Oregon's QB Costa out 8-10 weeks
WOW! Another QB down...
Oregon's Nate Costa is lost for a minimum 8-10 weeks (probably the season) with an undetermined knee injury.
UO sophomore quarterback Nate Costa, who was battling for the starting job during fall camp before reinjuring his surgically repaired left knee last Wednesday, will undergo surgery to repair damaged cartilage and likely miss a minimum of 8 to 10 weeks, according to Duck media services.
Costa, who tore ligaments in the knee last Oct. 30, had an MRI following his latest setback but results proved inconclusive in regard to possible ligament damage. The status of his ACL and MCL will be assessed during the upcoming surgery. A date has not been set.
Costa began fall camp atop the depth chart, but had been splitting reps with fellow redshirt sophomore Justin Roper at the time of his injury.
Justin Roper was named the starter and Jeremiah Masoli was named the backup. Its a tough year for Pac-10 QB's, we wish him the best in his recovery.

It’s something like this that can make Cal fans realize how important it is to have both Longshore AND Riley. Much was made of the battle between them, but seeing all the injuries to Pac10 QBs, like Sanchez and Costa and Locker, having a good backup is key.
I think this DEFINITELY affects the Pac10 race.

Damn straight it affects the PAC10
I really didn’t see how Oregon was gonna be able to get through the gauntlet of it’s away schedule this year. And ASU looks like it’s early season sees them lose a few. Which brings Cal, OSU, and Arizona to close the gap on USC. I’ve written this over at your CaliforniaGoldenBlogs Twist, I see Cal, in fact, closing the gap with us this year. What’s weird I find, is that most people outside and inside the PAC 10 don’t fully realize what kind of great Defense both Stanford and Cal are gonna have this year. And as for Cal and excluding Stanford- you guys are gonna have an awesome Offense to boot!
I see Costa’s injury as an open door for Cal and Arizona to shut the door for the rest of the PAC 10 and lay just as much claim for a Rose Bowl berth as we strive to obtain year in and year out. Hopefully, we make it to the BCS Championship in Miami and you guys take out the Big 10 champ in Pasadena!

Don't think Roeper can't play
He played one hell of a game against South Florida in the bowl game last year. And the Ducks actually have Spread QBs backing him up if the worst happens….

I'm still not super impressed with Roper...
I dont’ think he did awesome in the Sun Bowl. He barely threw over 50%, and didn’t squeak off 200 yards. His most impressive stat isn’t the 4 TDs. More often those are stats of circumstance, not skill. The most impressive stat is the 0 INTs.
Still… Roper did make improvement, and he was pushing for the starting job prior to Costa’s injury. That’s good news for the ducks.
Go Duckies!
