A macabre prank could be convincing the ND administration that hiring him

would provide Notre Dame a decided schematic advantage on the field.

I’’m pretty sure he didn’t start a waterballoon fight though. That would be grounds for an investigation for sure.

I think they're upset

One of the commentors did make the point that the era of holding (allegedly) higher standards and succeeding passed with the 1960s, and implied that Lou Holtz brought in dummies in order to win. I think that’s fair – maybe the issue is, to return to something from yesterday, that they need to be thinking of Stanford or Northwestern as peers rather than the traditional college football powerhouses.

Beats me.

People said much the same thing about USC before Carroll

Not really because of academics, but it was commonly said that private schools couldn’t compete, and that USC was just another pac10 team. ND is a private school, if they really do have a problem with standards they can fix it. The key is getting a coach who is not so caught up in the Domer BS that he actually gets things done. Holtz did. Holtz is a wonderful old fraud who would gleefully do card tricks for the alums and get whomever he chose in. Weis is a true believer, to him the nonsense means something. If ND ever got a real coach like Urban Meyer (no chance) it would awaken a sleeping giant. Maybe they will get lucky like we did with Carroll and stumble upon a winner, but I doubt it. Their next coach will be an NFL retread, the Domer version of Bill Callahan.

I think the Irish

should hire a coach that knows anything at all about football defense. Then they may have a shot.

ROFL

After a stressful day, this put an immediate smile on my face. One overlooked fact about SC’s rebuilding year this season is how beautifully our rivals fU¢LA and ND have come through to give us indirect pleasure. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching those two trainwrecks perform this year.

Can't put UCLA and ND in the same category

Weis has been screwing things up for years with one of the best programs in the nation. Nueheisel literally started from scratch last year.

I really, really wouldn’t count out UCLA under Rick just yet.

they both suck they both always make excuses. fucla has had good rec classes the last couple of years and they are still at the bottom of the PAC 10

Well

He’s already butting heads with Chow. It took Chow 4 years to get annoyed with Pete. It took only 2 seasons in Westwood.

Chow is notoriously cantakerous.

The head butting is nothing new with the guy. We’ll deal with it just fine…and if not, his contract is up next year. Doesn’t matter to me at least.

I know Chow

from when he was at USC. Its a big deal that he is going public with his disagreements. I’ll just leave it at that.

The worst part for Neuheisel is that it appears that Chow was right. Prince is the best option for ucla at the moment. Doinking with the QBs at this stage is messing with the rhythm of the offense, and its pissing off Norm. I don’t see Norm staying after his contract is up, but stranger things have happened.

Couple of things.

1. Don’t “leave it at that.” I would like to know your thoughts on this. I dig your insight frak.

2. Neu was wrong with Brehaut, but I really don’t see that as a big deal either. Lots of growing pains in our program. I don’t expect things to run smoothly until 2011.

Interesting

As far as “leaving it at that” its hard for me to divulge some of the stuff that I am privy to without airing some personal dirty laundry that revolved around Norm at USC. However I will say that Norm is a quiet guy. He would not be saying contradictory things about his head coaches plans to the press if he were not at the very least highly annoyed.

I do have a question for you though. Why does Neuheisel get a 3 year pass in rebuilding. I think RN is a better coach than Dorrell was, but it seems to me like 2010 should be the “show me what you got” season for the Rick Neuheisel’s bruins.

I’d agree with you on this one. 2010 should be a good year. If not, the seat warmers will be activated.

And yes, it appears Chow was right, and we’ll see if RN adjusts accordingly. If so, all might be well. We’re starting to see signs of potential “clicking” in the offense. We had a tough 5 game stretch. I’d like to see how we come out the rest of the season. If we continue to improve, the battle for LA might be a good game.

Incidentally, the one thing I’ve observed about Chow since joining UCLA’s staff is that he seems to have become less quiet. I think you guys even noted that Chow is taking more of an active interest in recruiting, which is new. Don’t know what to make of these two points together though.

Go Bruins!

I guess the real question is

Will the head butting with Neuheisel overtake Chow’s desire to stick it to Pete. I think Chow has something to prove to his former employer across town.

Yes the ucla offense is starting to click, however someone needs to teach Prince how to slide. ucla cannot afford to have him knocked out of a game going for 1 or 2 extra yards. He is already nursing a jaw injury, and now he has a concussion.

The battle for Los Angeles could be interesting right now. Washington and Oregon showed that USC is totally beatable. The cloak of invincibility is gone from USC this season.

ucla has its problems on both sides of the ball, but I expect at the very least 8 wins next season for them. If they go 7-5 or 6-6, Neuheisel is a failure in my book.

Why I think 4 Years

4 years = all your players and some of your freshmen are seniors at this point. If there has been little development of players between their frosh and senior year even though everyone on the team has been in your system to some degree (save for freshmen), then you do not deserve a 5th.

So, for me, it’s just a matter of what can you do with a team that is quite literally completely yours.

Dorrell had some good recruiting classes

Did he leave the cupboard totally bare?

Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion of course, but I’m still of the mind that Neuheisel has to make significant improvement next season or he’s a bust.

Actually I wish he would win a few of these games…that way they would keep him around for a few more years..guaranteeing losing seasons for awhile…now they will be forced to go drop untold millions on a real coach.
