One Portlander's Perspective

Bumped...Full disclosure, I asked Pete to write this up. Pete and I went through Grade school, Intermediate school and part of High School at PV High before I moved to Torrance. We lost touch after I moved and thanks to FaceBook we got back in touch and I found out he is a rabid college football fan. This is a great take and I appreciate his willingness to offer up his perspective. Thanks Pete!!!

Let me start off by saying that I’m a rabid Duck fan.   But don’t write off my post just yet!  I think you’ll find that I have a fairly unique perspective on Saturday’s game.

Although I live in Portland and graduated from the U of O, I grew up in Southern California and grew up rooting for USC.  In fact, I still root for USC – when they’re not playing the Ducks. My family had USC season tickets throughout the 70’s and early 80’s.  I was there in ’74 and ’75 when SC beat Ohio State at the Rose Bowl.  I was there in 2005 to cheer on the Trojans against Texas, and flew down to LA last year to watch SC beat Ohio State at the Coliseum.

Those were some great Trojan teams.  But I think we all have to admit that the jury is still out on this year’s team.  And I emphasize the word team with good reason.

Of course, SC’s talent level is incredible.  There’s no question in my mind that they have the best players in the country.  I think Matt Barkley may be the best QB prospect the Pac-10 has produced in years, and Taylor Mays is scary good on the other side of the ball.  But it doesn’t seem like the Trojans have come together yet as a cohesive unit.  There have been times when they really seemed focused – like the Cal game (I was there, too).  A “complete game”, though, seems to be rare for this year’s Trojan’s squad.

That said, it wouldn’t surprise me a bit if SC put it all together against the Ducks.  Let’s face it, we’ve all seen this show before: disappointing first half of the season, followed by Pete Carroll stepping on the gas in November.

At the same time, though, I need to point out a few things about this year’s Duck team.  This is not the most talented team Oregon has produced – far from it.  Yet, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Duck team come together like this.  It’s as if the Boise State debacle somehow tempered the steel.  Perhaps the only comparison as far as teamwork is concerned is the ’94 team, and the Gang Green defense.  But these guys are playing with a level of cohesiveness that may surpass that team.

Granted, they haven’t played a team like USC yet.  And the season is not over - not even close.  USC has the ability to beat any team, any time.  Don’t be surprised, however, if the Ducks frustrate the Trojans this year.  We all know that Autzen is a tough place to play, but it promises to be off-the-charts loud on Halloween night.  I don’t care how good Barkley is – it will be tough for a true freshman in that environment.  This game could very well come down to Barkley’s ability to overcome the noise, and play mistake free football against Oregon’s banged-up secondary.

Bottom line : it promises to be an awesome matchup.

A couple of other thoughts/notes:

-There’s a lot of talk here in Oregon about a “black out” for fans going to the game.  There is an unofficial effort to get all the fans to wear black attire in the stands.  There’s also a strong rumor that the Oregon players will wear all-black.  (I’m ready for the avalanche of responses regarding Oregon’s uniforms – have at it!)

-I’m curious to see how USC’s offensive live plays against Oregon’s defensive line.  I’m not sure the Ducks will be able to handle it.  We do have a much better linebacker corp this year.  It will be interesting to see if they can fill the gaps.

-Keep your eye on LaMichael James.  If USC is able to stuff him at the line, Oregon will have trouble.  On the flip side, he could provide a Jaquizz Rodgers type of  weapon for the Ducks against the bigger, stronger Trojans.

-Is anyone else completely frustrated by the 5pm start time?  Fans with kids are making some really tough choices this weekend.  I wouldn’t be surprised if a few marriages are threatened!

-Oregon may be making an announcement on Sunday regarding the future of LaGarette Blount.  I work in the media, and was on the field for the Boise State game.  In fact, I was the last person to talk to LaGarrette before he went back into the locker room.  I have to tell you – I didn’t see the “violent punk” image in his eyes that night.  He just seemed like a kid who let his emotions get the best of him, and made a terrible, terrible mistake.   He just didn’t seem like thug that he was made out to be.  Of course, this is just one guy's opinion - so please take it for what it is, I guess.

Thanks Pete

For the insightful, fair, and balanced perspective. I think many of us haven’t spent much time watching the Ducks this season. I watched the Boise game, and it sounds like that game has very little correlation to the Ducks current level of play. Similar to our game against UW. I tried to watch the Ducks a bit against Cal and UCLA, but could not stand much of the blowout and borefest, respectively.

I guess I am most interested in Masoli? Is he 100% healthy? And, how does Masoli compare to Dennis Dixon? That was the last Ducks squad, perhaps the only one in recent memory, that I honestly felt were a better team than the Trojans. Is Masoli on a similar level to Dixon when he was healthy? Dennis Dixon took a fast, athletic, small and scrappy Ducks squad to another level. A national championship worthy level. Does Masoli compare favorably?

I’d say Dixon and Masoli are two very different QBs.

Dixon was a much better passer. He had better touch, and stepped into his throws. His mechanics were pretty solid his senior year. And in regards to the running game, and he played on a whole different level when it came down to eluding defenses, both when his own physical ability and his ability to fake out a defense with his ball control.

Masoli has a very quick release, but his vision down field, and accuracy aren’t nearly the same level as Dixon’s. However, his running ability is better than Dixon’s was. While not as fast, Masoli can break out of tackles, and he makes better reads on the options. He’s a much stronger runner.

Masoli vs. Dixon

Obviously, two different body types- two different styles. Both very effective at operating Oregon’s spread attack – but it’s not clear if Masoli will ever become as consistent as Dixon was. When Masoli is on, the Duck offense really does appear unstopable – almost like Dixon is at the helm. But when he loses his passing touch – things can grind to a halt in a hurry against a top team- like SC. He’s very, very streaky.

Masoli’s knee appeared to be very solid in his first outing back against Washington. His injury appears to be fairly minor – and MCL sprain, not an ACL tear (he refused to disclose too many details, leaving all of us to guess) He’s wearing a special brace, but it didn’t seem to slow him down.

The Boise State game had a lot to do with Oregon’s offensive line play. Boise State outcoached the Ducks staff, and ran schemes they never had before. Granted, the Ducks offensive line has staged an incredible transformation since then, but hasn’t faced anything like SC.

It will be interesting to see if the Ducks can get any type of push against the SC D-line.

quick clarification...

it’s still unclear if Masoli will ever become as consistent as Dixon was in his SENIOR season. Dixon didn’t really put it together until then, and Duck fans had the sense that he could bring that type of performance every week. We’re not there yet with Masoli, although we’ve seen some games with the offense running at a similar clip – which has created a cautious excitement, if you will….

Wow!

Just. Wow! That was one of the more sentient/salient (not sure which, take your pick) guest write-ups/posts that ANY visiting guest has written here on CC. And before our teams play each other? With so much on the line? Dang! Way to go Pete, seriously. Thanks a bunch. (now you’re a Duck I can see hangin’ out with!)

I just commented on the “Do you trust Chip Kelly” that Paragon put up earlier. Honestly, I “just” read your post right now (9:04 PM Thurs) and. . . .well- if you read what I wrote, you’ll notice we are of the same mind and perspective regarding our respective teams current state of play and their chances of winning this Saturday. (but, are you as insanely good-looking like me too? that’s ok. no one really is) Totally, Just. Kidding. (on the “it’s ok” part)

Regarding Blount: I’m also a member of SB Nation’s “Dawg Pound” and after the Boise State game I remarked on a thread over there that I didn’t think Blount was totally at fault and that his punch was categorically NOT a sucker punch. The reaction was swift and harsh. It’s not worth writing any more about what was said by their regulars to me but, put it this way- I was once a welcome guest and quite chummy with a number of their regulars (including the site manager) however, since those words of mine. . . . .I’ve been “warned” by the site manager (for what? I’m still perplexed by it all- and he “warned” me on a separate and totally unrelated thread) and the “usuals” over there rarely get chummy with me anymore. It is what it is, I still like their site and agree more often than not with what gets said and commented over there. They’re good eggs, however they might be a bit provincial- that’s just my take.

So, it’s a bummer what happened that fateful night regarding Blount and Oregon’s loss. I’m not entirely sure how fair his punishment is and was. I’m not condoning his actions/reactions, nor am I saying he’s innocent of malice or intent. I will also not try to justify what he did- he did it, I didn’t. It’s my contention that he made a terrible and regretful mistake. It’s also my contention that he was punished much too severely for this mistake and that the system failed him due, for the most part, to the media exploitation and public backlash/reaction of the situation. I don’t know young Mr. Blount whatsoever, but I’d like to think he regrets he did what he did and is very remorseful about it all. Every man deserves his chance at redemption, I’m not so sure Mr. Blount will get that chance this year. And for a young man in this day and age, sometimes- when life finally offers him up his next opportunity to redeem himself. . . . .it’s already too late for that person. Their anger and confusion over how they might feel they’ve been treated will/might lead them to make a series of even more bad decisions and choices that have an even greater impact on their future and ability to succeed in whatever it is they hope to achieve in life. I’ve seen it happen firsthand, to a number of old friends/athletes I"ve had the pleasure to play with and against in my life. (i hope anyone reading this understands: i’m not saying it’s a “black” thing or a whatever thing. it’s a young person thing and an athlete thing)
