Oregon Coach Chip Kelly thinks the crowd will rattle Matt Barkley...Not Likely!
They tried it in Columbus.
They Tried it in Berkley.
And they tired it in South Bend...
But try as they might they did not rattle Matt Barkley.
Barkley is not worried about playing in Autzen either...
Of course, a zealous crowd at Autzen Stadium is expected to do everything it can to unnerve the freshman. But Barkley is looking forward to another challenge after leading the Trojans to victories at Ohio State, Notre Dame and California.
"The energy is going to be awesome and it's going to be a cool atmosphere, especially on Halloween night," Barkley said. "Who knows what their uniforms will be?
"Probably something crazy as usual."[...]
Coach Pete Carroll reiterated that Barkley has not been fazed by tough environments -- "Never. Not for a second" -- and he expects that he will play well against an Oregon defense that ranks third in the Pacific 10 Conference.
Barkley, who has seven touchdown passes and five interceptions, is not worried about the Ducks' defense or the crowd.
"I feed off that energy, I feed off that noise," he said. "I love it."
I sure do love his confidence.
Chip Kelly invites Oregon fans to try and do the same thing in response to BArkley's comments about playing in Autzen.
I am quite sure they will be able to come up with something...They always do!

I don’t think Barkley will be fazed, but the noise will definitely limit the USC offense, especially after his comments have psyched up the crowd. The crowd at Autzen won’t be taking plays off, something that can’t be said about many stadiums, who only get up for big 3rd downs.

In 2005
I went to Autzen for the USC Oregon game. The crowd left at half time with Oregon in the lead. They all went to the beer garden, and didn’t return until about the beginning of the 4th quarter. When the crowd got back, USC was leading.
I hope the beer garden is open again on Saturday.

Ugh… That’s the single worst thing about Autzen… I really want them to not allow reentry.

I was shocked
That such a small portion of the crowd between the 20s returned for the half. USC was down 17-10 I think at the half, and when the 4th quarter started USC was leading by 17 I think.
The crowd blew it then, and I expect the lure of frosty beer might blow it again for the Ducks in the crowd noise department.

It has happened every home game so far… I don’t expect it to be different this year.
They even have a recording of chip kelly asking everyone to return to their seats. I think instead of doing that – they just need to not allow reentry after kickoff.
I’m of the opinion that if you can’t return to your seat by kickoff, give your ticket(s) to someone that will. They are just bad fans in my book.

Chip Kelly has all the personality of a....
piece of cardboard. But, Jeremy Bates isn’t the life of the party either. Speaking of colorful coaches, there is none better, or more under-appreciated, than Mike Leach at Tx Tech:

I have a buddy up in Portland
He’s a smart family guy, conservative, successful, cool. I forgive that he’s a Bruin (Anderson) and he’s tolerant of me.
My friend hates USC football with a passion, and always roots against us. However, living among the ferns for more than a decade has given him perspective. He has learned that there is no fan base that is more angry, small-minded, psychotic, drunken, dope-infused, ignorant, foul-mouthed, inbred and flat out obnoxious than the Ducks. My friend will never admit this to another Bruin, but on Saturday, under his breath, he’ll be saying… Go Trojans. Other Bruins will quietly join him.

It can get pretty bad up at Cal
I was pretty lucky at Memorial two years ago, but I read what happened to you and your parents and sounded pretty awful. Cal has even more Raider Nation fans than we do, so that may have something to do with it.
I had a really bad experience with some out of control Bruins as we were leaving the 13-9 game (clearly they were students), so what’s their excuse?

Cal students are the problem
Its not the violence. There is no violence. Its just a bunch of pale hippies yelling obscenities at you. Some 110 pound, no tan dip popping off.

Was in Autzen
for the 2007 game and the Duck fans were mean spirited. Obscenities galore my way during and after the game. Had a cup with Coke thrown at me by some coward up above and behind me in the stands. A lot of very angry people, especially considering they won the game. They seemed mad at me personally for wearing Cardinal and Gold. I turned around to shake hands and congratulate the two Ducks behind me and they looked at me like I was crazy.
I had tix for this year but sold them – Halloween, got to trick or treat with the kids. See you in 2011 Duck Fans. By then you’ll be road kill on our drive to the Crystal Football.

I’m willing to bet most fan bases, including those against USC, have similar stories.
Good luck, Saturday!

Want another one?
After the 2005 game I was leaving Autzen. On my way back to my car, my dad and I noticed a couple of elderly Duck fans trying to help an extremely elderly friend of theirs back to his car. The old fellow had trouble walking and his friends who were also up there in age and were struggling to help their wobbly friend. I offered to help them steady their friend and help them to back to their vehicle. On the way to their car, a group of 10 or so Oregon students saw me and started throwing out all sorts of profanity. You name it, they said it. The no so old fellow who I relieved holding up the extremely elderly guy turned beet red. He was very embarrassed by the behavior of the younger Duck fans, and apologized for them. I told him that they weren’t his fault, and he said that they kind of were because he was the University of Oregon Chancelor.
I said “I guess you are right. Maybe you should do something about it.” By the looks of how the Ducks treated Kevin Love’s dad, I would say that they haven’t gotten the message.
Jshufelt, I’m sure that you are a very nice guy, and these people don’t represent who you are, but I had no less then 50 young Duck fans swear in my face, and my Dad’s face when we went there in 2005.

That sounds pretty awful. And I’m not entirely surprised. I have a few stories of other venues that are fairly comparable myself. About the only one that wasn’t too bad was the folks at Purdue.
Most fans that came around the Harrington era are – in all honesty, generally bad Oregon fans.
There are a few times when I’ve been embarrassed by Duck fans. The Kevin Love thing situation is one of the worst. Ernie Kent even talked to the Pit Crew before the very first game last year.
With all that being said, I’ve witness a couple bad apples, but I’ve personally never have witnessed anything like the horror stories I’ve read. Then again, I’ve never been a visitor into Autzen. I have thought about doing social experiments though.
If you ever do come back to Autzen, feel free to get in contact with me. The group of guys I’m with will make sure you’re treated well (Outside of light hearted ribbing).

This rings true for Oregon and Oregon State fans...
…but I’d say there are more “new” Oregon fans that fall under this category. I was embarrassed at the Cal game last year. There were loud mouth Cal fans in front of us (even worse, they seemed like casual fans who just wanted to start something) that were pretty much followed out into the parking lot, getting showered with profanity and whatever items people could throw.
I will say that the 2007 OSU game at USC was terrible. I watched a group of SC fans walk INTO the OSU section and start two separate fights that required police intervention. I’m not saying these were actual students or anything like that, but just to illustrate that every fan base has its breed of turd. Some are violent, some are mouthy, most of them post in the comments section over at ESPN and all of the are douche bags.
These are the pick a fight with you, boo their own QB fans that real fans don’t want around in the first place.
And Shufelt will undoubtedly take care of you. He will forget the beer, however.

I actually forgot the beer today. I had no plans to head home, but just straight to Eugene after work. I’m just gonna stop somewhere else on my way down. I’ll have the beer for the next game ready too.

and no Oregon State fans were rude to me. Not a single OSU fan was anything but pleasant.

We have some bad fans as well
The bandwagoneers that have shown up over the last decade don’t really represent us well.

East side West side all around the field It is so dangerous, USC might as well not show up.
But here is what USC should do tell the crowd that there is a mary jane smoke out going on at the garden and they will all leave then lock them out HAH
We don't need another Hero we got BN
