Spicer to Start at Nose Tackle

Rancho Cucamonga's Averill Spicer will start at nose tackle for USC next Saturday after getting the nod in a two-man battle with Christian Tupou, who will split the position with him.

"He's never taken a backward step,'' since spring knee surgery, Carroll said. "He's 100 percent.''

"It's worked perfectly,'' Carroll said of the two-man sharing of the spot held the last five seasons by All-Americans Mike Patterson and Sedrick Ellis.
