers looked slow on that reverse

by warchild13 on Nov 28, 2009 7:23 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Nice tackle by Pinkard.

by DC Trojan on Nov 28, 2009 7:24 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Smart decision to take the fair catch – there were some Bruins approaching at speed.

by DC Trojan on Nov 28, 2009 7:25 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

A bit surprised Williams is rturning punts. Figured they want him healthy on O. Odd to risk him and his ankle.

by warchild13 on Nov 28, 2009 7:26 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I’d rather see them keep him for general offense, but what do I know?

Well that worked well. Another 3 and out.

At this rate, both defenses are going to be on oxygen before the half.

Barkley got happy feet again.

by warchild13 on Nov 28, 2009 7:28 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

You know what, if that was a busted play, I’d rather see a few yards and punting than a sack or a stupid INT.

by DC Trojan on Nov 28, 2009 7:30 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Dude I realize that there are 18 reasons I should root for UCLA. Cal needs USC to lose another game to stay above them and their very enticing bowl finances. Its, yknow, fucking USC.

But I so dont want to make UCLA fans happy (and esp. that happy) for obvi reasons that Im conflicted.

Hello, gentlemen. I just popped by to wish you good luck in the second half. As a third generation Cal grad, I’ve spent my whole life hating USC. But getting to know some of you cool CC guys — and those clowns at BN — has shifted the foundation of my football fan hatreds. Please kick their baby blue butts all the way back to Westwood in the second half!

I’d call for takeout.

But I don’t know that I’d call short yardage running plays on 1st and 35.

It’s quite possible they’re calling the best that they can draw up / execute. I prefer to hope that it’s the result of someone being hopped up on goofballs.

by DC Trojan on Nov 28, 2009 9:40 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

They called a screen on 1st and 35

They had it set up nicely and the back looks like he didn’t get far enough outside to get the ball. That’s a complete execution error.

2nd down was a boot that was well covered.

I would have called something similar on 3rd down. Nothing good is going to happen while Barkley’s back there holding the ball waiting for guys to get open.

by DoubleB on Nov 28, 2009 9:42 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I’ll be honest, I’m not sorry they took the time out here. I am not confident about them getting the 3 yards here.

There's an old rule

in coaching. We’ll run out the clock if you don’t extend the game. Well Rick waited until the end to use his timeouts. This is 100% on him.

by DoubleB on Nov 28, 2009 10:31 PM PST reply actions   1 recs

Is that how we defend this move? WE pulled a Harbaugh.

Rick could have used his timeouts at any point in the last 6 minutes to extend the game.

He called one as an FU to USC and USC returned the favor. I’m telling you it’s 100% on Neuheisel.

but then does the same thing to someone else.

What a hypocrite of the highest order.

obviously you didnt see him whining to harbaugh after stanford pasted him.

Well I suppose my deal is that I know the difference between.......

Crying and Whining. I also know the difference between hypocrisy and comeuppance.

Don’t call a BS timeout, play defense, no touchdown period.

by DC Trojan on Nov 28, 2009 10:38 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed with the other comments here

Pete never cried about what Harbaugh did.

That said, Pete wrote himself a hell of a check with that move, and he’d better hope his ass can continue to cash it for as long as he’s coaching at SC. Harbaugh did the same thing with his move. Next year is going to be very, very interesting.
