Lee Corso is dead-on
Three comments stood out … “They were not ready to play last night.” “There was no emotion at all …” “They lost that game in preparation (meaning lack of)”
Ummmmm, correct. Correct. Correct. This is what I’ve been ranting about over and over. They weren’t ready to play last night. Because had they been ready to play, they would’ve blown OSU out. They’re that much better athletically.
There was no emotion at all. Because the coaching staff did not reinforce the idea that if the Trojans did not come out fired up and ready to play, they might lose the ballgame. It was glaringly obvious in the first quarter that USC had let down. No pride whatsoever. There wasn’t one guy who looked like he was playing with intensity or desire. It was as if I was watching a walk-through. Only, the Beavers didn’t look at it like practice — they knew it was a game.
They lost that game because of (a lack of) preparation. No doubt. They didn’t lose that game because the OSU athletes were stronger, faster, or quicker. They didn’t lose that game because USC was playing in Oregon. They lost that game because they were not prepared mentally to play a football game against a team that showed up hungry. They lost that game because they took it for granted — they simply thought they could walk on the field and win because they showed up. Pitiful. Just an embarassing job at every level.
I needed a team so I wouldn’t turn into one of the eighty million pink hat-wearing Bud Light-drinking mulleted idiots at Fenway.

Corso is right about everything except this
“I think Pete Carroll is the best coach in college football.”
Pete Carroll couldn’t hold the clipboard of the likes of Nick Saban or Rocky Mendenhall. He is a great recruiter and wins with superior talent, not superior coaching. And when he can’t get that talent up for a game, then he’s dead in the water, because he can’t out coach the other guy.
Corso probably said that out of respect for Pete, but he knows its not true. When you say on national radio that you did not have your team prepared to play football, you are not describing the “best coach in college football.”

Saban has also lost inexplicably to inferior opponents. Give Rocky Mendenhall time and he will too -hell, Urban Meyer, the last “Utah saint”, just did the same thing an hour ago.
Carroll was outcoached Thursday night – I’m comfortable saying that. But give me a break with the asinine sweeping statements. I can’t tell you what a joy it has been having such a lousy coach for the last seven years.

The only asinine statement
is you claiming Pete Carroll is a great head coach!
Until he shows me he can get these guys ready to play football against weak and obviously overmatched opponents (the Oregon States and Stanfords) then he remains a great recruiter who can’t coach, period.

Replace Pete Carroll in your statement with Urban Meyer, Bob Stoops, Jim Tressel, Rich Rodriguez, Mack Brown, Nick Saban, Les Miles, Steve Spurrier, Tommy Tuberville, Mike Belotti, Jeff Tedford (I could go on) and you can make the same dumb uninformed statement.
God, I’m sorry and I hate to go off on a fellow fan, but if the unpardonable sin of losing an occasional game is all it takes for you summarily dismiss Pete Carroll’s coaching tenure, than I’m ashamed to share allegiance to the same team as you.

Say listen,
if you like your nose up Pete Carroll’s ass who am I to interfere.
I don’t like him as a head coach, period. I didn’t like it when they hired him either. I will say this, after the Oklahoma game I was ready to change my mind. The team was ready to play, and play they did! I thought maybe Pete just needed a change of scenery. To have a fresh start in the college game seemed the ticket. Then these kinds of losses started to come up, which is what he is famous for. I don’t want any part of the Paul Hacketts’s or Larry Smith’s either, but when the leader of the team doesn’t get the job done, he deserves criticism.
By the way, all those coaches you mentioned? I would say Carroll was better than all of them, except Meyer, Stoops, Rodriguez, Saban, and Miles.
Oh, and one final thing, losing an occasional game is not an unpardonable sin, but losing a game to a team you should wipe the floor with is, ok, got it? Furthermore, my allegiance is to the Trojans, not Pete Carroll, so if you want to cheer for him fine, but leave me out.

Take it easy...
We get it you’re not a fan of Pete Carroll as a head coach. That’s fine you’re entitled to your opinion. He’s not perfect but he is also ours and I don’t think he’s leaving anytime soon. If and when he does leave we will worry about his replacement then.
Everyone’s opinion is welcome here but there is no need to get nasty with someone if you disagree so tone it down, OK?…thanks

Agreed Paragon
but when socalmi whoever he/she is calls my opinion “dumb uninformed” and then claims he’s “ashamed to share allegiance” with someone like me, it gets my dander up, you know what I mean? I don’t have a problem with someone who wants to go toe-to-toe in a civil manner, but the name calling was uncalled for.
Anyway, thanks for a great website for all us Trojan fans. You do a very good job!

No need for the personal attacks OK
All opinions will be honored, it’s fine to disagree but there is no need to debase the conversation with personal attacks. We are all rooting for the same thing even if we disagree about the best way to get there.

Apologies, Paragon and Mr. W. I still contend that being outcoached about once a year does not equate to one being a bad coach – it’s a leap in logic I find too tough to swallow.

Corso is right
When you take into account that recruiting and managing the delicate egos of 19 and 20 year olds is perhaps 50% of being a college football head coach. Do you know what they call college head coaches who are X and O geniuses but who can’t recruit. Fired. (Or Paul Hackett).
No one says that PC is a great game day coach. He’s good, but not great (was better when Chow was the OC and he concentrated on D). For my money, Lou Holtz was the best game day coach I’ve ever seen. Les Miles, believe it or not, ain’t to shabby on game day either.

“was better when Chow was the OC and he concentrated on D”
Exactly my point. Carroll is not a Head Coach, he is a very good Assistant Coach who can be very successful as a Head Coach IF he has quality assistant coaches (like Norm Chow and others) surrounding him.
I see what you’re saying about Corso, but to be the “best” college football coach you have to do a better job of preparing your team, and Pete has failed that task too many times for my taste.

Chow is outdated
chow is still good but growing old he will leave UCLA in a heartbeat that is one reason Pete let him go.
